Who should the Canucks take at third?

Who should the Canucks select at third?

Have to take Reid here. Punish the Sharks if they take Stenberg and give them a nice "what if" possibly.

Reminds me a lot of the Red Wings taking Zadina over Hughes and then obviously regretting it later on. Taking the skilled European winger over the potentially elite defenseman. I think Stenberg is quite a lot better than Zadina ever was, though.

But zadina was a great choice at 6 at the time. He was right up there with svechnikov the entire time.

Zadina had terrible character issues as well. He thought he was the shit. I remember he was like I'm gonna fill the nets of all the teams that passed on me. Like chill bro you went 6th not 26.

Thank God Detroit made this “great choice” but most thought Detroit would pick Hughes due to the coach and Hughes’ WC + University of Michigan connections until Zadina fell in the draft.

It's real tough honestly.
By extremely short margins.

Carels
Malhotra
Reid

Carels drafted opens up a Marcus Trade, and we have a D core of Zeev, Carels, willander and "Hronek" for the time being.

But i am fine with the other options also

Shit, I don't remember that, usually I remember stuff like that. That's amazing, what a plug he turned out to be

Reid wont be there at 3. Hes the perfect fit in SJS. He will produce as much as Stenberg as a D on that stacked forward group.

I am not sure if I would describe that as character issues but regardless he said that after the draft. I don’t recall character issues being the reason why he fell. I think it had more to do with him not having anything else other than his shot and there were concerns about his shot selection. I think there is a trend where players like Zadina get rated very high but tend to fall in the draft.

In true Canucks fashion, it'll likely be the 4th pick that flourishes in a group of prospects that don't really have much separation. Either one of Reid or Malhotra seems fine though

We're going to be rebuilding for a while yet, no need to rush drafting a centre now when there are higher end D prospects available at 3.

Give me one of Carels, Reid or Verhoeff.

Buium, Willander and one of those guys is a very solid base for our future D core, with two guys that could be top 20 in the league D.

Hronek can mentor
Yes but you mentioned that drafting Carels opens up a Marcus trade and I am wondering what your thoughts are on the timeline. Are you saying that we should wait until a Dman like Carels arrive to the NHL before trading him or simply having a prospect in the pipeline allows him to trade Marcus?
Reported by elite prospects. Carels is doing 2 years in college.
I don’t think this is firm but in reality 2 years in college makes sense.

When are you expecting Carels to make it to the NHL full time and would you want Marcus around to help mentor him?
He's heading to NCAA for 26/27. See how he fares down there first.

Looking back at the top 3 D of the past few drafts:
2025 - Schaefer played after the draft. I think Mrtka ends up in the A with the new rules to start. Jackson Smith is returning to PSU.
2024 - Levshunov - late Bday. Went to the A post draft. Played on Chicago last season. Yakemchuck, late Bday as well. Back to the WHL and spent virtually all of last season in the A. Parekh, returned to OHL after the draft. Played only 37 games with CAL last season and 4 in the A. Guess he got hurt.
2023 - Reinbacher - hurt, so delayed. Simashev KHL the 2 years following draft. 2/3 in A and 1/3 in NHL last year. Willander, 2 years in NCAA and NHL last year.
2022 - Nemec, Jiricek, Kochinski (none have developed as planned. Nemec right to the A, then NHL the following year, then split in year 3 post draft. Jiricek, AHL, then NHL/AHL split then trade to Minny and mostly in the A last year.) Korchinski, CHL, then NHL, then AHL, AHL)
2021 - Power, late bday, then back to NCAA, then NHL. Hughes, NCAA for 2 years, then NHL. Clarke, OHL, AHL, then NHL.

27/28 really depends on how he fares. Could either return to NCAA or go to the AHL is the most realistic expectation.

I agree that Van shouldn't be limiting their options to just F. Take who they think will be the best player in a few years. If it is D, so be it. They need that too when you consider that they won't be returning to PO until 2030 and by then how old are Hronek/MPete? And will either be on the roster by then?

Worst thing they could do is overthink, just do BPA regardless of position.
