Why do people hate Pierre McGuire?

lmao I remember

- during game 3 of the SC Finals in DC I was just milling around the NBC set they set up outdoors and some drunk guy keeps yelling for Pierre McGuire to come out because "they have an issue to pick with him" (notion from Caps fans that Pierre is biased against Capitals for whatever reason). Also reminded that someone brought a deragotory NBC sign and kept trying to put it on TV "nothing but C" I can't remember what C was...all I remember is they kept trying to put it on air and the camera kept trying to turn away

- during Game 7 of Canes Caps between the benches people kept yelling at Pierre McGuire before warmups and he was waving to them and taking pictures even though he was behind the glass and he couldn't go into the crowd
NBC = Nothing But Crosby

He's cringy and creepy to watch. Also nobody has respect for the guy.

I wanted to make a funny username that was slightly different to his name. For obvious reasons I can't.

He's a typical old school anti analytics dummy that says really stupid things that show he has zero understanding of analytics and hasn't even tried to understand them.

In fairness, no one understands them because they are completely made up and 100% useless. But I can see why people who don't know the sport who cling to this imaginary thing to believe they have an understanding getting upset when they are called out for their ignorance

He's not perfect, but far better than Cassie Campbell, or whomever the quota hire NBC has had on a few games this year

I completely agree with the OP.

He used to annoy the hell out of me with some of his comments, but then his personality grew on me and I find him hilarious and informative. You have to give the guy credit...he knows what people say about him, but he straight up doesn’t care. He maintains his own personality and obvious passion for the game.

A poster on this site once summed him up perfectly: he’s just an obsessed hockey nerd.

His shtick feels like narrating a player’s twitter or Insta feed.

It’s a little too personal, like hearing someone’s creepy breathing AND feeling it on the back of your neck.

Seems like a real know it all..........calls out people who are 10X smarter than him, and makes himself look like an idiot. So if he does this to himself, who are we to disagree.

agreed CC is horrible. I can't stand listening to her. There are a lot of good female broadcasters and she isn't one of them.

lAlso reminded that someone brought a derogatory NBC sign and kept trying to put it on TV "nothing but C" I can't remember what C was...all I remember is they kept trying to put it on air and the camera kept trying to turn away

that's a reason to hate him? I've seen other people do this before.

is he knowledgable ? sure. but nobody goes from zero to creepy faster than mcGuire.
He's also a sycophant when he talks to players, he just tries too hard too often ( like all the time)
but its mostly the creepy thing.

linda cohn for one ( she plays nets, what's not to like) but she will never leave ESPN even if the genuises from disney drive it into the ground.

I'm unabashedly old school ( miss bob cole already), but the next good broadcaster I thought was going to be boucher but my impression is that his progression on the national stage has stalled.

edit: it's cohn not cohen, my bad.

1) I'm a Blues fan and get to listen to Darren Pang all season long. Not fair to compare, but Panger is LIGHT YEARS better than Pierre.

Other less important reasons:

2) The guy is biased to some players and teams. He over-corrected last night (perhaps after being called out) but in game two Blues/Stars, 85% of his commentary was Stars positive and/or Blues negative. I know this sounds like I'm a homer since I've already stated I'm a Blues fan - but I actually rewound and re-listened just to confirm I wasn't only paying attention to the negative.
3) Pierre is supposed to be a hockey nerd? His job is to talk about hockey to all of us and he can't even pronounce our players' names correctly. How into his job is he?
4) The dude was SUPER disliked as a coach from what I read. And, his coaching record is the pits. After reviewing his wiki (which I did on Saturday while trying to figure out why he had a personal bias against the Blues), it sort of looks like he got to where he is just by who he knows.
5) He interrupts.
6) If I have to hear the term "locked in" one more time...

it's not. i just had a random recollection of it.

people don't like him because he sucks up to teams or has perceptible bias. That guy yelled out during game 3 "i have a bone to pick with you" because he as well as caps fans thought that Pierre was biased against Caps or that Pierre had Penguins bias

LOL I REMEMBER NOW

THE SIGN SAID "NEEDS BETTER COMMENTARY" Just goes to show you how much people disliked the commentary NBC was doing through the SC Finals. They didn't like Pierre, they didn't like Edzo, they didn't like Milbury, etc. I honestly think Doc is the best and Edzo is fine but Mike Milbury and Pierre McGuire are optional.

I like it when he asks his “Monster of the Game” how his breath is.

That’s the best part of the night.

Maybe when he does games with Pahneuf, he can mention his daily Double Dion.

The word "creepy" has been used at least 22 times in this thread already. Most of the criticisms of him that I read smack of homophobia... and he's straight!

"Hal Gill is a defenseman with a long stick."

"You're an announcer with a long stick"

That's reason enough for me. Particularly with the way they were situated where he was stood WAY too close for comfort to him because TSN didn't want him blocking their graphic.

I don't think it's a sexual thing...that's a huge stretch. He invades people's personal space and has an alien, off-putting demeanor at times. This is probably the prime example. Obviously he isn't hitting on Byfuglien, he's trying to be funny or something and just comes off like an irritating weirdo.

Anyone who gets as much pleasure as Pierre does whenever he talks about a player having a "long stick", should never be on TV.

Anyone who talks about hockey players under the age of 18, with again, as much "pleasure and enthusiasm" as Pierre does, should be banned from being within 500 feet of a hockey rink. If he had been a school teacher, and talked about his students the way he talks about junior hockey players, he would have been fired long ago.

And for Gods sake... stop f***ing yelling every time you talk. I have no problem hearing a normal toned conversation out of my TV.
