Austin Matthews has gotten himself the reputation that when the games is big and has real meaning, he disappears. Holding the regular season goal scoring lead and then becoming a ghost in the big game or games is not a reputation that any player wants to be known by and if Matthews doesn't get his stuff together and show up in the big games he will be forever known for choking in the big games.

They can take 8D to Milan. I don't see why Bouchard shouldn't be in that group, given the need for more offense.
Ya, fair, but still def not in my top 6

Yup, 0-7 now in winner take all games of any kind in his NHL career

So you’re saying he’s going to be Keith Tkachuk?

Clearly they can’t trust Matthews and should leave him off the Olympic team. They’ll have a better chance with Cole Caufield.

I think Marchand has shown that his days of playing best on best are over.

He and Stone both looked too slow out there.

💯 I would add Cirelli too. Not that he was slow, just not quite the calibre of ‘top players in the world.’

On USA, Werenski was great, but I didn’t realize just how good Brock Faber was until last night. He was very impressive.

Agreed and I think if Cooper's not coach, Cirelli's not there. Kinda the same for Toews, if he wasn't Cale's partner he isn't there and tbh there's no way either should be there next year regardless of the situation

Well at least Cole might actually score a goal, so long as no one accidentally steps on him and crushes him b4 that can happen

He was their best forward in the biggest game…. You can say he didn’t get it done, but disappears? What more do you expect of the guy, points on the game tying and go ahead goal, the most dangerous player for either team in OT.

Fox and Hughes were by far the worst players for team USA and are getting less flack than Matthews who was arguably their best.

I don't know about raised but these guys definitely stood out in a good way:

Bennett
Harley
Slavin
Faber
JEK

These guys did not:
Marchand
J. Hughes
Fox
EP40 (not surprising though)

Prior to the 4 Nations my view was to leave Bouchard off as well.

It's only from watching this that it's clear to me Canada need more offense and puck-moving.
Ya, but a 100% healthy and well conditioned Doughty and Makar would help alot there as neither were at their best. Besides, HC brass has shown an unwillingness in the past to bring guys that have any sort of questions about their defense, rightly or wrongly

Which is crazy because he was the best US player (maybe Slavin was) last night.

2 primary assists, driving play, great defensively, but a single play is going to haunt him because Fox chases a puck instead of rotating into position.

JT Miller- over 67 minutes of total ice time in the tournament which equaled to 0 points for him. He also apparently bitched at the Tkachuks for leaking the group chat convo about starting fights vs Canada.

Jack Hughes seems like a boy playing vs men

Adam Fox looked like he couldnt keep up skating wise.

EP40, looks injured and played terrible.

Sebastian Aho was meh.

I just liked how Miller ran around like a tough guy looking to fight, then proceeded to get his ass handed to him by Parayko.

Way to teach Parayko's fists a lesson with your face, JT. Go start another locker room argument with a teammate, you jackass.

I'll disagree with some ones here.

Marner, I see this tournament as a slight positive for him, he was invisible/bad in some games, but he got an OT winner and played great in the final game. I guess if you put 90% stock into the final game/one game, then his stock goes up, but I look at things holistically and as a whole he stayed the same for me. A very talented player that still has a lot to prove.

Matthews, I see this tournament as neutral for him, he didn't score but if he was playing hurt he still contributed and while a goal would be great still getting two assists, definitely do not see it as a negative.

Binnington, he played amazing in the final game and if that's all you care about, he was great. But his stock doesn't go up at all because great goalies need to sustain their play. Maybe he's the anti Helle, he can elevate his game when it matters most, but he's not gonna get you there. Whereas Helle can sustain excellent play but it can dip a bit-substantially at the most important times. Both are less than ideal, Binnington hasn't come close to replicating his rookie year hence the Blues doing nothing outside of that 50 game run and Helle has had some fantastic years but came apart when it mattered most.

Probably unpopular due to the last game where people will make 80% of their mind up, but it is what it is.

In Matthews defense, he would have absolutely had a goal tonight had Binnington not played out of his mind. I think Auston looked really dangerous tonight, had a pair of assists and multiple point blank chances. He just got goalied.
He played some great defense in the tourney as well, but that is hard to pull from a stat line so most posters are unaware.

thomas harley. he looked like he belongs there.

I had no idea who Thomas Harley was before this tournament. No joke. So I guess in my head his stock raised a lot

Bad on me, but legit had to look him up and see he has about 4 seasons. Guess I wasn't paying attention to Dallas much these last years.
