Speculation: Why Has Trouba Not Signed Yet?

Jets have an interesting decision. I may be tempted to lock up Trouba instead of bridging him. I would gamble this is a player that is going to have a big year, that it may be worth the investment now in saving dollars now than doing this all over again next summer, for savings in the long term.

How exactly did you get from that post that I was claiming to have insider information? Do I really need to add "I think" when it is fairly obvious it is just an opinion?

You don't have to, no, but expect to be called out for it.

There are enough comparables out there like Rielly, Jones and Ekblad who have already signed.

The real reason why these guys haven't signed is because they quite clearly want out of their respective teams.

Well ****, if guys who have the ability to sign contracts with varying years and dollars aren't signed yet means they want out of town, someone who hasn't signed a strict ELC must REALLY want out of whatever team they might belong to.

Matthews took his pen so he could sign with Toronto. But then realized Lou wouldn't give him bonuses so he threw the pen in a fit of rage. It broke. Now they both don't have pens, and neither will sign until this problem is resolved.

/thread

Explains everything, signing is happening 4-5 days into training camp.

Trouba's on the roster for the World Cup of Hockey this Fall. I think he signs before that. I doubt he'll want to go into that tournament without a contract.

What's the word Trouba's agent is asking for? 6+ mil per?

Senators board is talking about Ceci getting ~20 million over 5 years as decent, any above being overpayment.

5 years is a bad term for a good young defenseman, unless the team is trying to save money in the next few years. Teams should want to lock up their best young players for longer contracts (avoiding bridge deals). Young players want to get to UFA sooner and cash in with big deals at a younger age.

I agree with that.
Winnipeg has demonstrated nothing but competent management. I'm sure the deal will be done.
Same probably goes for Matthews in terms of the other thread.

If he gets a full million more than Rielly over the same term then someone give Trouba's agent a medal.

Rielly's agent got taken to the cleaners by Lou, if you believe all the hype about Rielly's near superstar status. Trouba probably should get a bit less than Jones, unless they go longer term.

...and then Lou stabbed Matthews.

(if you get the reference, I rate you even more)

Gary Lawless was on the TSN 1290 Rona Roundtable radio show yesterday and he thought Trouba hasn't signed yet because he may prefer to play on the right side, but Byfuglien and Myers may be ahead of him on that side. Some of Trouba's stats may not be as good as they could be because he's spent a lot of time playing with Stuart and with 3rd line forwards. Lawless thought that Trouba may want some assurances that these issues could somehow be considered, and that Trouba would also like time on the power play. Here's the link to the radio interview: http://www.tsn.ca/radio/winnipeg-1290/lawless-jacob-trouba-contract-negotiations-1.527442

So Trouba will definitely sign with Winnipeg? It's just a matter of time? Or is he unhappy because of how they have used him? Or is his camp waiting for an offer sheet?

Trouba hasnt signed yet because he thinks he's a lot better than he is. Because he listened to the incredible hype he got on here when he first came into the league and for him it hasnt gone down even though his play obviously has.

Id give him 4.2 mil and call it a day. Its what he's worth anyway.

You are right he is totally making decisions based on what he read on HF.

Does he want to be traded, or are the Jets on an internal budget and can't afford him?

This thread has been brought to you by the same person that once suggested Patrik Laine will have trouble adjusting to NHL-sized rinks and that he will likely start the season in the AHL. LOL

The answer to the question is probably the most obvious one; his agent is waiting until all comparable players have re-signed in case one sets a new high $ point from which to negotiate. Trouba has essentially no leverage, he is not eligible for arbitration, his only ally is time; however, time is soon to erode as well if he wishes to play in the World Cup. Chevy has a long history of doing things at his own pace; they will most likely sign him when both parties are ready to do the deal.

1. So Trouba will definitely sign with Winnipeg? 2. It's just a matter of time? 3. Or is he unhappy because of how they have used him? 4. Or is his camp waiting for an offer sheet?

1. Nothing is 100% sure, but both sides want a long term deal, so I guess he's very willing to stay.

2. Yes. We hold his rights. His only options are offer sheets or holding out, which does not help his case at all.

3. Here's the problem. He has either played on his natural side with Stuart or on his offside with Buff. Both of those scenarios are far from ideal, which obviously hurts his stats. I'm guessing that Trouba would like to play on his offside, but as long as he has to carry Stuart while doing so, it will inevitably hurt his production. So, he probably wants to get paid more than his production would have earned him because of the anvil he has played with for all these years. No one here knows for sure, but that's what I'm thinking at least.

4. Winnipeg is basically offer sheet proof at this point: way over 8 million of cap space and only Trouba left to sign. If he wants out of Winnipeg, waiting for an offer sheet would be a stupid option.

3 x $4.5

makes what contemporaries make, will still be decent money at the end of it, and makes him very appealing for a cash-in contract at 25 years old. There won't be any of that "Well the last three years he'll be way overpaid" crap.

I agree.

This is a tempest in a teapot.

Trouba is not going anywhere. He will re-up with the Jets soon.
