Speaking of Willie, at the time I think he was the second oldest first time NHL head coach (not counting GMs who filled in as head coach and assistant coaches who took over on an interim basis). If Velluci gets an NHL head coaching position he would take over as the second oldest and push Willie own to 5th.

Some coaching stuff from Rick Dhaliwal's interview with Halford (Dodd) & Brough.

Canucks’ Coaching Search
  • Adam Foote is still in the mix; he hasn’t told the organization he’s leaving
  • Keeps hearing Malhotra’s name
  • Cites Rod Brind’amour getting a head coaching job with no experience and points out how Rutherford played a role in making that happen after he retired
  • Rutherford has hired coaches without NHL head coaching experience before
  • If the Abbotsford Canucks keep winning and the Vancouver Canucks don’t name a coach, then we’ll know Malhotra is the next head coach of the Vancouver Canucks
  • Waiting for Malhotra will mean that other candidates drop out
  • Canucks are interviewing a lot of AHL coaches right now
  • Don’t underestimate the impact the Sedins have had on the Abbotsford Canucks
  • If the Canucks hire Malhotra, they need to hire some experienced assistant coaches
  • Doesn’t know what Adam Foote is going to do; is a very important piece in Vancouver
  • Thinks Pascal Vincent is on the Canucks’ radar
  • There are some timing issues because several coaches are still in the playoffs
  • Says money is a factor

Sometimes Rick sprinkles in some really dumb shit that makes me listening to him more of a hate listen then a regular listen.

He talked about the Canucks stepping up their offer to tocchet, and then poses the question, if the Canucks hire Malhotra (ora similar experience coach) are they going to offer the same contract?

Uh no Rick, why would they? It's words just to say words. They're not going to bring Manny up from abbotsford and make him the highest paid canucks coach ever with no nhl experience.

Oh yeah and when he was talking about Willander being unsigned, which he may as well have just been Todd diamond wearing Rick's skin, he referenced RJ Umberger. A player 20 or so years ago is somehow relevant to this situation how? When there was no cap and a vastly different cba.

Anyway time to go outside.

You’ve perfectly outlined why I didn’t mention those and the slog it can be to listen to him sometimes.

Also, Umberger was under a different GM and ownership. He’s not relevant at all.

Interesting comment from Sat on Malhotra, here. I don't think he'd just toss that out there if it wasn't something that was being felt or communicated internally.

Satiar is a fool and a piss poor analyst of the sport.

Why would Manny, who married a BC girl and came back here for a reason, just use the Canucks as leverage? Tgey will interview him once Abby is done.

Brian Burke was correct. The media in this town is a bunch of maggots. Every one of them sucks. Tsylor is the only one with a soul and a spine. Maybe Farthand.

Yep I responded to that tweet similarly above. Malhotra isn't this summer's hot candidate for an NHL head coaching job. Malhotra is most likely under contract for another year and other teams need permission to speak with Malhotra. Malhotra's wife is from BC and obviously prefers Vancouver. Their son Caleb spurned the OHL to play for the Chilliwack Chiefs this year. There is likely no other job for a Canadian team. Unless another team such as Seattle offers more money and term or the Canucks, I can't see Malhotra not taking the Canucks job if offered.

Preference for Canucks coaching next season in order to
Mitch Love
Manny Malholtra
Jay Woodcroft
Jeff Halpren
Marco Sturm

I think if it's known that Sturm/Malhotra are on the shortlist, it means they're not going to get hired. JR probably has his guy. If they don't make a decision quickly then they're targeting a coach that's still currently in the playoffs.

I would expect there to be 1-2 veteran guys on their list as well. Laviolette and Woodcroft would be my wild guesses based off nothing.

Shortlist implies they're among the most likely candidates to get the job. Malhotra is still coaching currently, even if he was the number one choice they wouldn't announce it until Abbotsford's playoff run was over.

Sturm and Malhotra

Not judging
Just noting these guys would cost franking nothing to sign

And Aquilini is on record saying the money should be kept on the ice and doesn’t believe in paying coaches big.

they just offered tocchet around 4m, so i don’t think money will be a constraint on hiring a coach.

I can definitely be wrong but I would be surprised if Sturm or Malhotra are hired. Although, I’m doing some research on Sturm and didn’t realized he coached Germany to a silver medal in 2018 purely on structure.

That was because Tocchet is the apple of their eye. No way ownership authorizes spending big for some first-timer or low-profile option.
well the first-timer or low-profile option wouldn’t be able to command a big salary in the first place. If a high profile coach like Jon Cooper or Jared Bednar was let go, I don’t see money being an issue in hiring them, if it’s who management had their sights on.

I’d much rather they go for a lower cost option in Malhotra/Sturm over Laviolette or Woodcroft.

Canucks’ Coaching Search
  • Canucks did a whole bunch of interviews last week
  • Malhotra’s name is out there
  • Believe’s interest in Marco Sturm is legitimate
  • This week, the Canucks will have a short list of 3 or 4 candidates; thinks Sturm and Malhotra will be on that list
Rick Tocchet
  • Doesn’t have a great feel for where he will end up
  • Was on Anaheim’s radar but don’t think those talks went far
  • Seattle was very interested but not convinced that is where Tocchet wants to go
  • He turned down 4m(ish) from the Canucks and doesn’t see the Bruins offering more than the Canucks did
  • Has always believed that he was high on Philadelphia’s list but have heard that maybe that’s not necessarily true; people have pushed back on Tocchet going there in the last few days
  • There are people that are convinced he’s going to just be on TNT next season
Coaching Quality
  • Peter Laviolette and Gerard Gallant both want to prove that what happened with the Rangers, to both of them, was not about them as coaches
  • DJ Smith and Greg Cronin are interested in showing that they learned a lot from their first head coaching jobs
  • Only a matter of time until Jeff Halpern gets a chance to be a head coach
  • Comes down to when teams are willing to take a chance on a new coach
  • Has been told that Mitch Love has a strong chance to end up a head coach somewhere for next season
Marco Sturm
  • Is a pretty ambitious guy; has been sending signals for a couple of years that he would like to be a NHL head coach
  • Is also on Boston’s radar
  • Has been an NHL assistant before and really wanted to run a bench to show he could do it
  • Would want to coach the Canucks; wants to prove that he can be the kind of coach that they need

Aqua will put the prospective coaches all in the room. He will start his offer at $500k and every second it will increase the offer by $10k. Which coach will feel the others will break and go for the buzzer and try to beat them there. The first one to crack and slam the buzzer wins the coaching job.

Let the Aquasquidbeast Games begin!

I’m fine with Manny or Sturm.

I don’t want some retread over the hill coach.

Just hope that whomever they hire, can have a significant impact on the offense and specifically EP.

Pretty much where i’m at. Hire the smartest, most forward thinking coach who’s not looking to stifle offensive creativity.

Ideally it would be someone who would be willing to work with Foote, so we can keep him on the staff to continue to work with the defense.
