So how does forcing your first overall pick out the door benefit the team?
The same way Larsson left NJ after his ELC ended?

there hasn't been a single #1 that didn't receive their full bonuses in their ELC...now Lou is going to alienate a player by doing this?
I don't see it at all

There wasn't a single #4 who didn't have it either, until Larsson didn't get one, and then Marner. Larsson had no problem re-signing with the team. By the time the player is a UFA, he won't care that he got screwed out of bonuses his first 3 years. Stamkos was screwed (monetarily) on every single contract, and he still re-signed in TB for less (than other teams were offering) on his UFA contract.

Two different guys - two different situations.

Two different times.

Give me an example of a player who did it. I'm not sure how you're so confident Matthews will be the first player in history to leave because of ELC bonuses.

I don't disagree but if a player like Matthews doesn't want to play for a certain team there are options if he isn't afraid to park his butt in Europe (London just joined the KHL for example) for 3 years.

I believe teams hold the rights to European drafted players for 4 years now.

Would be quite the wait.

Lou is a dinosaur. As well as the performance bonus nonsense, he's probably insisting Matthews shave his sideburns.

sigh for the record again, lou did up marners contract last year and he gave him his bonuses. Its already been stated that lou has changed his policy on bonuses therefore the only reason matthews doesn't sign is because he chooses not to and thats very unlikely to happen.

Larsson or Marner aren't considered the faces of their franchises though...huge difference
Lou driving a hard bargain and cheapening out on bonuses that he may not even reach for the supposed franchise player isn't a good way to kick off a relationship

Just curious how come he hasn't signed yet? Seems like all 1st overall sign within a week.

Has he been presented a contract to sign?

The same way Larsson left NJ after his ELC ended?

What were the contracts he turned down?

Stamkos was the face of TB, and Yzerman refused to offer him market value on his RFA and UFA deals. Stamkos still re-signed as a UFA, for less money on his present contract. So I don't think players care about it as much as you do.

Man, I hope Lou doesn't cause some unnecessary animosity between the Leafs and Matthews. We saw how that can play out with Yzerman & St. Louis. Shannahan needs to step in ASAP and get this thing taken care of. Every day this goes on, the Toronto media will take it and run and turn it into something bigger than it is. Then every Maple Leaf will have to start answer questions about why Matthews won't sign his contract.

No other market (except for Montreal) can take absolutely nothing and turn it into a career destroying saga like Toronto. Get it done.

It's well documented that Lou said since the team started discussing contract with Marner BEFORE he (Lou) signed with the team that he would honor it.

The other teams who he would sign with could maybe pay quite a worthwhile price for his rights to have him now and not in four years.Hypothetically speaking.

Lou's motto is literally, "If you have time, use it."
Well that and status quo, but you get the point. There's no reason to jump to conclusions over something that is almost certainly a non-issue.

how exactly?
Well, in 2011 the only way the Devils could fit Larsson's cap hit under the salary cap was to keep it under $1 million. Larsson wouldn't have made the team if he cost any more than he did.

Obviously not the case here, but it is always a good thing to keep the cap hit as low as you can.

So how does forcing your first overall pick out the door benefit the team?

So dramatic... Matthews will get whatever deal Lou gives him and he'll get over it. If he's worth the bonuses, then he'll get his money in due time. And even if Lou is being a stickler over the bonuses, it's never too early to tell a kid they have to earn it. Lou built his career by making it clear to his players that they were never more important than the team.

Although, Lou refused to give Marner Schedule B bonuses (potentially $2M).

In fact, Lou has never given a single player “Schedule B” bonuses.

Schedule Bonuses were introduced after the lockout.

Since then the only players drafted Top 4 that did NOT receive the full bonus schedule are Larsson + Marner.

(both contracts negotiated by Lou)
