I feel like I am in a bad dream.

As much as I loved Kyle Dubas, I am not beyond thinking he was the only one who could get us where we need to go. That said, the list of available candidates is bleak. There is not even 1 name that gets me even remotely excited or hopeful.

This just feels like a disaster in the making.

Woke up and me:

DailyFaceoff's Frank Seravalli mentions Brad Treliving once again as the top candidate for the Toronto Maple Leafs GM job.

What role could Iginla have with Flames and is Treliving the front-runner for Leafs job?

DailyFaceoff's Frank Seravalli joins Sportsnet Central to discuss the hot topics around the NHL world including the Flames' front-office revamp, who is leading the pack for Leafs' GM and does Dubas want Penguins' job?

Bowman and Q would be a terrific combo .. experienced Cup winners .. if Shanny is gonna go off of experience then this is combo i would go with .. but TBH this entire group of managers is pretty weak

please have a look at Bowman's actual resume over his last 3 years as GM. He ended Chicago's dynasty some of those trades are so yuck ugh.

Also he hired Colliton....

Who do you believe should be the next GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs? This is for discussion of what we should do going forward, not discussion of past GM's?

Some names I've seen mentioned. Pridham, Tulsky, Bowman, Treliving, Botterill, Brad Holland, Spezza, Ryan Hardy, Wickenheiser.....
If it's true that shanahan is telling his core 4 that they are all coming back , u might just as well hire GORD STELLICK
He was a great lame duck

Once you deplete all your assets it’s very difficult to support a core moving forward.
Especially a core that lacks jam to begin with.

Bowman was on a decline, nothing to support the salary structure.

Even Pittsburgh suffered. They lost all their depth shortly after the 2008-09 Cup and took 7 years to build it back up and have the assets to trade for Kessel.

I think the Leafs are now on a build it up, not win now. That depth has past.

he traded:

- Zadorov for a third rounder
- Adam Boqvist, 1st rounder 2021 (#12 overall - Cole Dillinger), 2nd rounder 2021 (#44 overall - Aleksi Heimosalmi), 1st rounder 2022 (#6 overall David Jiricek!) for Seth Jones, TB first (Nolan Allen at 32nd overall) and a 6th
-Artemi Panarin for Brandon Saad

these are probably worse than Dubas' worst trades and Im not even particularly a giant Dubas fan but Bowman has sexual assault cover up stench and is bad at his job

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Draft-pick compensation for the hiring of coaches and executives from other teams will be eliminated, effective Jan. 1, Commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday following the completion of the Board of Governors meeting.

The original policy was put into effect Jan. 1, 2015, in part to allow for compensation for coaches and executives under contract who departed for a position with another team. But it morphed to include coaches and executives who had been fired but remained under contract.

Now the League will return to the previous policy, which requires teams to grant permission to its coaches and executives under contract to interview with other teams. If permission is granted and the coach or executive changes teams, there will no longer be any compensation to the team losing personnel.

"On balance, it just wasn't worth the debate, the confusion, the uncertainty that flowed from it," Commissioner Bettman said. "Frankly, I thought the old policy worked very well. I think you remember from the GM Meeting [November 2014], one of the caveats that I put into place when I agreed to implement the revised policy was that if there are any problems with this we will scrap it and go back to what we had. That ultimately happened. We deferred to the will of the GMs for a year, we tried it, and I think we were better off with the policy we had."

Commissioner Bettman said the Board agreed fully with reverting to the previous policy.

"I asked if there was any discussion or comment before I announced that that was the decision I was going to make, and there was none," Commissioner Bettman said. "So overwhelmingly, I think people, having heard the presentation and seen the experience over the past year, decided what we had that worked well for 10 years roughly was probably the best way to go."

There was discussion about modifying the policy to prohibit teams from receiving compensation for fired coaches and executives, but the League felt fired coaches and executives would have to be included if the newer policy were to remain in effect.

"What we had worked very well for 10 years," Commissioner Bettman said. "There was a sentiment by some of the managers that we should do something different. I resisted it for a while, and then, perhaps against my better judgment, I deferred to them to try it. But again, when I discussed this with the Executive Committee they were all in agreement that going back to what we had was the correct thing."

The policy in place this year allowed the Vancouver Canucks to secure a second-round draft pick when coach John Tortorella was hired by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 21. Tortorella hadn't coached for the Canucks since the end of the 2013-14 season, but he was still under contract. The Toronto Maple Leafs had to sacrifice third-round draft picks to the Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils for hiring coach Mike Babcock in May and general manager Lou Lamoriello in September.

.........................

"I think it was pretty clear all the reasons supporting why it's been eliminated," Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan said. "It's unfortunate for us the year in which they tried it out was a year in which we were seeking [a coach and GM], but I can't complain and look back. If we had to do it all over again we would still go out and do it if we were acquiring somebody like Mike and Lou. At the end of the day there are certain things you can control and other things you can't, so I support their decision today to take it away."

I'd like to make a write-in vote for myself.

I'm not exactly qualified. But I'd probably be better than like 3 or 4 guys on the actual poll. Looking at you specifically, Chiarelli.

IF doug armstrong wants the job then its his imo. there are some rumblings he has an out clause for a few teams and i bet TO would be one of them, now does he want to remove president from his resume? thats another thing. but, he would be my 1st choice.

You gotta check your notes though. The Hawks dynasty was mostly assembled by Dale Tallon, who also built the foundation of Florida. Bowman came in and presided over the cup wins.

I tend to agree but think he got better with time like Dubas; the

yeah, I’m fully on board the thinking Dubas was going to make a huge move, no doubt in my mind now.
Seravalli also confirms the earlier reporting that he tried to push Shanahan out with full autonomy and direct line to board. He said he suspects that to be the primary reason for Shanahan axing Dubas and it has little to nothing to do with the increased money demand

I’m really worried with Shanahan the lone cowboy at the reins. I’m also quite worried that he will turn off a few potential candidates because he seems a power greedy pig and any GM that with experience and worth anything will need autonomy.

Yep. I think he’s desperate for the Leaf job and will give up autonomy for it, which will please Shananhan who won’t give up that power
So dubas tried to stab the person who gave him his start in the back and thats the guy you wanted to keep? Not that Shanny hasnt made some mistakes but he did take a team that sucked hard for a decade and his decisions did bring this team some success. We will see if he can bring it over the finish line and if not he will be gone as well.

I hope it’s someone out for the blue that no one is talking about. Let’s keep things interesting in leaf land.

Sure, of course. On some teams, (usually very established) GMs get to be President too.

But it goes GM -> President -> Owner on many teams - this isn't a new thing, or at all abnormal really but it's kind of being painted as unfair or crazy that first time GM who'd never won a round had a President to report to and I think that's a bit odd.

As to your ownership meddling part... we really never heard anything about ownership + Dubas aside from that he was allowed to hire 437535 assistant GMs, and that he got basically a blank cheque in terms of staff, resources, scouts, etc.

I'd say I was a Dubas supporter but it seems like there's this effort in the media right now with sources trying to place why he didn't succeed here on anyone but him and I think that's kind of revisionist, tbh.
If things trickle down from the top then we now know why the fab 4 are the way they are......The lack of accountibility by those guys is pretty clear especially when listening to other players from other teams after being knocked out. As soon as Marner was like well we had our chances, it was close, if Im gm he is gone. Oreilly and Reilly the only ones who really placed the blame on themselves. You are not winning jackshi*t in this league with that kind of attitude.

Next GM should be:

Mats Sundin

One thing that has been a real weakness in the Leafs organization is our important ex-players don’t seem to become great executives. Guys like Sundin, Sittler, Gilmour, Clark, none of them really graduated to being serious executives. Closest ones I can think of are Bryan McCabe who became a Panthers guy and Tom Fitzgerald who was never really a prominent Leaf. And I guess Ron Francis who was here for a couple of weeks.
