The person to be captain needs charisma and has to be a natural leader. The kind of person people have to answer to if they screw up and gets the locker room fired up. Laffy, Trocheck, Fox, Panarin, Kreider (if he stays) are all good players but are all soft spoken avoiding the spot light. I was talking to a fellow R fan tonight and he said when Messier came on the team he took his locker and moved it right to the center of the locker room, he was in charge - if you screwed up you answered to him and he was a leader. Then Leetch became his right hand man. How can the Rangers get that kind of leadership? Right now only through a trade.

Letters are mostly symbolic: leaders will lead with or without them.

The only player on this team who might need a letter is Trochek. Cuz he's gonna yap the refs no matter what and a letter on him helps lower risk of unneeded penalties

I like Schneider for it . I think we are going to see him much more involved and a bit more physical and he will at least back it up by dropping the gloves if challenged ,He could be the biggest winner in the Trouba deal. He is young but has put some years in here and we know he is not feeble or a coward .

. Schneider -Laf-Cuylle....they have the rest of the season to lay claim .

While we’re on the subject, this Karl Marx, Frederick Engels theory on all these Assistant Captains has got to go.
Three “A”s until a Captain is picked and then two after.
Don’t give anyone the “C” and make Quick their unofficial captain.

I thought it should have been Foxy before they announced Trouba. He’s not the vocal guy but he’s a competitor and one of the absolute best players in the game. He’s extremely even keel, never too high and never too low which is a phenomenal leadership trait. He’s also young and he’ll be here for a long time.
Looking up to the sky everytime he doesn't agree with the ref, is not something that i want the other players to follow that kind of leadership and Fox doesn't care about his bad play. because if he did, he would have worked on his skating since he's been in the league

That easily enough could be Laf you are describing in the above reply . I don't see Laf as captain material at this time....maybe in 3 years he might be if he outgrows the entitled look after a missed chance on net .

Is Laffy the future of this franchise? If he is, you start molding him, now.
Agreed. I think he has that dawg in him, but he's become more of a finesse player this season. If he can capture that Landeskog-like skill/grit mentality, and I think he can, I'd be all for slapping the C on him. But it's going to take time.

I like Trocheck, but I think he's too much of a rat to wear the C. The rest of the core guys on the list clearly don't want it (Fox/Kreider/GodHelpUsMika).
