I'm fully on board the Manny train now. Someone is going to give him a shot and win big so why not us. Not too inspired by Lavy as Rangers were a trainwreck defensively/structurally. Woodcraft...eww, don't want Oilers leftovers.

Manny is just so smart and seems like all the players love him and will play hard for him. Any shot is a long shot anyways to keep Hughes so we have to not be afraid to try something different.

Canucks’ Coaching Search
  • Canucks did a whole bunch of interviews last week
  • Malhotra’s name is out there
  • Believe’s interest in Marco Sturm is legitimate
  • This week, the Canucks will have a short list of 3 or 4 candidates; thinks Sturm and Malhotra will be on that list
Rick Tocchet
  • Doesn’t have a great feel for where he will end up
  • Was on Anaheim’s radar but don’t think those talks went far
  • Seattle was very interested but not convinced that is where Tocchet wants to go
  • He turned down 4m(ish) from the Canucks and doesn’t see the Bruins offering more than the Canucks did
  • Has always believed that he was high on Philadelphia’s list but have heard that maybe that’s not necessarily true; people have pushed back on Tocchet going there in the last few days
  • There are people that are convinced he’s going to just be on TNT next season
Coaching Quality
  • Peter Laviolette and Gerard Gallant both want to prove that what happened with the Rangers, to both of them, was not about them as coaches
  • DJ Smith and Greg Cronin are interested in showing that they learned a lot from their first head coaching jobs
  • Only a matter of time until Jeff Halpern gets a chance to be a head coach
  • Comes down to when teams are willing to take a chance on a new coach
  • Has been told that Mitch Love has a strong chance to end up a head coach somewhere for next season
Marco Sturm
  • Is a pretty ambitious guy; has been sending signals for a couple of years that he would like to be a NHL head coach
  • Is also on Boston’s radar
  • Has been an NHL assistant before and really wanted to run a bench to show he could do it
  • Would want to coach the Canucks; wants to prove that he can be the kind of coach that they need

When it came to Tocchett said I don’t know and mentioned 4-5 possibilities. When it came to Canucks, talked exclusively about Sturm, moving quickly off of Malholtra who Dhaliwahl suggested.

That’s because Sturm is what Friedman has been reporting since last week and isn’t as known a commodity as Malhotra. Today, he just repeated what he said on 32 Thoughts from last Friday.

IMO, it’s also possible the Canucks haven’t engaged in many formal talks with Malhotra so as not to distract from Abbotsford’s playoff run.

But also IMO, the longer this goes, the more likely Malhotra is their guy. And I’ve got no problem with that.

Or that guy is still in the NHL playoffs or just eliminated and waiting on a team to decide his fate

I wouldn't say Sturm is less of a known commodity as Malhotra, at least not around the league. Sturm was interviewed by the Kings last summer for a head coaching position and his name was included in some coaching candidate lists.

Arguably, Sturm was also a better and more well known hockey player than Malhotra.

I’m not talking about around the league but in this market. Which is who Friedman is addressing.

My guess is it will be Malhotra.

I'm shocked LA has kept Hiller. I thought removing him at the same time as Blake and handing the reins ( :sarcasm: ) to Sturm would be a no brainer.

So I'm gathering that the 3-4 person shortlist includes all three of Sturm, Foote and Malhotra. I guess the question is who is #4?

Some other coach that will sign cheap and is hoping to get any NHL head coaching gig. It's clear none of the established coaches want anything to do with VAN.

Lol, are the leading candidates really Malhotra, Foote, and Sturm? Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel. Pure Canucks situation, they try to sign Malhotra and goes somewhere else.

Manny is probably the best bet to somehow get through to Pettersson and get his game back compared to Foote or any of the available dinosaur coaches. It could be a good thing - Spencer Carbery type bet. Risky but predictable.

i'd be all for malhotra if the canucks weren't hell bent on trying to be competitive in the next couple seasons. i think he's got a lot of potential and if the team had time for him to learn on the job and grow up with a young team it could result in a pretty great situation. i'm a little more skeptical of how he'll do with a team like the canucks that lacks veteran leadership and has a bunch of outstanding problems that need solving

if they hire foote i'm going to be really disappointed. that'll plainly be an attempt to appeal to hughes which yeah they need to go all out to resign him but letting him basically run the team isn't going to result in anything good

I would rather manny than many of the retreads out there. There is honestly no coach I am like yes that should be the guy!

I mean yes, given the Canucks will obviously not been in the running for anyone except those desperate for employment, or without HC experience, I'd say Manny is probably it by default.

Hiring a coach based on name value isn't always a good idea, especially when the market for the "popular" coaches is so barren. I'd much rather any of the three rumoured candidates over a Laviolette or Woodcroft.

Many of the top coaches in the league right now like Cooper, Cassidy, and Brind'Amour would've been considered scraping the bottom of the barrel when they were first hired.

Carbery in WSH and Arniel in WPG give me some hope with Manny, although the Willie Desjardins era has me scarred regarding AHL coaches.
