Value of: Which teams are willing to give $13M, 7 years to Mitch Marner this summer?

It's 100 percent going to be the pens, like someone said, "for better or worse"

They will have something like 20 mil coming off the books at the end of the year, that plus an increase in the cap means they can easily afford 13 mil if they go with young hungry guys in the bottom sid.

dubas thinking he can give sid one more chance by adding a high end winger to the sid, rackell, rust, Geno, bunting group means he will go out and over spend on his boy.

But dubas won't fix the defense, goaltending, or coaching and they will end up like 2 games outside of a playoff spot again.

Gotta laugh at fans cringing over their team unable to sniff the playoff adding Marner as if he is so terrible when he would be their best player by far. They only don't like him because he is a Leaf. If he did leave, suddenly Marner would get respect on HFboards that is for sure.

I think Caps should seriously go after him.

1. Cap space:
They have Backstrom, Oshie, Carlson and Ovie all off the books after next season with probably only Carlson a likely candidate to re-sign. So the Caps will have plenty of cap space moving forward.

2. Age
He also fits the age profile of the next core of players signed long term. Dubois, Strome, Roy, Wilson, Sandin, Protas are all between 23-30 and signed for at least 4 more years (and hopefully Chychrun soon as well).

3. Role/Need
I think he’d be perfect with Strome on the 1st line to pick up the torch as the main producer after Ovie retires. He’d also help Ovie chase the record next year.

4. Ambition
He’d be joining a team trending upwards with a lot of pieces in place to truly contend, which he probably wouldn’t by looking at most other teams with the cap space required. Plus the Caps have a pretty decent prospect pool which would help them compete for quite some time with Leonard, Mirosnichenko, Cristall and Hutson Jr to name a few.

5. Familiarity
HC Carberry was an assistant coach in Toronto before joining the Caps next year so they know each other. He has also represented Canada with both Strome and Dubois.

He’s had some embarrassing moments shying from the mixer in the playoffs, but I think if you pluck him out of TOR he immediately becomes an adequate playoff performer. Whether it would be coincidence or being a product of a new environment, one never knows

I will start with the Rangers, who else?
JJ Abrams is going to replace Drury as GM, trade Panarin and Kreider, and give Marner the same contract as Panarin but plus the difference. He's going to then sign Trent Frederic to a seven year deal with a NTC, hire some "whip smart" coach, and MSG will have lens flare.

not unlikely that no team will give him $13M, or $12 or even $11

he's a wing, and not one of the top 5 in the league
(yes he's productive and i am not demeaning him)

he'll get paid well,
but IMHO I sure hope it's not NYR,
who already have 3 W's consuming > $25M of next year's Cap

I'm not saying Rangers should, but elite players cost money. Also, you have to make playoff to advance. Unless you have drafted players, it's hard to find UFA, elite talent that won't cost.
Elite players alone don't win you cups. Players outperforming their cap hits win you cups. Players like Panarin and Marner have never done that on their 8 figure cap hits.

Also, 50% of the league makes playoffs. If a team is so terrible that Marner is the difference between being #16 or #17, you've got a lot more problems to worry about before playoff success

Gotta laugh at fans cringing over their team unable to sniff the playoff adding Marner as if he is so terrible when he would be their best player by far. They only don't like him because he is a Leaf. If he did leave, suddenly Marner would get respect on HFboards that is for sure.
Marner the playoff ghost would be laughed at anywhere. Leafs victim complex strikes again

Whatever you say. If he leaves promise by the end of next season he is getting his props on the mains. Also wasn't the main point of my comment.

San Jose could, and a top flight RW is a definite need, however, if we pay Marner $13M, we'd have to Celebrini $15M and that blows the cap up. Ideally summer of 2026 we extend him, that becomes our player ACV cap and then we can go after Connor or Tuch.

He's got 50 points in 57 playoff games. Not quite as good as his regular season stats, but hardly a bust. I think any of the big cap space teams could do a lot worse than signing Marner.
He has 6 goals in his last 37 playoff games and 11 in 57 games. Not exactly screaming success.

yea definitely Dubas that's not even a question haha
Given Pittsburgh doesn't have much in the way of prospects and their stars are like 40 it may be what they need to do tbh.

Although If the difference is 13m to Pittsburgh or 12m to Anaheim I think marner would go Anaheim.

People are really basing his lack of playoff ability on a single series from last season's playoffs. He had 14 points in 11 games the year before.

Nylander, Matthews, and Tavares were also below a ppg last playoffs, with Tavares having 2 points in seven games. Matthews was injured and Boston shut the whole team down offensively. Marner became the scapegoat.
It's more than just one series and has been talked about for a while now. Sure he had 14 pts in 11 games but look at the game logs, 11 pts in the first five games then 3 in the last six. He's been under a PPG in five of eight playoffs which isn't that good for a player of his caliber
