Friedman: Penguins Waiting For Kyle Dubas To Make A Decision

SPORTSNET

May 27, 2023 32 Thoughts

Elliotte Friedman joins Ron MacLean to give the latest front office intel around the NHL, including the Pittsburgh Penguins' interest in Kyle Dubas and a host of teams making decisions on head coach vacancies.

I'm surprised Friedman didn't elaborate with more details..."Kyle needs to speak to his family, and then put in a counter-offer through his agent..." :sarcasm:

Despite having 3 years left on his Blues contract you can still hope MLSE has enough persuasion to bring Doug Armstrong in.
The fact that Armstrong has not come out publicly and said he is under contract and happy there is curious. I wonder why he hasn't killed the fervor around him already.

Doug Maclean said on the Kyper show this week that he thinks Shanny is going to make a big splash in some way with the new GM. Let's see what he can do.

I'm just worried the new coach will keep Keefe - I can't watch another season of him coach this time. I'm wondering if Dallas freaking Eakins would have done a better job

The fact that nothing has been done yet is indicative that Shanahan had no Plan B if Dubas wasn't coming back

What an embarrassment, Shanahan needs to get canned too as far as I'm concerned

Looking at his draft history, it was pretty bad. Only NHL players with over 100 games he produced from 2008-2013 include Hodgson (bust), Schroeder (meh), Connauton (meh), Jensen ( solid), Gaunce (meh), Ben Hutton (meh), Horvat (great).

In 6 drafts he produced a #1B Center from a top 10 pick, a decent top 4 dman and then a bunch of fringe players.

Does the drafting really matter at this point? Unless we liquidate the core for futures, any picks the new GM makes probably won’t make the NHL before his/Shanny’s contracts expire.

That's likely true but you occasionally get a player like Knies who surprises and makes an impact early.

You'll always need a steady pipeline of replacement support players, even if it means for the next guy. People like to harp on Dubas for not having produced more NHL players making an impact for the Leafs now which is unrealistic given his prospects age and draft position. That's where Hunter failed. Most of his prospects didn't even play for the Marlies, let alone give us the cheap replacements on the Leafs that we've needed to support our core these last few years.

Another thing I would add is that having good prospects in your pipeline can be used as assets in trades. Like how Knies was coveted by every team in the league in trade discussions. You won't acquire good roster players in trades if your prospects are mediocre at best.

I think his hand was forced at the last minute and what likely pissed him off, but if he lands lets say armstrong out of ST louis do you still feel the same way?

If he hired someone, people here would say oh that was to fast and he didn't interview others. If he takes his time interviewing, oh it's an embarrasment and shanny sucks lol.... we as a fan base can never be satisfied

If you look at the entirety of Doug Wilson's tenure he's an excellent GM - What scares me most is his few final years as GM...not pretty. Makes me think the game may have passed him by.

Does Doug Armstrong have any interest in being GM of the Leafs? So far, he hasn’t said yes and more importantly he hasn’t said no. Whether the Leafs have approached St. Louis ownership about getting permission to talk to Armstrong is another matter entirely. Can’t believe Brendan Shanahan will find a GM with better credentials than Armstrong … A phone call I would make if I were Shanahan: Hello, Jon Cooper. Any interest in being a GM? …

Old story: When Shanahan wooed Lou Lamoriello out of New Jersey to come and work for the Leafs in 2015, he had been doing GM interviews prior to the hiring. Near the top of his list at the time was Los Angeles executive Mike Futa. My belief then: If he didn’t get Lamoriello, Futa would have been the Leafs GM … Shanahan, by the way, was best man at Sean Burke’s first wedding. Burke is the goaltending coach in Vegas. It doesn’t appear as though he has gotten any consideration for the Leafs GM job, which is where Burke had hoped to be in the future

The belief when Shanahan took over the Leafs: We are the Maple Leafs, we need to have the best of everything. The best coaches. The best front office people. The most progressive thinkers. You can’t consider Marc Bergevin, Peter Chiarelli or Jason Botterill to be the next GM if you’re still thinking that way

I tend to agree with this due to the current situation, because of the the big money overpaid underproducing player contracts already on the books with pending NMC clauses and tough to remove, the new GM walks into a pretty dicey situation full of landmines..

Too much cap in too few players is a recipe for disaster to inherit on day #1, where the solution is to deal one of the fan favourite $11 mil players.

New GM is not going to be welcomed to Toronto if one of his 1st moves is to send Marner packing in a blockbuster deal to Philly or Winnipeg regardless of the return even if it makes the team better. Deal Matthews even worse recourse even if the GM knew Matthews was not prepared to re-sign or his demands too high and could walk as a UFA one year later.

So Doug Armstrong in 3 years time after this all potentially implodes and all these current contracts might be off the books might be better timing to come in and restore and stabilize the franchise.
If AM bolts I hope Shanny gets canned ASAP.....

I think the club passed him by. Being faithful to an aging core plus a board who doesn't want to let go of playoff revenue. Same as in Chicago and same as in Pittsburgh but those clubs went all the way first. He has no history with this lineup and he will be charged primarily with winning. Thats the biggest positive about going outside the organization. Fresh eyes.

I don't recall being wowed by any of Wilson's moves except for acquiring Joe Thornton and fleecing Boston, but then again, that move, while it made SJ very competitive, it led Boston to even greater things.

I think their drafts were very well run by Tim Burke who, I believe, is still there.

Apart from that, I'm not really sure about him. He does have a sense of calm though and is extremely well liked around the league - a class act.

If the votes for this thread were made public, you would see that most of the Bergevin votes are just Habs fans troll voting for him because they know he's garbage.

Don't listen to this preposterous calumny!

Bergevin wins all his trades... y'know

We even had a poster calling him The Maestro and no, it wasn't sarcasm.
