Sounds to me like a worthy Kopitar successor if he can develop his 200-ft game. So much about him just reminds me of a younger, faster Kopitar. Byfield couldn't have a better mentor over the next few seasons, imo. I'm super psyched about Byfield at #2OA. Winning this pick at the lottery was an absolutely huge development for the Kings.

I think your a bit too negative here with the outlook. It's been quite a long time since we've had very much talent in the system, so it's understandable. Byfield (if we draft him), Vilardi, Turcotte and likely Kaliyev all should be impact players IMO. They are so much more talented than what we have seen for the last 10 years come into the system. Just watching Vilardi come start at the AHL level when he joined the Reign, from the very first game, you could see what we have been missing all these years. Other than conditioning, it looked like he never skipped a beat despite missing a season and a half. Yes, all of the players will have some things to overcome (Kaliyev and Vilardi with their skating and consistent effort on both sides of the puck, Turcotte with his injury history, Byfield with the maturity of his game and structure). I'm also very high on Bjornfot after watching him break into the AHL at the ripe age of 18. I could see why Doughty was raving about him. No one has come close (outside of Anderson who was two years older than Bjornfot, and IMO Bjornfot was better than Mikey last year at the AHL level) to looking as good as Tobias did as a defense rookie, especially as an 18 year old. He's got more offensive upside to go too. He's going to be a top 4 defender for a long-time in the NHL, you can bookmark this post.

I think that Scouching video makes a great point and it's that we're somehow always looking for players to be 'flawless' but that's not only rare, it's practically nonexistent. Even Crosby hit the NHL and was working on his faceoffs and backhand shots.

Byfield is the one top-5 prospect I've seen in my recollection at all that I've seen people hammer home his negatives so overtly. I said in the prospect thread that I'd wonder what his perception would be if Lafreniere weren't in this draft to make everyone look bad by just being a great all-around player in a Canadian league. I suspect he'd be getting his tired pumped a lot more instead of getting weird ass criticisms like "yeah but he scores on the rush a lot" and "yeah but when was the last time anyone 6'6" was a great player" and "yeah his hockey IQ sucks" while watching him thread a needle through 5 opposing players while rounding the offensive zone at high speed, checkers in pursuit.

The Scouching video is great. Number one, highlighting the target player it becomes even more obvious how ridiculously well he moves on the ice. The fact that he's a giant and moves like that and changes direction like that is crazy. It's what a lot of us have been saying all along as to why we would like the Kings to draft him. That combination of skill, speed and size is very rare. Number two, it was interesting that he actually does not shoot as much as I thought he did. Byfield may have a little more Kopitar in him than I realized :sarcasm:.

BYFIELD <----> MALKIN
Now....
BYFIELD <----> KOPISTAR

If all four of Byfield, Vilardi, Turcotte, and Kaliyev reach their ceilings, we will win multiple Cups with that core.

Sure, it could happen, but going off pure statistics at least one of those players will not reach their ceiling.

good call
He is one of one the great short term turn around a franchise coaches in NHL history
Without Terry Murray immediately following Crawford I don't think the Kings are ready to have Daryl Sutter come in and crack the whip.

Murray was a great teacher and extremely patient with the young guys. Then when he was fired I am sure those same guys knew it was on them.

Yeah, i don't understand why it's so early in the day since it's no longer Saturday. Mid-week 8:30am PST for rounds 2-7. WTW?!?!
Whatever, it makes it easier for me to drink big the night before celebrating our #2OA pick (& potentially a 2nd 1st rounder with a trade up).....and then day off nursing the well deserved hangover watching all ours picks the next morning from bed. I'd prefer it to be Friday/Saturday like normal but improvise i guess with a day off Wednesday.

I really want to see Byfield in one of these. Ship him a #55 sweater so he can put it on during the virtual draft.

On the topic of a virtual draft, I wonder if anything changes concerning draft day trades. We’re going to miss out on the excitement of the draft floor hubbub.

I'm not saying he's wrong, i'm just saying his argument is wrong, Yannetti (and the staff) will be taking who they believe to be the better player, not the player with more tools, they certainly won't be taking
Stützle if they don't think he has a legit shot to stick at Center.

Who is this guy, and why do we care?

like that he rationalizes his picks, obviously has read a ton of scouting reports, didn't have any off the wall picks. Thought he did a good job.

Technically, Imama Bokonji is sporting 55 but we have yet to see if he will be qualified.
