Why are Boston Bruins the most hated team throughout the NHL?

This. Bruins are hated/loathed by the leafs and Canucks and respected by other teams in the league for example Montreal. There's a great deal of respect between Montreal and Boston / there is 0 respect between Boston and Toronto.

^I don’t think there’s much respect between Boston and Montreal honestly. That is what we call hate
The respect between Bruins & Habs fans is definitely there, at least among older fans. It's been cemented through decades of playoff series, going back way before the internet turned rivalries into a pissing contest of insults between fans posting on message boards. Back then, nobody talked about fan bases. We never saw each other, so who cared? We just watched the games and players. Back then, Habs fans had plenty of respect for Orr & Esposito, and a little later, Bourque and Neely. Likewise, I'd guess most Bruins fans had a grudging respect for Lafleur, Beliveau, Dryden, up to Carbonneau and Roy. I'm sure they hated Nilan, just like we hated Stan Jonathan and Linesman.

But that was hockey hate, limited to a handful of rat players and 60 minutes of hockey. When we turned off the game, we turned off the hate. Today, when the game ends the hate jumps online for a 24/7 feeding frenzy. That's the main difference -- old rivalries were fought between a dozen players on the ice; modern rivalries are fought between millions of fans with hot takes.

Give me the Montreal/Boston brand of hate that's been generated on the ice, versus the Toronto hate that's mostly a byproduct of nonstop yapping from media and fans. The former is a real hockey rivalry; the latter is the noise of people yelling over each other.

Well. When the Toronto vs Boston series starts follow along with the GDT and then try to tell me the Bruins are the most hated team in the league.

They probably are in the upper tier though. Matchand. A lot of success. Large fanbase. Etc.

I don’t know if they’re the most hated, but the hate they get is from the style they play, and the lack of repercussion they face for it... which is likely due to refs trying to keep the games “even”.

I think the most dirtbaggy franchises in the league, at least historically, have been Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. I'll call Pittsburgh #1 because they'd whine and pretend otherwise, while happily employing some of the dirtiest slimiest jerks in the league. Philadelphia embraced it. To be fair, both franchises have toned it down significantly in the last 3 years. But the dirtbag stink is still there.

We can get into talking about fans, but then there's not thing I could say about other fanbases I can't say about our own. (Well, I mean, I could say things about Toronto, but that's been covered.)

If I had to guess, reputation. When you're hated 8 years ago that's generally hard to shift public perception, or more likely for the bruins, the perception of public perception.

Nobody hated the Bruins 8 years ago, except Canucks and Habs fans. The rest of the hockey world were rooting for the Bruins over (mod) Vancouver.

Pittsburgh is hated just because of their winning culture/success, along with Crosby as well.

Boston's playing style is tough, just take a look of how they responded against Vancouver when Rome hit Horton during the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals? However, Vancouver still had a chance to win the cup, but Thomas played great during that series.

Habs and Leafs are easily the most hated and loved. When you have both been around the longest, this is the natural course.

I see people mentioning teams like the Habs, Leafs, Pens, etc.........I really don’t think there is any universally most hated team......makes no sense to hate some generic team who’s roster literally changes to a greater/lesser degree every year. I could see back in the 70’s some people hating the Flyers who would literally intimidate & bully other teams.......but that doesn’t happen in today’s NHL.

Man, some people are so desperate to be seen as "most hated" that they need to keep repeating it. Its like they are trying to convince themselves more than others

I grew up hating the Bruins, but over the past few years it has dawned on me that I actually like them. I admire their style of play, smarts(though they had a rocky period with the Kessel/Seguin/1st rounder picks/Backes), and players like Bergeron. Even Chara has grown on me, though the Pacioretty hit was disgusting.

The Bruins used to have a tradition of being tough, and were often dirty. I find that type of hockey dull, for the most part, and it dumbs down hockey. For every great fight or open ice hit, there are a thousand post whistle scrums, hits from behind into the boards, and running a goalie. That stuff bores, or disgusts me.
With player like Macavoy, Pasta, Marchand, Krecji, and Bergeron they are now a skilled, smart, team, and interesting to watch.

I don't hate the Leafs at all.....Never did. They are an insignificant franchise that haven't been to a cup final in my lifetime and have never done anything remotely harsh or controversial to me or my team. Hating them is like hating a small child with learning disabilities.

The Habs basically ruined my spring throughout the late 70s and 80s.........There's still hatred there. And respect.

Leafs fan here and I laughed at your reasoning for not hating my team.

AND, sadly you're 100% right.

We've had to go so long with inept management and so many stupid decisions up to and including Lou and Kyle I shake my head.

They made my spring nice in those days! Sorry hey... :stanley:

Def not most hated. Now, if we're going all sports of an area combined? Yeah, they are definitely top 3 if not 1. They're called Massholes for a reason

Boston Bruins Are The World's Most Hated NHL Team: Reddit (PHOTOS)

It is just a pair of sources. May be I am mistaken. I don’t have a clear picture as Iam living far away from both Canada and the USA. But based on what Iam reading in the internet and watch on YouTube it is just so.

I'd put little emphasis on a publication that refers to "hockey" as "ice hockey". Not that there aren't different forms of hockey but the expression "ice hockey" tends to be used by people who don't follow or know much about the sport.

Most of that could equally said about the Bruins. Kings of regular season who rarely ever perform when it counts. Literally most 100+ point seasons with worst ratio of such to Cups.
