Why do people hate Pierre McGuire?

According to wikipedia he was a standout defenseman, pitcher and starting QB for Hobart College, a private liberal arts college in Geneva, New York.

Seems very possible he was the only one there.

Better read up on Hobart a LITTLE more . . . oldest college in upstate NY in it's lineage.

Someone every once in the while always has the genius idea that PM should be hired as a teams GM.

I don't know about that. I feel like contract negotiations with him would go quite weirdly. I'm talking bout we need water at this failed music festival type weird.

Because of stuff like this:

Bruins beat the Leafs:
"Hockey isn't a game about analytics. It's about heart and grit."

Hurricanes beat the Caps:

"Carolina just shot the puck so many times, that's part of their game plan."

So...what you're saying is shot attempts matter? Got it, sparky.

Also, his annoying tendency to "full name" people like calling our GM "PIerre Dorion Jr." when no one calls him that, ever.
Lastly, his inability to formulate an opinion on player contracts, coach hires, GM security because...reasons.

He used to be ultra cringy when he was on TSN. When be moved to NBC, my dislike for him went away.

And being a Sens fan who listens to tsn1200 (local sports radio station), I cant help but feel grateful towards Pierre that he calls in to the station EVERY single morning to give his take on the Sens and the NHL.

For a "big shot" like himself, he certainly does not need to be doing this, and could easily forget where he came from.

He's paid to do this, and his name is Regis. He dropped it as an affectation for media play.
He's originally from New Jersey/MTL and has no ties to either area anymore. He's long, long moved on from his roots.

People should embrace his quirky ways. I much prefer that over someone completely forgettable

He was an assistant coach in Ottawa. That's what I was referring to.

He's a goober. He means well. I don't really care one way or the other.

This isn't because of Pierre, but I wish we could just watch the game without any commentary. I'd like to make up my own mind on what's happening and still hear the sounds of the game.

amen.

When you read youtube or twitter comments they are full of genuine hate for Pierre.

The dude is hilarious. There are nonstop videos of him that are just funny... that's not a coincidence. The NHL is devoid of personality and Pierre is full of it.

Like with this goal call, if any other announcer did it it would probably be annoying, but because it's Pierre it's hilarious because it's such a Pierre moment:

Creepy personality with a huge inferiority complex that causes him to go miles and hours about his knowledge which would be useful and welcome at the right place and in smaller portions, but gets really annoying when he starts about dog names of dogs Player X and Player Y had in juniors.

But hated? No. Just annoying. I mute him a lot.

He's a typical old school anti analytics dummy that says really stupid things that show he has zero understanding of analytics and hasn't even tried to understand them.
Analytics are boring. I wouldn't want to listen to them during a game. I have a hard time looking them up after.

Agreed. I really don't care about where Player X played his mite hockey, but I also don't want to hear Pierre spouting off situational stats like 4v4 CF/60 during the 3rd period at home. If most people heard that during a game, they'd probably look at each other and say "this dude is weird. WTF is he talking about?" Despite the groupthink of the statpushers on here, the majority of viewers probably don't have any idea what Corsi, Fenwick, or the various categories of Danger Scoring Chances.

Overall he doesn't bother me. Is he sometimes weird and maybe a little too enthusiastic? Yeah, probably. But I can't think of the last time where I've been that bothered by something he says. It's Pierre. He is what he is. If he's between the benches between a game, then whatever. If he isn't there, then that's fine too.

As other(s) have mentioned hate is too strong of a word to be used here. I don't hate the guy at all. Sometimes I find him informative, sometimes I block him out and sometimes he is annoying. I'll give him kudos for being passionate about the sport though.

I remember reading on here that he was told to stand closer to Dutch so that the Tradecenter 08 wasn't being blocked.

Right, but he could have just stood shoulder to shoulder so that he didn’t have to swivel to look at the camera. The creepy lizard stare could have been done without as well.

The thing I like about him is that he has a personality.

That's something that the NBA does way better than the NHL, their commentators/TV guys are far more entertaining to listen to than the tumbleweed Sportsnet guys. When Elliot Friedman is the guy trying to make jokes, something has gone terribly wrong.

Everybody has a personality.

he's annoying. and his name isn't even pierre

and anyone who ever even thinks "hey, why isn't this guy ever considered for a GM position?" needs to simply research his time with the whalers to kill off that thought immediately

This isn’t new, he was very disliked when he was coaching in the league, look into the news articles around his time in Hartford. I have no hate for the guy, he’s just very strange.

He doesn't appear very strange to me, just a little quirky in a fun loving way. Probably takes very little to be considered strange within hockey culture. I think it's more that he's a non-typical sports person, or a non-stereotypical sports person.

I'm not talking about him not talking about analytics during a game, I'm talking about some of the stupid things he's said in interviews. He comes off as arrogant and unjustifiably confident in his opinions, much like Craig Button.

he sounds like someone shot his dog in front of him anytime someone scores on the Penguins. ruins the national games PIT plays

He is the odd ball in a conversation that says the most out of left field thing... then everyone stops laughing/talking and just looks his way. Also his voice sounds like he is choking on something.

He is basically a representation of everything wrong with modern media. They want to be your friend, the interviewees friend. Just f*** off and do an interview with professionalism.

and I'm sure the quote didn't help things either.

Could he have stood shoulder to shoulder? Yeah probably. My guess is that he was told to move in and was told not to move once he got to that position.
