Florida Panthers. About to give up a top 10 pick they desperately need, the team isn't good enough and they are in no mans land. Lack the assets to address their D without creating another hole, can replace futures but at the expense of the present and making themselves worse, no futures to speak of atm to plug holes.

Boat anchor contract in goal and a coach and GM over their head who blew a promising team window to win 0 games in the 2nd round. Rest of these teams have a direction at least. HM Vancouver but at least they own their first

It's a 2 horse race between Vancouver and Chicago.

Vancouver. Since 2011 they've unraveled in every way possible. JT Miller seems to haunt this squad and their owner/GM combo is among the worst of all time.

Chicago. Awful for other reasons. Despite winning cups they are looked upon with disdain and disgust because of their treatment of a young player going through some pretty serious abuse. They are awful to this day for their deliberate tanking, maybe the most deliberate we've ever seen. Terrible organization, a true embarrassment to the league. I vote them.

Added them to the poll ya hockey virus

Vancouver are 26th in the league with internal issues, no prospect pool, and a ton of extremely bad contracts.

I don't think Chicago is that bad. They suck on purpose and already have some very good prospects. There is a clear direction there. Jones deal is the only bad contract, but he is still an ok Dman at least.

For me it's between San Jose & Philly. Two complete middle of the road teams that don't have strong prospect pools or young franchise cornerstones and couldn't decide which direction they wanted to go in.

San Jose has guys like Couture, Vlasic, and EK on expensive, long-term deals. No clue why they extended Hertl who is 30 and doesn't fit their window.

Meier is the only piece they can really flip into a valuable asset. I think they will be bad for a long time.

Why is Vancouver winning this so handedly? EP, Hughes, and Demko gives them a franchise cornerstone at all 3 key positions + they should get a really solid return for Horvat. Signing Miller and losing Horvat was def a mistake though.

Edit: Totally forgot about Chicago. They are in horrible shape, that's my pick.

This made me change my homer vote from Chicago to Vancouver.

I don’t even think Chicago is 2nd worst after thinking a bit more about it. Someone would have to convince me that a sexual assault and cover up 12 years ago has any effect now. I don’t see any young or old players refusing to come here so far and as time goes by it will matter even less. People just like to shit on them because they are jealous of the cups and already hated them anyway.

Nashville should make this list. Not even sure what the hell they are doing.

The obvious answer that should be unanimous is Arizona

After them, either Vancouver or Philadelphia IMO

Vancouver.

The damage done by Jim Benning simply doesn't get undone just because he got fired.

He did 7.5 years of damage. With an elite GM it would take at least half that time (~4 years) for him to fix everything and get the organization back into a good spot - if he had a plan from day one and executed it perfectly.

Since the Canucks didn't replace Benning with an elite GM, it could take them much longer to get back to square one.

People should remember that Benning didn't just do damage to the Canucks roster, he also gutted their management and fired a ton of competent staff, which takes quite some time to recoup.

I think Vancouver, if they blow it up, can have a very quick turnaround. They trade off some good pieces and suffer short-term (ish) pain, they could be set for the future. Think of a return on guys like Boeser, Horvat, Pettersson, Kuzmenko, etc. They're stuck with OEL and Miller but just ride those out.

Arizona comes down to the May vote for the new arena district. In the meantime, the team that is 8th in the league in payroll per Capfriendly and 26th in the league in the standings, with an oft-meddlesome owner who fired the last guy who tried a rebuild is my pick. Vancouver has a lot of problems right now and it just seems to be getting worse.

Their entire core is build around 21-27y players.
What a silly comment.

They’ll drop 15M of useless cap next summer and retool within the next 1-2 years.

Yeah they don’t have picks but they really don’t need to find franchise talent for a long time, they need depth players.
That’s what lot of the fans miss, Barkov is their best player and only 27y, Tkachuk 2nd best and he’s 25y

Flyers are a total mess and would get my vote.
San Jose will be at the bottom for a long time as well

Yeah this is what separates them from the rest, to me.

Their ownership is a mess, their management can't function cohesively until their ownership does, prospect pool is about as weak as it gets, especially considering they haven't even made the playoffs in 7 of the last 8 years, JT Miller's (the teams soon-to-be de facto "leader") contract is almost as bad as his effort level and attitude on the ice, Horvat wants out and will get out, Pettersson wants out and will probably get out, Boeser is probably gone.

They're gonna be forced to rebuild, which should be a good thing, especially if they can unload a bunch of cap, and in theory, selling off pieces like Horvat and Pettersson should give them some nice pieces to rebuild around, but if ownership doesn't accept that as the route they wanna go, it could still get even uglier before it begins to improve.

It's way "easier" to address lack of talent or a bad coach than it is to address an ownership group that can't get on the same page to save their lives.
