Why do people hate Pierre McGuire?

I don't hate him, I just dislike the way he tries to force everything into a story he's already come up with. He knows a lot, sometimes his analysis is good, and I like his enthusiasm; but more often than not, he tries to make some tiny play or some random 3rd liner into the defining story of the game. He'll mention it early and then anytime he has an opportunity, he'll whip out a self-congratulatory, "see, I told ya!" - and he seems to lay it on thicker to compensate whenever those things are clearly not much of a factor. I can't count the number of times he's talked about some player "taking over the game" after just one solid, but unspectacular shift. It contradicts the nuance, chaos, and reality of the game.

I don’t like the way he delivers the questions. He just seems like he knows what the answer is going to be but he wants to see if he can get a reaction from the coach. I find the in game interviews to be totally unnecessary even when it's not Pierre.

I don't get why he's ripped on so much either and I don't even like him that much.

Apparently facts about how a player made it to the NHL, etc. is childish. I kinda find it interesting? Idk.

Instead we want these guys who are robots.

He isn't perfect but the way you guys rip on him like know-it-alls is a bit much.

When you read youtube or twitter comments they are full of genuine hate for Pierre.

The dude is hilarious. There are nonstop videos of him that are just funny... that's not a coincidence. The NHL is devoid of personality and Pierre is full of it.

Like with this goal call, if any other announcer did it it would probably be annoying, but because it's Pierre it's hilarious because it's such a Pierre moment:

who hates him?

he does his job, has his own personality

he used to be a coach so knows a few things or two

seems like a nice guy

whats there to hate?

The main reason i don't want to listen to Pierre is he will make a comment or statement, usually about something seriously lacking significance, early in a game then make a point of repeatedly revisiting the subject in order to validate his earlier viewpoint. It's something generally only seen from children or those completely void of self confidence. Not a good look/sound from somebody tasked with entertaining/enlightening a national t.v audience. Combined with his general social awkwardness he comes off as a bush league media personality desperately crying out for attention.

I don't hate him he's just a lot to take sometimes. That, and his constant need to mention how he knows almost every hockey player's junior history. Oh Pierre. Never change.

I don't disagree that he brings some positives to the table, but live commentary is just one of those fields where being merely adequate is little different from being utterly terrible.

You simply cannot be socially awkward in a speaking role because so much of that requires you to have a strong sense of your audience.

You need to have an instinctual sense of timing - when to press on points and when to dial it down to let the game take over. National television audiences do not want to hear you jawing on and on about small details in the midst of a heated affair on the ice.

Can you provide an example?

Are you annoyed by his criticism after a poor play..

He’s like that buddy that’s way too happy and excited all the time and it gets old after awhile. That’s Pierre McGuire in my opinion.

He's a creepshow. Talking about strong legs and long sticks too much. Another example would be the creepy interception on ice with that women's hockey player and then the sexist comments.

Hate is a bit strong. He's just a weirdo, brings up odd facts that have no relevance, talks over the PBP guy too often going on about what Jake Guentzel's mom made him for dinner on Sundays, and the majority of interviews he gives are just plain hard to watch. His enthusiasm as a huge hockey nerd can be kind of fun but you wish he would dial it down 4 or 5 notches.

Become basically a trained response to think to myself "Shutup Pierre" any time he opens his mouth.

I haven't heard much of him since he made the move south of the border, but I did catch some of his work in the first round this year, and he seems like he's alot more mellowed out.

Not the Pierre I remember.
