Brian Smith would be a good choice. Not the one who was shot and killed while driving his car, the one who is Manager of Broadcasting and Media Services for the Philadelphia Flyers.
He was the guy who called the Rangers /Flyers Rookie game this year.
Good voice and was well prepared.
He did both play by play and color.

Kenny is TNT's #1 play by play guy but also the Rangers primary radio guy. When Sam retires Kenny will do both just like Doc did for all those years with FOX/ABC/NBC and the Devils.

Another example is Mike Breen. He does Knicks and ESPN.
I’d pay good money to hear Mike Breen and Clyde call a Rangers game.

MB: “Fox……makes a nice move along the wall……..walks to the middle….BANG! Adam Fox from downtown! Rangers take the lead!”

WF: “Watch Fox Mike, makes the nice move and sees the middle is available and just takes it folks. Spinning and winning before releasing the shot for the goal….”

Definitely Kenny. Not the biggest fan but he’s definitely good at his job. Really because you want your home announcer to have that personality, but maybe he will throughout the years he shows his personality and has chemistry with whoever it is. I can see we all wind up loving Kenny years after the gets the full gig.

I feel like Kenny is ok, but I dunno, Sam has a classic voice. They need someone else like him. Voice and excitement level is more important than technical proficiency as evidenced by the fact that Sam said Zibanejad made a glove save the other night.

Yeah, and this is 100% what I feel about Joe too. Since Sam is colorful, they probably picked Joe to match him up.

Answer: anybodys guess.
My opinion (HOT TAKE) as much as I love Sam, and to a lesser extent Joe........ It can't be soon enough. It totally irritates me to hear Joe referring to Sam, (by name) and vice versa. Sorry if that offends anyone.

Post Rosen

Mumble Rap? Nah...Mumble Play-by-play

Would have to think it would be Kenny Albert.

It's interesting the Yankee job will have to be filled sooner rather than later too. Hope that goes to Ricky Ricardo, the spanish language broadcaster. That dude's a riot and was great filling in for Jawn a few times this season.

Is Kenny really the primary guy? Honestly feels like Don does more games. To me, he's the Rangers radio voice.

Just not a Kenny fan at all

Yes. And keep in mind Kenny is TNT's lead PXP but they only get 3 of the next 7 finals. So if the Rangers are fortunate to make the playoffs these next 7 years he'll do a lot of the games. And I doubt Sam can go another 7 years.

There are a few things that make good announcers:

1. A distinct voice (honestly, this is probably the single most important attribute outside of #2)
2. Pace. Know when to raise your voice, when to be excited, know when to chitchat
3. Ability to accurately identify situations rapidly and relay them. It gets easier down the line since announcers often rehash the same sentences thousands of times.
Gary Thorne and Doc.

Rangers should hire Kevin Burkhardt who was previously with the Mets and does NFL. Then the Rangers would have the original, and the Islanders would have Brendan Burke who sounds exactly like him.

Now that Steve Sommers is a free agent, having him do Rangers game would be great, however....issue with Rose, Thorne, Albert, Sommers is those guys are all 53+ so it will probably be a youngster. Sam was in his mid-30s when he joined MSG Networks so realistically it's time to pass it on to the younger generation.

Callahan or Rupp as color commentator would be cool. Former Ranger. Cally is really good as an analyst.

I will literally take anyone other than Sam.
And this is why nobody likes you, respects you, or listens to your silly podcasts. You’re not even a has been. You’re a never was.

Father Time will eventually claim all of us. It was a privilege listening to John Amirante, a homegrown New Yorker sing our beloved national anthem for over 3 decades. Even towards the end of his years, voice crackling and all. And not just for the Rangers. But also for the Mets and Yankees. If he were still alive and willing, I’d rather listen to him sing our anthem despite his flaws. Beautiful voice. Beautiful person. And the epitome of a real New Yorker.

Rosen’s best years are behind him. This dudes very old. He was born shortly after WW2. He wasn’t born in NY but he’s 100% a New Yorker.

I became a fan in 88-89 as a nine year old. Sam Rosen is the voice of Rangers hockey. I don’t care how many names he gets mixed up, or how often he gets plays confused. I’ve met Sam on numerous occasions and he’s an absolute class act and a joy to talk hockey with.

It’s going to be a very sad day for a lot of us when he can no longer call games. Embrace these last few years of him. Take it all in and appreciate one of the very best in the business towards the end of a hall of fame career, you potato.

“Who comes after Sam”? I think Phil Kessel is coming after EVERYONE.

Watch out!
