Friedge brought up some names in his latest 32 thoughts pod, some to say he doesn't expect they will be involved and some to say he expects to be very involved in the GM search:

-Brad Treliving: The way they were talking about him (and mostly about him) it really sounds like he's the heavy frontrunner. All the other names talked about after him were brief mentions.
-George McPhee: Doubtful that he would leave his POHO position in Vegas to report under Shanahan.
-Doug Armstrong: Doubtful that he would leave his position running the show in St. Louis to report under Shanahan.
-Mike Gillis: Could be a name in the mix.
-Garth Snow: Could be a name in the mix.
-Mark Hunter: Could be a name in the mix.
-Marc Bergevin: Could be a name in the mix.

Trading Tavares for Doughty might make for a worthwhile change if one is of the belief that Toronto has too much of its cap allocated to forwards. Conversely, the proposed trade might not accomplish nearly as much if one is of the belief that the team has too much of its cap tied up in only a handful of players.

Tavares is a leaf for life. He's not going anywhere

My concern right now is just how meddlesome is Shanahan? I can’t imagine many of the guys we would want being interested in that kind of power struggle situation either.

Very cool! Love to be a dysfunctional franchise again, feels like home.

If that’s even a somewhat common sentiment in hockey circles then ax Shanahan right now. We need top quality candidates. Lists with names like Snow and Bergevin are unacceptable

Either Seravelli or Fox said one GM said he would give his left ??? to be GM of the Maple Leafs. There will many willing candidates as Friedman said.

Another GM who fit the description said he would not come here because Shanny was "airing his dirty laundry" in his presser or something to that effect.

Our organization is looking terrible right now.

Dubas was a self-proclaimed Analytics guy. Tulsky created Corsi as a measurement and has a Harvard Physics/Chemistry degree and a PHD in Chemistry from UC Berkley (probably the top public university in the United States). I'm sure he has a pretty deep understanding of the flaws of stats. Dubas was an analytics guy in the sense of most people here who embrace analytics in that they know how to read them, but good luck getting them to figure out how to create and change inputs on a mass scale or create new measurements.

I’d hire this guy. He also has AGM experience.

The next GM will be nothing more than a lame duck till its Shanahans head on the chopping block,

You wont find a good GM willing to slot in below a President and Board like Rogers/Bell

Cliff Fletcher 3.0 coming up

Maybe then, when the next savior comes in with full autonomy, we can move forward.

I cant see any scenario where Shanahan was meddling with Lou. If it was true this year, this may have come about because Kyle was in his last year, and/or lack of playoff success.

As entertaining as that press conference was, it's definitely not a good look to be sharing all those details and may give some of the higher end names pause.

Lol futa literally said they had to report to owners and President on trades before going down too. Why do people on here think that a gm doesn't have to report big trades to their bosses and owners?? If I was an owner I'd want to know before hand also lol.... you all relax. A president has to be involved too, looks like shanny saved us from losing Knies.

Treliving has significant experience and in a Canadian market. He has drafted Tkachuk, Bennett and Fox and he has made several significant trades. Making the playoffs in 5 of 9 NHL seasons. He is a worthy candidate.

I also like Mellanby. He's never had a main role but he has lots of experience as an assistant GM and he is apparently doing well in GM discussions lately and would be a good choice for a leader of a franchise given the way he played and role he held for much of his career.

Mark Hunter and Dale Hunter would also be at the top of my list. They had Mark and Dubas and ultimately chose Dubas. With Dubas moving on, the role he was 2nd in line for last time has come available again.

Tulsky sounds like Dubas without the experience.

I don't particularly think he's going anywhere either. I'm also not necessarily convinced that this trade idea will change much for a team that bowed out of the playoffs due to a lack of scoring.
I think the vision to go for with Tavares is to see if we can change how he is perceived by himself and make him all in to realize whatever it takes with all his flaws and positives serviceable enough in the playoffs. There is change coming regardless so how do we maximize this.

Not every team is run the same way and does not have the anatomy as you are quoting it to gloss over for simplicity.

Hiring Trelivng would be the start of a new dark era. We'll get a few years of mediocrity, some bad long term contracts, then a date with the tank train by 2030.

Gillis/Snow/Hunter/Bergevin are laughably sad names to even mention as a possibility. Really highlights how dire the situation is. We better hope Shanahan has an ace up his sleeve. If not the Shannaplan is officially dead.
