If it's true what the reports say about Shanahan wielding massive influence/vetoing trades, then really, he is just the de facto gm and it doesn't matter who gets brought in.

With small nuggets about how he doesn't value toughness/hits, if the Leafs don't grow any balls next year, then truly, Shanahan was running the show all along.
So who was he vetoing, more small, skilled players?

Stan Bowman for sure.
No one has his pedigree that is available, No one. Him and Quenville for one more run. They go this route, I do believe they win a few cups .

I guess one could say Stan Bowman is to GMs what Matt Murray is to goaltending. :wg:

Stanley Cups from years ago mean little in the what have you done for me lately analysis.
You think? You think he doesn't have more knowledge to draw on than the others?

Maple Leafs looking for next GM to possess ‘bite’, willingness to make tough choices

2:20 | May 20, 2023

Elliotte Friedman discusses the latest news surrounding the Maple Leafs GM search, how the Dubas extension ultimately crumbled, and how other teams are responding following the news.

Inevitable that we'll yo-yo to a veteran GM after things fell apart with neophyte Dubas. These things tend to go in cycles like that, like when they went from JFJ to Burke.

I'm a little nervous about going to one of the retreads with "experience," but I do think this is an occasion where we need a seasoned pro to get the next contracts for the core guys right this time.

I don't really care who it is - clean slate here and lots of decisions but no emotional attachment to anyone. Caring shouldn't be good enough

Please, not Treliving. Not the guy that traded Tkachuk, the guy who has put Florida on his shoulders, coming up big in OT, and is tough as nails. Not the guy who didn't get anything close to equivalency for giving up that kind of player.
You know Tkachuk was not resigning with Calgary and pretty much forced a trade to wherever he wanted to go. Kind of like what Matthews might do to us.

I keep seeing people saying this but it was Tkachuk that wanted out. He told management he wasnt planning on re-signing with them after Gaudreau walked. So they got the best deal they could from a team that Tkachuk was willing to go to.

There's way too much smoke around Treliving for it not to be him at this point. Apparently Tanenbaum and Treliving's dad go way back. I've also seen Mirtle and others mention that they've heard Treliving's name connected to this job as early as March (he specifically said on his podcast that he received a text from a source on March 10th that Treliving will be the Leafs next GM).

Coincidentally, March 10th was after the trade deadline, when Shanahan claims he told Dubas he had seen enough that he thought at that time Dubas should remain GM. My guess is something happened in March, and that was when Shanahan actually started to consider new GM possibilities (contrary to what was said in his presser).

Anyone else think it's weird too how Treliving walked away from the Flames GM job a month after his name started coming up in rumours in Toronto? At this point there's so much smoke around Treliving that I would be shocked if it wasn't him.

All that being said, I voted Tulsky. I think he would be the best choice by far.

At the time of the trade, it can be argued Treliving did fine value wise. Huberdeau was regarded as one of the best offensive players in the league but once again people vastly underestimate what playing in a high flying no-defense system like Florida did last year can do for a player's offensive numbers. Adding Weegar on top of that had people almost unanimously agreeing that Calgary won the trade.

Also - Gaudreau lead the league in ES scoring by a dramatic amount and many people speculated that Tkachuk had his production inflated by him. Turned out to be the other way around.

Treliving made a classic Dubas error. That was the winger version of the Tyson Barrie - Kadri trade.

Most of the good players were set in place by the previous GM anyways...this guy basically pulled a Kyle Dubas and just whittled the talent away to nothing. He is literally on the Chiarelli level as far as I am concerned.
If not worse.

Panarin trade is probably up there with Eric Lindros, Markus Naslund and Joe Thornton trades as one of the worst ever.

Treliving is definitely the easiest option for Shanny. He's available, a vet with experience, ect. I won't be surprised if he's the front runner even if I'm not thrilled with him as a candidate.

Tkchuck said he wasnt going to resign with the team and instead of lose him for nothing he turned it into Huberdeau and Weeger - Not a bad return .... He reacted to Gaudreau not resigning by signing Kadri - Not a bad move either .

He should do the same with Marner and Mathews if they dont want to sign reasonable deals - move them out for assets .

Definitely very vanilla and a lot of red flags with his last couple years.
