I can't fall asleep, so I figured a little bit of bright lights may tire me out and I can doze off.
So I hopped on CapFriendly for a few minutes and came up with 2 scenarios I would like to see.
The defence just isn’t good enough. It’s not that it’s horrible, but you’re trying to win the cup.
running it back with most of the team in tact is going to get you similar results. i will say the leafs are screwed. That’s the cold hard truth. Maybe a coaching change can yield different results, it worked for stlouis
Your cap hits for O'Reilly, Acciari, Luke Schenn, Samsonov aren't realistic. They'll all get more money than that and you won't be able to afford Bertuzzi.
Also surprising that you think Dubas or his replacement will keep all 3 of Matthews Marner Nylander. One of those three guys is going to be traded, at least one, or else the media and the fans are going to riot. If for SOME reason we kept all 3 of those guys, they would probably do something with the defense, I think? Trade Brodie and bring in somebody else right handed? I don't know. I can't see them doing almost literally nothing.
It doesn’t really matter until Shanahan is changed. If his build philosophy is true.
He probably wants a team that is built as if they are playing in a world championship tournament and not 4 rounds of the NHL playoffs.
Yep, I agree. Shanahan needs to be jettisoned !!! He has been a sham of a president, and a shill for the NHL.
Our Leafs HAVE NOT EVER played hockey the same way he played hockey in his day. Hockey is a rough and tumble sport, especially in the playoffs. However, under his leadership, our Leafs have been mainly cream puffs and scared little p***yes !!!
My main beef with him is that he doesn't ever come out in the media to question how the NHL screws our Leafs. Our Leafs are suspended for causing another player a hang nail, all the while other teams can injure our Leafs with no consequences !!! That charge/boarding that Gudas did on Kamph was just as bad or worse than what Bunting, Hyman, or Kadri got suspended for.
Another thing is that he has never been a permanent resident of Toronto. His family still resides in NJ. So, that indicates to me that his commitment to Toronto has a limit. He is ready to return to a job at the NHL league office in NY at a moments notice !!!
I might be totally wrong on some points, however this is JMHO.
Is there as bad a defenceman making $9M that someone would trade for him? I don't think we want to make that trade anyway - a bad forward is easier to hide than a bad defenceman.

The Maple Leafs were once again struck by an early playoff exit and they'll surely be looking to make major changes to their line-up since this recipe clearly isn't
Unfortuntely the one "core four" who will pay the price is the only one who shows up in the playoffs. I've been hard on Willy in the past but in the Habs & Panthers series he was the only one who showed up. He's the last piece I would consider moving.
If we get rid of any of the core 4, I’m more concerned with what we’d get back?
Two things I’m curious about:
A) What position do we focus on (top 2 dman or top line forward)?
B) What type of player are we bringing in? Another finesse player with no jam in his game, or a skilled player that brings that physicality and battle ready game? The latter will likely have less skill, but will have those “intangibles” that we’re missing.

I have posted in multiple threads, I think you have 2 choices: Keep the entire core together, or trade 2 of the 4 of them (Tavares wont' be gone, so its 2 of the remaining 3). I'd keep Nylander.
I think of this team with Nylander and Tavares and then what you might get back for Matthews and Marner, and I see a possibility of something I like.
If I'm another team in the division/easter conference and I think of 2 options: Basically the current team with the current core (switching out the bottom of the roster), OR...Nylander and Tavares joined by 2-4 legit other NHL players (at least 2 star level players, if not quite the level of Marner and Matthews), plus more cap space to fill in the current roster, plus picks that can be traded away for even MORE quality help......well if I'm an easter conference competitor the 2nd option might scare me a bit more than the first.
Before everyone dismisses what you could get back for Marner or Matthews, remember that Marner should be worth close to as much as what Eichel got in a return, and Matthews should be worth MORE. What did Eichel get back? A quality, young, 30+ goal scorer who is a great forchecker and a energy guy (Tuch), a mid first round pick, a player who was a mid first round pick the year before, a 2nd round pick, and almost $5m in cap savings.
What if you could get that for Marner, and a bit more for Matthews, and one of the players you get back is not a 30 goal scoring winger but instead a top pair D-man? Its is not out of the question that you can/will get a BETTER return than that for each of them.

There is validity to perhaps just changing the coaching staff. I know this core has had a couple of different coaches, but perhaps a new one at this time in their careers could be the difference maker?
One that is not so much of a player’s coach, but one that is more firm, but fair. That doesn’t mean he’s a guy that likes to play head games with his players either.
Just someone who is going to hold these guys accountable! Look at what a guy like Brind’Amour did with the Canes? He doesn’t tolerate a lack of commitment and effort from his players.
Perhaps a coach like that could get these guys over the hump???
He had 1 goal, 1 primary assist at even strengh...his goal gm 5 vs florida was his only one at even strenght and it was a weak goal bobrovsky allowed... he avoiding every hit he can, we never saw defensive commitment, he was on the ice for team high 13 time for goal against.
Sorry Nylander was probably the WORST leafs player at even strenght ... but yes he was fine in pp but what do you want ? A pp specialist or a 5v5 player?
