WHL expansion Penticton (25-26), Chilliwack (26-27)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Word not found: “Chiefs”. So the Vees just moving up, but what’s happening to the BCHL Chiefs?

Also on the city of Penticton page, on their announcement it had the Oak View Group listed. They have built and operate several arenas in north america

No, the players just all move to the WHL. Since it's independent, there's no player agreements on movement between leagues.

Not how it is going to work. The vast majority of their BCHL Vees current players are nowhere near good enough for the WHL team. That is why they are getting that expansion draft on May 7. Yes, there is no agreements on player movements. But "the players just all move to the WHL" is *not* what's going to happen. All of the players on BCHL rosters in October 2024 who were good enough to play major junior found their way onto major junior rosters by December 2024.

The Vees ownership still controls the rights to the BCHL franchise and are actively looking to sell/relocate it. Those players are still tied to that franchise and will end up going wherever it goes.

The Vees have a bunch of players who are from Ontario, Quebec and the eastern USA, so out of their region. Plus guys from europe who havent been through the import draft and guys who've been drafted by other whl teams.
I think they have to just release all their players, and start over with whoever they get in an expansion draft + list/free agent players.

Between them, and the crappy Rockets roster hosting the Mem cup, this is shaping up to be the most interesting whl off-season in a very very long time.

The wording is important here, as they awarded a Pentiction Vees franchise, but are also keeping the BCHL franchise and looking to sell them off.

As for the Chiefs, they are not connected to the WHL bid. They are looking for a potential owner. There was some scuttlebutt locally about Aquilini looking into the WHL so that may be a potential owner.

I just saw an article saying the current Vees will be relocated. I'm curious which community in BC can support a BCHL team. It seems like every town has a KIJHL, PJHL or VIJHL team. Could one of them move up by merging with the Vees?

Not many. Lake Country would an obvious choice if they're giving an eye to costs and logistics.

Otherwise, seems the only viable options are on the Island/lower mainland.

As I said on another thread (there's about four of them discussing this) there are a few places where it's theoretically feasible to bump out a KIJHL or VIJHL team. The north Island (Comox or Campbell River) or perhaps one of Williams Lake or Quesnel to give a travel buddy to Prince George, or possibly Nelson or Kimberley to add to the Kootenay portion of the BCHL. None of them have rinks that are really great.

BC is so over-saturated with junior hockey right now. Something has to give.

There is a dispersal draft on May 7. I really need the details so I can break down our protection list
This article has some good tidbits on the expansion draft (assuming that's what you meant). Teams can only lose one player. Each team can protect 16 players. No player under 17 can be drafted (which means, I think, that the Royals would hold onto Eli McKamey's rights.

It's true there are a lot of "Junior A" level teams out there. I think the KIJHL just split into two tiers recently.

Merritt might be enticed back into the BCHL but their issues are still the same as when they left.

I thought I heard it's 16 players if you only choose 2 20 year olds, but 14 if your choose 3.
