Why Anže Kopitar should be front-runner for MVP

I can't like this thread enough. I just think people always look at offensive stats for the Hart or atleast they are valued higher for some reason. As mentioned before not only playing with the wingers he has but I think more importantly Carter being out for as long as he was really shows how much Kopitar carried our forward core .

I wouldn't mind seeing it happen, but I don't think it will. That's just not the way voting typically goes.

If Colorado makes the playoffs, I think MacKinnon wins it. If he doesn't, it goes to Kucherov.

That's what I think too

Mack or Kucherov. Malkin a possibility if he overtakes Kucherov in scoring race.

A lot of other excellent performances this year but those are still top 3 with 10-12 games to go.

I would love to hear more argumentative reason, could you provide some stats to back up your claims or is it because of hive mind? Have you seen latest rankings for top contenders for Hart? Its outrageous Kopitar wasn't even mentioned in top 6 or 7 players.

His reason is this, the Avs have nothing else to play for so they must have this.

Here's why he shouldn't: Nathan MacKinnon

No disrespect to MacKinnon, but if you have to bottom out as hard as his team did last year to make your case the following season, I don't know if that should be viewed as such a huge plus. It's not like they were bad last year, and ADDED MacKinnon and have suddenly turned around. Are we going to give him more credit this year cause he was less-than-stellar last year?

Also, compare Rantanen with Iafallo. AI has been super impressive, but he's nowhere near on Rantanen's level. Maybe part of that is me wishing the Kings drafted Finns once in a while though, too.

Yeah because Los Angeles is a tiny town and Denver is basically in the eastern time zone, right?

And Colorado is such a stacked team!
Hockey in LA is secondary sport, so its not really relevant he's playing in second biggest city as much. I really don't want to use his country of origin as argument but i bet being from Canada helps aswell. The biggest reason i think that is going against him is his style of play. It doesn't mean its better or worse than the style others are playing, but he isnt about highlight reel goals, he's more about possesion and making the right play. I think results speak for itself that his style doesn't lack in anything other than regular season awards.

You must remember that Kings have 1 playoff win since 2014 stanley cup, missed playoffs 2 times so its not the same team they were. They lack depth just as much as Colorado and NJ, they've traded 2 or 3 first picks in the last 4 seasons so no young players either, since their 2 cups they've lost players like Richards (second scorer on Kings behind Kopi), Voynov (scumbag), Mitchell, Greene, Gaborik and few others ive probably missed. After Kopitar and Doughty there is a huge drop off in quality this season, remember Carter was injured and Quick was less than stellar through some stretches.

The size of the town is irrelevant. The timezone is what matters. The NBC crew was bitching on "national tv" last night at the end of the Kings game that they had to stay up "so late" after Anson Carter called Dustin Brown Dustin Williams. East coast bias is real, and the extra hour helps McKinnon. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Voters: "Who has the crappier linemates. Ok he wins"

Right...

And one would argue that Hall and MacKinnon are making their linemates that good. Why cant the same be said for Kops?

I'd put money on Malkin winning the Hart if he wins the Art Ross, and I'd definitely say he'd win the Hart if he wins the Richard too. People on here really seem to have no idea for how the Hart is actually awarded. People focus on "valuable" way too much, the award is basically voted on based on point totals and winning other awards.

This is really weak tea. Really, really weak.

Los Angeles Kings had 12 NBC broadcast games this year.

Colorado Avalanche had ONE. ONE NBC GAME THIS ENTIRE SEASON.

And you all think there's a f***ing media bias against the Kings and they get less media exposure.

For f***s sake.

Kopitar and to a lesser extent Eric Staal aren’t getting enough attention. Pierre McGuire is the only media member I’ve heard mention Kopitar and he was in his top 3.

Iafallo is a rookie. Brown hasn't had this kind of production in 6 years. If you want to argue that Rantanen and Hischier are just as good as Brown and Iafallo at best, that's fine too.

And nobody's saying that Kopitar should win just because he has crappier linemates. But if we're talking about value to a team, then I'd say taking away Kopitar's production and defensive contributions hurts the Kings more than taking away MacKinnon or Hall from the Avs or Devils.

Kopitar's durability and contributions on both ends of the ice, difficulty of minutes (less powerplay time than Hall and MacKinnon while also playing a lot more on the PK) definitely make him a strong candidate. I'm not saying it's a guarantee, since the voters like to look at easy numbers, but Kopitar has definitely done so much in all facets of the game to elevate the Kings.

Kopitar is a beast, but the Kings aren't doing well enough and his individual stats aren't impressive enough for him to be a front runner. Not good enough "story" unfortunately. Nate, if the Avs make the playoffs, will win the Hart because its a perfect story.

It took Perry scoring 50 goals for the media to notice him in order to win the MVP . If Kopitar scores 100 points he may get the votes, unfortunately the media is in love with McKinnon and Hall and he'll finish in the top 5.

You realize that the people that vote on awards have more channels that just NBC, don't you? No, no you don't. It's not about what channel they are or are not on. It's about how late the games are on for the media on the east coast.

Do you understand now? Probably not.

Do you realize that sports writers don't go to bed at 9 PM and typically watch west coast games, considering it's their job? No, you probably don't. And that wasn't my point anyways.

Just because Anson f***ing Carter complained once about a late game as a joke doesn't mean sports writers in the PHWA don't watch LA Kings games. Give me a break dude. It's an hour difference.

he's been a better player this year and has been the key cog in Avalanche being a potential playoff team. He beats Kopitar in points, relative cf%, relative gf%, and relative xgf%

Kopitar should be in the top 5 though

Mackinnon doesn't have a Doughty level defenseman helping out. Any kind of case can be made for so and so over another.

What does Doughty have to do with Kopitar having 7 times the PK time that MacKinnon has? If PK was so easy, why not have a lesser forward eat those minutes so Kopitar can eat more minutes... you know, like MacKinnon?

Kopitar is part of the reason the Kings have one of the best penalty kills.

He also outproduces his teammates offensively by a sizeable amount.

Anze's great and maybe if it was last year, he'd be up there, but it's a different season and the guys I listed are playing very well.
