Why do people hate Pierre McGuire?

As with any person, always something to like and dis like. Seems like a nice guy,but too often sounds too corporate. Think the thing that irks me mostly is his saying : told ya so,didn't I tell you?

He's got two shit tons of knowledge for sure, I don't hate his over the top excitement as most even though he can sound WWE-ish. At least he brings genuine energy and he always lets us know the battles going on off the camera, like who's chirping who about what and the shenanigans on the benches.

That said, I hear you all on his creepiness, I remember him praising Matt Cooke and calling him his little cookie monster

I don’t have an issue with him, and it’s on him if he makes a fool out of himself.

The thing that's weird to me, is that so many people who hate Pierre seem to adore Ray Ferraro, who has a similarly obnoxious style imo...but angrier, more negative, and with a lot more stating the obvious. It's like people like Ferraro and think he's "smart" and "insightful" because he harps on what people are already thinking, and they like having him echo it back to them. Whereas Pierre tends to mention things and have opinions or thoughts that don't just go along with the accepted flow.

I mean, Pierre is a weird creep and can be very over the top at times. I wouldn't trust him to coach or build a hockey team or anything. But as a commentator, i find his level of enthusiasm, positivity, and distinctive style a welcome breath of fresh air in a market that is pretty sorely lacking real "personalities" and genuine fun and whimsy these days.

The word "creepy" has been used at least 22 times in this thread already. Most of the criticisms of him that I read smack of homophobia... and he's straight!
You don't have to be gay to be creepy. And as a person perfectly comfortable with my own sexuality, he still creeps me the hell out.

He's just too earnest all the time. It gets old, quick.

I don't think he'd have anything to say about the Blues if Colton Parayko wasn't on the team. Seriously last night it was brutal, the Blues never trailed and I swear he didn't ever talk positively about them. Even Enzo can say something good about the Blues.

He's got favorites and it's folks like him, Milbury, and Jones that just have no idea how to commentate and they need to get bumped for folks like Patrick Sharp, who had a lot more positive things to say about the Blues in the postgame. Which is pretty insane seeing how he's a few years removed from being on both the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars.

I actually think he's not earnest, but, rather, he knowingly forces his analysis into storylines he's decided before the game even starts half the time. I think his love for the game is real, but, otherwise, his sincerity is flimsy.

Pierre's Wikipedia page is a most interesting read IMO. The man has led a most interesting life. I suggest reading it before you comment on the man.

He talks just to hear himself talk and to show how much he "knows" by spouting random facts that having nothing to do with the game.

He could say something useful like, "Look out for Nyquist here, he's been dangerous since they've moved him to the top line, with 5 goals on his last 7 games."

Instead you get, "Seguin's dad was roommates with the great Ray Bourque at Boston College."

I like Pierre. Sure, he can be a little quirky at times, but his passion and knowledge of the game are second to none. It's nice to see someone with that enthusiasm.

Separately, one thing I have noticed recently when doing the interviews is that he has a huge scar on the right side of his head. He didn't have that before. Don't know if he got caught with a stick/puck while between the benches. I'm hoping it isn't something more serious than that.

When you read youtube or twitter comments they are full of genuine hate for Pierre.

The dude is hilarious. There are nonstop videos of him that are just funny... that's not a coincidence. The NHL is devoid of personality and Pierre is full of it.

Like with this goal call, if any other announcer did it it would probably be annoying, but because it's Pierre it's hilarious because it's such a Pierre moment:

That horrible call is exactly what cost him his gig with TSN.

Easy answer is that I look for insight from guys at rink level. They see things that you miss on TV, and that's their value. Pierre doesn't provide that. To be honest, I never see him provide anything other than hype and comedy.

Wouldn't surprise me. It's the first thing that comes to mind every time I think about Pierre's contribution to broadcasting.

I can guarantee that Gord Miller was annoyed listening to Pierre just trample over his spectacular call of that goal.
