He's on pace for right around 50 goals and 90 points but your right never again.

I mean ovechkin put up 50 goals and 109 points when he missed 10 games but Matthews misses 8 games and he may be lucky to hit 80?

7 goals in his first 2 games and right back to the ovechkin we know from the past 7 years. he definitely won't score 50. 40ish.

you're talking about stuff from a decade ago. ovechkin is a has been compares to his former self. I mean he's good and all but not in the top tier of NHL players anymore.

He's not top 5, but he's definitely better than a lot of the people you put on that list and top 10 is very debatable. Top 15 is unquestionable.

Lol at the start of the year when he was tearing up the league all these oilers fans blood boiled, that he was even mentioned with McDavid, by many hockey analysts mind you.

Now Matthews is out for 10 games, and obviously his point and goal totals drop as a result, and he’s some scrub all of a sudden.

He never said that but its funny how he gets ahead of guys like Benn who have already won the Art Ross. The difference is that McDavid has already been that guy that led the league in points. These are all guys that have been consistently near the top of the league in points for years.

Yeah and a rookie second in goals in the NHL is just average and should not be hyped. He’s just your average centre. It’s not like he had the best rookie centre season since Crosby or anything big like that

Why is Auston Matthews considered a top-ten, even top-five player already? Obviously he had an incredible rookie season, but having him rated above guys like Stamkos, Schiefele, etc is unjustified imo. I will name all the forwards I think are better than him.

(In no order)

McDavid C
Stamkos C
Kucherov W
Crosby C
Malkin C
Ovechkin W
Tarasenko W
Tavares C
Benn W
Backstrom C
Kane W
Gaudreau W
Schiefele C

Just of the top of my head. In the future Matthews could pass most of these guys, but why is he already considered so great? Toronto Bias?
yes

He's a a franchise player.
He wears a Leaf's jersey, which the #1 fan base on HF is TML.

To put things into perspective Mikale Granlund scored 69 points last season, albeit he didn't score 40 goals. Most wouldn't considers him a 1c where they do Matthew's, its about more than points. Matthews learned a more complete game playing over seas than a extra year in NA which is proving valuable.
Matthews scored at a .84 PPG which is GREAT for a rookie, and bodes well for his future. How many rookies score 40 goals?

Im no Toronto fan, but ignoring Matthews abilities isn't wise.

I can name 10 better centers as of today.
Crosby
Malkin
Stamkos
McDavid
Toews
Kopitar
Tavares
Backstrom
Schiefele
MacKinnon
Giroux
Schenn - due to his flourishing year in STL as a 1C

Matthews is still a PPG player in a year where he has been struggling with injuries, and had a long stretch where he was not anywhere near healthy and it showed in his play. He is a top defensive player in the NHL, and has a frame and physical toolset most of those players could only dream of.

I really have to question if the Leafs are truly over rated or not by Leaf fans. Most thought over the summer a division spot, making the playoffs, and PPG from the kids would be a good year. Leafs are on pace for a division spot, one of their kids are PPG, and the others are heating up and at the very least look to be on pace to break last years totals.

Despite this, many fans on here believe they are somehow failing to meet expectations. As if they are the pens, or Oilers. Matthews is a PPG dominant two way 20 year old C, and threads like this call him out for not being good enough. It's embarrassing.

Also ever notice these threads are ALWAYS started after a bad game by the Leafs?

Let's also ignore that those guys ALL play more minutes than Matthews and ALL get way more PP time than him. Babs doesn't overplay anyone. Matthews also gets a much heavier defensive usage too. He starts more in his own zone.

Kucherov is on another planet this year. Scoring is all over the place . Josh Bailey has more points than everyone else in the league but Kucherov.

I know people are trying to push their anti-Leaf agendas, and yes Matthews isn't a top 5 player but he is definitely with the group of guys around top 10. He does so much more than every other Leaf player every game that he is over sensationalized by fans, yes. Watching him in a game though you can see it with an unbiased view that he controls every shift he plays

Josh Bailey has more points than Crosby,Stamkos, Tavares............... Mcdavid. Halfway thru the season none the less. Too many hot takes on every player. Interesting year that is much better to witness without petty grudges

HFBoards = If One or small group of hyper fans with polarizing and/or stupid opinions says something, every other fanbase immediately attaches those statements to the entire fanbase and holds it as gospel and commences bashing

This is what makes the main boards so hard to be civil on. It seems everyone has an agenda and regardless of what takes place on the ice, people only look for evidence for their opinions and ignore everything else. This means Leaf fans see all of the good of Matthews (to be fair, I don't really think there is any bad I can think of.. maybe he can hit more?) and the haters see all the bad.

It happened last year with Laine and Matthews too. Two kids, both have unheard of rookie years, and reading the main boards you'd think the pair of them were busts lol. I want to love McDavid, but the unconditional love he gets is a bit much at times as any criticism is met with snarky "LOL McDavid >>> Matthews" replies despite him not even being mentioned.

It's just becoming one big reality tv show. Everyone has grudges, there is drama. I'll be honest I was off of here for a while, and it was nice not reading the main boards. I just wish I could hear about other teams without coming to the mains.

Here's an idea.

Try to turn off your Leaf hate for one game.
Then watch him play for a game and see how he plays and what he does every shift.
Then look at the list that the OP made and ask yourself how many of those guys can do what Matthews does.

I'm not saying he's better than all of them but I can say, with confidence, that he does some things as well as (often better than) a lot of them.
Then ask yourself which player you'd rather have on the team you love...player from the list or AM.

Again, not all of them but more than the OP suggested.

all things considered, contract and age, there are only 2 or 3.

You have to watch our games on a regular basis to see what he does in all areas on the ice. He's not just a goal scorer.

Its hilarious you have Wheeler, Bacsktrom, Tarasenko etc. But not Marchand/Bergeron.
