Who should the Canucks take at third?

I was excited for Stenberg falling but after today my dreams look to be crushed, now what’s left are question marks all over the place and it honestly sucks.

Reid and the MAGA, American factor who plays Defence and probably the position we are the most set going forward.

Malhotra being the Coaches son and the drama around that scenario and all the media attention around that.

Verhoeff who slipped the 2nd half and has questions with his IQ and Skating.

Carels who is probably more slated to go 5 or 6th overall who also is a LHD where we already have Buium.

We are going to get a good player regardless but the disappointment seems at this point to be inevitable and watching players like Byram go for 4th and 45th overall picks when we are sitting on guys like Hronek is very deflating, instead we announce RBC will be on our home jerseys this year.
Vans guys have nmc. With just DeBrusk having asked out. Kyrou and Brady had trade protection and asked out. Would expect byram and chi to sign new deal once July hits as chi would need to know they can extend him before finalizing the deal.

These all seem like champagne problems. I think the media attention surrounding Caleb will eventually blow over, and the MAGA/America stuff with Reid is (as with most political takes) overblown. And boasting a top four with two stud left-handers (if they draft Carels) isn't exactly something to get bent out of shape about.

The Canucks are going to walk away with a terrific prospect. Everything else is noise. This team is going to be awful for a while, and we'll be in a position to draft a potential #1C in next year's stacked draft, with Joseph, Privalov, Meyers, Sundstrom, and others potentially available.

I’m leaning Malhotra after all these Americans asking out and the entitlement surrounding them, Carels 2nd and Verhoeff 3rd but I’ll be happy with any 3 of them because they are Canadian and will play for the crest and not the name on the back. All 3 play premier positions and with some size and the potential for some snarl.

If McKenna-Stenberg to go 1-2, which does look very probable...

I'd want Carson Carels. I just don't see any reason to overlook the well-rounded, obvious seeming choice right in your own relative backyard. Safe prospect with substantial upside. At a position we frankly do still probably need more than just Zeev and Willander and hoping some of the other guys really pan out.

That said, i could make myself okay with Alberts Smits, or Chase Reid, and understand that as they probably have the slightly more aggressive, dynamic "offensive upside", if that's what they're valuing most. Have some reservations with both. Smits consistency, Reid filling out his two way game and the flight of USA players with his generally reported inclinations.

Heck, i might even hold my tongue if it were Malte Gustafsson...he's also got a lot of big upside and if there's any branch of this scouting staff to give some leeway to, it would be on a Swede.

I just really don't see a Forward who is worth it at 3. Bjorck is a tiny guy with mediocre skating who is going to likely end up an NHL winger.

The Malhotra thing, i could see turning into a bit of a sideshow in this market...but coaches of rebuilding teams have short shelf life so it's probably not that big of an issue. I'm more worried that it's about trying to "make a Center happen" when it's just not there. I just don't really like him nearly a #3 Amount as a prospect.

Reminds me of 2018 where teams were trying to make Kotkaniemi and Barrett Hayton a thing. Instead of just taking a Quin Hughes/Noah Dobson/Evan Bouchard, where the strength of the draft was pretty clearly defencemen.

after the fever dream that was last night, what are the odds Vancouver doesn't take Malhotra at 3? I think the Sabres are pretty high on Bjorck. I know I am.

With how things are shaking out, we should probably just take Carels or Reid with 3OA. They're safe bets to pan out as top 4 dmen and call it a day.

See what we can get forward-wise with the late 1st and whatever shakes out with the JDB trade that better happen (looking at you, RJ!). If we manage to get say, 25OA from Ottawa for JDB, Mathis Preston seems like a good homerun swing for so early in our rebuild.

The more i think about it...with all the craziness that's gone down, i really could get on board with a "trade down" if the Flames are genuinely looking to move up. These sort of top-10 pick trades almost never actually happen...but right now, they're happening.

If they're trying to jump up...it's hard to imagine it'd be for one of the RHD, especially Reid with Parekh and Nemec now. Or really even a Defenceman at all. Feels like it'd be for a Forward. Bjorck or Malhotra. Either one of them, i'd be fine with them taking. It'd leave the Canucks to grab from whatever is left after Buffalo and Rangers grab a guy...between Carels/Smits/Reid (and either team could easily take the other Forward) and i'd be fine with any of the three at 6. That's basically what i'd be looking at 3 anyway.

Ideally, use those extra picks from Calgary to jump up so we're looking at a legit guy like Command/Suvanto/Cullen/Dagenais/etc. by bumping up that Minnesota pick. Rather than just picking over scraps.

Still think there's hope to get Stenberg. Sharks could very well trade the pick for Knies and the Leafs probably take Reid or maybe even Malhotra after McKenna. Sharks might still take Reid and go for size with the #9 pick like Belchetz. I have a feeling the Sabres might be moving their pick as well for a goaltender.

Are the Leafs rebuilding? Trading Knies for 2OA seems like a rebuilding move, no?

Sabres are not moving 4OA for a goaltender.

They owe 27 and 28 firsts that are not protected to PHI/Bos. So, not sure taking someone off the roster is going to help them make the PO?
They still have a veteran heavy club though. Are they thinking quick retool? IMO they are going to get stuck in no man’s land.

Reid isn't in the US olympic team's group chat. It's all good!
