Not this simple, but there is a pretty big difference in drafting between these 2

He got hired in 2014 so I don't know how much credit to give to Treliving for it but 2015-2019 not bad

2015 - Andersson, Kylington Mangipane
2016 - Tkachuk, Dube Fox
2017 - Valimaki
2018 - Nothing
2019 - Pelletier and Wolf seem like they're about to make the team
2020 - Too soon but Zary close
2021- Coronato just signed - too soon
2022 - 3 picks and not much to go off of currently.

You never know, they might give full autonomy to the right person. I just think Dubas didn’t do anything to inspire autonomy

Hearing that Dubas needed hand holding, and babysitting (lots a assistant GMs) and parental supervision (from Shanny) and approval on some of his moves isn't really coming as a surprise.. Dubas was never qualified for the job in the first place and as such Shanny and others certainly would have wanted a say and more than a passing interest in what he was doing and thinking.

Shanny moving on from HHOF GM Lou Lam after a record breaking season to put his own puppet Dubas in place without NHL experience, could very well have been about Shanny wanting more autonomy in decisons he likely wouldn't have gotten from Lou in shaping his Shan-A-Plan going forward.

Once they put Dubas into a lame duck position uncertain about his future in an expiring contract more than ever would you want sign-off authority required from above to make sure he wasn't making moves that would have long-term detrimental impact, and CYA type moves without consequences..

Now you make an interesting pointing on what type of automy the new GM will receive with the big core 4 contract decisons looming on sign or trade. etc. Shanny did say he wanted a new GM with experience this time.

He had amazing drafts in 2015 and 2016. I mean those years were stacked with talent but he still did well relative to that. Pretty barren since.

Having said that...I think GM's get too much credit/blame for drafts that are often heavily influenced by scouting and other stuff.

Craig Button would be a fun choice.
I was going to post that very same thing .. Button does have experience in the position from the past through Dallas Stars and worked in all departments including scouting .

Early career with Minnesota North Stars and Dallas Stars

Button began his NHL management career in 1988 with the Minnesota North Stars. He was the Director of Scouting for Dallas Stars 1992–98, Director of Player Personnel for Dallas Stars 1998–2000. During this time, Button worked for hockey legends Bobby Clarke and Bob Gainey. While with the Stars, the team participated in two Stanley Cup Finals, winning in 1999, and were recipients of the Presidents' Trophy on two occasions. The list of players drafted during his tenure include Derian Hatcher, Jere Lehtinen, Jamie Langenbrunner, Marty Turco, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow.

Calgary Flames
He replaced Al Coates as the Vice President and General Manager of the Calgary Flames in 2000.

TSN
Button is currently TSN's Director of Scouting, drawing on his intimate knowledge of the game and its players to deliver insight on the NHL's top prospects He is also a key analyst on TSN's That's Hockey.

Having someone of Button's experience in the amateur scouting would certainly be beneficial when making player trades of core pieces and potential prospect returns included.

Isn't this interesting. If this is the case than Shanny kept him around way too long,

Friedman seems to think Doug Armstrong is the perfect candidate for the Leafs GM position. He's obviously signed in St. Louis for another 3 years so its really shocking his name is being put out there.

but I wonder if he asked Friedman to float his name out there to let Shanahan know that he's interested in the job indirectly cause Friedman was talking him up like crazy.

If they had the chance of getting Armstrong, he would be my number one choice.

Some people have outs in their contracts for certain circumstances.

Like I used to hear that Boudreau had an out in some of his contracts for the Leafs, if they came calling he could answer.

Armstrong is an Ontario man whose already given St. Louis a Cup. Maybe he's done enough or negotiated a way out if Toronto was interested.

This is a list with not even one game of GM experience. Grass is always greener, right?
Tulsky is basically the gm. It's like saying omg how could you make Matthews captain? He's go no experience being captain.

I don't think Tulsky would come to Toronto. Therefore my pick would be Brad. He got more than most thought he would get for Tkachuk. He should have been more proactive with Gaudreau though.

Just like the Islanders should have been with Tavares and maybe even us with Mathews, Nylander and Marner.

Shanahan says he wants experince, I think Brad is the best of the lot then.

Screw it, let's just bring back good ol' Cliff Fletcher for his 3rd crack at it.
He is already there, no need to bring him back if you want to "Clear the Slate" again

What about Cliff's boy Chuck Fletcher?

if Toronto is the mecca and can anyone we want and Colorado is a mid tier valued team in the NHL.. I want Joe Sakic. Make it happen Toronto.
