Montreal…

Mediocrity in the next 5-6 years is what Montreal inspires to be….

I bet they can improve enough to achieve it and accomplish their goals.

Has anyone said the Wild? Guerin has a fetish for overpaying bottom 6 grinders to the point where I'm surprised he hasn't traded Rossi for Miles Wood.

They've been about as bad as Toronto in terms of playoff failures but nobody talks about them

I don't mean bottom of the table teams, I mean the bubble teams with no direction that aren't bad enough to be lottery teams. The mid of the mid.

The Capitals are looking well primed to be stuck. $15m/y on Tom Wilson and PLD
Capitals, penguins come to mind.

Caps are trying to prevent it by doing trades like Dubois or another mis 20s player who go a high contract where the team nie has better ELCd to pay who you might get them below market and take yjr risk

Look at club drafting over the last 8+ yrs. That's also a key indicator

With a Mitch Marner extension seemingly inevitable, I think the Toronto Maple Leafs have lost their chance to get out from under the mess that Kyle Dubas created and unfortunately it's going to be like Groundhog Day in Leaf Nation.
Yeah, but they'll likely make the playoffs in the next 5 seasons.

Look at Florida's roster 5 years ago. And that was with an already 30 year old Bob. There's no non-lucky ass Tkachuk trade reason why Florida won this year. It's almost a completely different team from the day Bob signed. Which I imagine was a day when people said, OMG, why are you signing a 30 year old to a long term contract?!?!?!

75% of the league is destined to be mediocre in the next 5 years. Specifics? Can't even guess. There's going to be another Tkachuk type trade somewhere, but who knows when or who. If Tkachuk wants to stay in Calgary, you're not getting him for Huberdeau. If Huberdeau doesn't have a career year(at the perfect time), just his average one, and he's getting to 30, and a soon to be UFA, you're not getting a younger 1st line star player for him. That doesn't happen.

You'll get 5 real contenders, because they "truly believe in winning", and 3 teams that do total rebuilds(because top players wanted out). Everyone else is just selling some tickets because a hockey game is a thing to go to.

Cool.

But what does that have to do with anything? The question was what teams are bound for mediocrity, and the Leafs, who make the playoffs that sputter out in the first round year after year, are the very definition of a mediocre team, and their strategy of running back the identical core and changing the minor pieces around that core is a proven recipe for failure and once they lock up Marner on a long-term big bucks extension, they will cement that position for the new five years at least.

Well when you're not cynical you see teams who don't make the playoffs as being mediocre.

Tor are an above average team who is not good enough to go deep in the playoffs or win a cup.

A lot people are saying PIT, MIN, or WSH. I can see that. They could hover around 9th/10th in their conference for a while. They might slip further. I can't see TOR doing that any time soon.

I don’t know if bringing up the 4th best team in the regular season in the last 5 years makes a lot of sense in a thread about mediocre teams.

I don't think there's anything cynical at all about saying a team that has won one playoff series in 20 years is mediocre. In fact, I think it's kind of generous.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion.

When I talk about teams that are good, I'm referring to teams that are a legitimate threat to win the Stanley Cup.

The Maple Leafs haven't been anywhere close to to that for a long time and I think there odds are going to get worse moving forward (if they extend Marner) not better.

If Philly botches their rebuild and bets on the wrong players / doesn't acquire enough high end talent I could imagine them being stuck in mediocrity.

If Toronto is mediocre in your measure, then what is UTAH, CBJ, or BUF? CBJ have only won playoff series in their franchise history. 2 if you count the covid play in series.

It sucks that Toronto loses in the playoffs, but at least they get there.

Easy answer:

Winnipeg
Minnesota
Islanders
Toronto
Los Angeles

Nashville would have been in this group but has had a great offseason imo and worked themselves off this list

funny enough the team they beat in the covid play in was Toronto. But if your bar is be better than Columbus/Buffalo/Utah to be a good team then I think you need to raise the bar.

Fun fact: Columbus had a 50 win season in their history before Toronto did

Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, Vegas, Edmonton
Pittsburgh was in my Big 3 along with Boston and Florida, all older-ish teams with really bad pipelines.

Edmonton could be in 5 or 6 years I guess but those other 3 teams look like sooner drop offs.

The LA kings are the pinnacle of guaranteed “meh”, and it’s not changing any time soon.
