I agree. I think he will be top 10, but now? Naw. If you look solely at points, since he entered the league, he is 26th. And then consider the top D’s (example Hedman) and top goalies who are more valuable and he is most definitely isn’t close to the top 10-15 NOW.
That's an excellent point. I was thinking that the poll question was just for forwards but if you include defense and goalies he's even further outside the top 10

I mean, the OP mentions “players”, but then talks about forwards. So now I am not sure what he meant. Either way, he is not top 15 overall or only for forwards.

If your building a franchise you take Matthews over anyone in the league. The kid does it all. He's a winner.

Is he a top 10 player right now??? Debatable

Will he be.. 100% yes

It’s literally his question (= first phrase). He talks about “player”.
yeah but I could make a thread saying "Why is McDavid considered the best player of all time?" and it would be meaningless unless I show that people are actually saying that

Matthews isn't a top 10 player yet.
But if you're starting a team he's one of the top five players you'd choose because of his potential and youth.
That doesn't make him a top 10 player at this time and there is no real statistical argument that supports putting him in the top 10 yet.

Do we really need a statistical argument to say Matthews is Top 10?

There is no one in the league with his combination of size, strength on the puck, and shot. He beats goalies like its the 1980s. Just clean ridiculous snipes. To me it's as obvious as the sky is blue.

exactly. hella impressive when you consider that's his rookie season in there. i bet there hasnt been a single player with those stats in rookie season plus first half of next season in a decade. then consider it's EVEN HIS DRAFT PLUS ONE AND TWO.

thanks for pointing that out. I'm glad you see the light.

The “light” sezzzzz he is somewhere in the 20-30s, as a player (fwds, D’s, goalies) and I am being generous. Still incredibly impressive.

Yeah, who needs offense from a Top 6 forward. Funny how you just mention the D-word and it elevates a player up multiple tiers.
his first 3 words are "elite goal scorer" to which you respond "who needs offense"......

another thing is that there's probably more than 10 players who could be considered top 10 players.
McDavid, Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Stamkos, Kucherov, Wheeler, Scheifele, Gaudreau, MacKinnon, Tavares, Doughty, Benn, Marchand, Bergeron, Matthews, Bobrovsky, Hedman, Ovechkin, Getzlaf, Kopitar, and probably more players have all made legitimate claims to being top 10 talents at one point or another. There are too many high end talents to make an objective top 10 list, as you'll probably be neglecting players who deserve to be there

Why can't we simply all enjoy the phenomenal young talent in the league without turning everything into a pissing contest? Who honestly cares where people rank the guy when we all know that the range between the top 10-25 players is so easily argued?

Jeez, you would think that if these people are so happy with their respective players they wouldn't have to justify it by knocking down their "inferior" rival players constantly.

Light blinded you. Look at post #100 in this thread, when you can see again.
i would be shocked if you get more than a handful of leaf haters to say theyd rather have marchand than matthews. 90% say Matthews minimum. and 100% of GMs dump marchand in a heartbeat.

keep up the good fight. it's cute.

If it's as obvious as the sky is blue then it should be able to be proven statistically.
Long story short, he is not yet a top 10 player.
