Maybe the reason why we keep having to trade our captains is because we give the C to non-elite players?
wondering where it is written that you have to be an "elite" player to become Captain. For me, it has everything to do with being a leader. On the ice and in the room. Clearly Trocheck isn't the prototypical "elite" player, but I'll be damned if he isn't the type of player that would do "anything" for his team at any given time. Also, hardly seems to be introverted, which was a negative when it came to McD and others. But, what do I know.

From current roster, I'd give C to young building block in one of Laf / Cuylle / Schneider. I fear Fox would be hampered by it too much like Mac and Leetch were. Trocheck and Kreider are obvious choices if coaches / mgmt want a bridge to one of them. Beauty is, there's zero rush to name one.
Always stated it should "never" be a defenseman. Down a goal and needing one, do you want Fox saying "I'll get it for us" or do you want somebody like Laffy? All a defenseman can sensibly say is that I'll do whatever I can do, to not get down by 2 goals.

I want to change my vote to Will Cuylle. He's the only guy on the roster whose play has been that of a leader, since Drury called the team out. The rest has been meaningless lip service to the media.
Regardless that I chose Tro, I'm right there with you. His play has gotten BETTER, hasn't wilted with the hurricane surrounding this team. Wouldn't be adverse to it, but man that is a lot of pressure for a kid, and his resume is way too small. Can't imagine he would be able to stand up and stare down Kreider telling him he isn't giving it his all. Know what I mean?

The captaincy needs to happen organically this team, like it did with Callahan. kreider will soon be gone and the main core phased out imo. Trocheck as a stopgap captain IF they think they need one. But Vinny and Cuylle are close, and of all the vets i think Trocheck is the best example for Cuylle to follow. He'll get an A before long.

I don't think we have a good candidate right now. Mika's game has gone to shit and if he and Chris are pouting over Trouba and Goodrow that's not real leadership. The other thing is you have to be a leader not just in the locker room but on the ice. Making big plays when they need to happen at least some of the time. To me the guy who most exemplifies what a captain should be is Cuylle but it's too early for him. He's a north south physical player who will fight---go hard into battle areas and he's beginning to produce. You could see a young Jamie Benn or a Mark Stone there....but if my read on the current climate in the locker room is dysfunctional that's another reason why you wouldn't want to name a younger player or anyone at all.

Vinny as a stop gap C. Otherwise this is Lafs team and he should get it. Unless Cullye keeps this up then I wouldnt mind seeing him with it.
With Igors contract its his team now. Also, Laf is a clown, hardly captain material.

The team will eventually choose their leader organicly when that individual emerges.

it's absolutely laf. he is the future of this franchise as a leader, his teammates love him, and when it mattered as they got deeper in the playoffs - he stepped up and was right there with igor as the best players on the team.

i wouldn't take issue tho if they gave it to trocheck or kreider, assuming they name a c this year, and have laf take over as the roster turns over. laf might not even feel right about it with those guys still around anyway, which helps no one.
