Pettersson, Tavares.

Hischier, Lindholm are more like #1B guys, but Hischier is making a case he's more than that.

Krejci is hard to assess. He was a #1B Center when he left the league, and he looked like he's picked up more or less where he left off.

Then there's a swath of guys who are more like #2A types. Who could potentially be a #1B if you have another guy to be #1A, or a pair of those sorta #2A/1B types with diversified skillsets.

Hintz, Larkin, Horvat, Couture, Thomas, Kuznetsov. They're all great players, but i think you're hard-pressed to be a "Contender" team if they're your best Center iceman. Even if they can produce vaguely #1C sort of numbers, i don't know that they're "The Guy" you want anchoring your entire offense.

I think Thomas can be a Krejci in his prime level guy on a contender.

Washington won a Cup with Kuznetsov as their 1C. Hell, he had a Conn Smythe worthy run and lead their team in scoring that playoff run.

If the argument is that he can't be the TOP guy and expect to be a true Cup contender, then I'd argue no one on the list fits that criteria because guys like Pettersson and Tavares aren't guys who've shown they can be the top player on a legitimate Cup contender, either.

JT is clearly a 1C, he's a ppg player and 1 of the best faceoff guys in the league. I would say EP, Lindholm, Larkin as well and Hischier has really impressed me lately

How is he not a number one centre?
You'd think a number one center would be near the top on PK Toi, SH faceoffs, Defensive zone faceoffs and a above 50% faceoff win %

Bo Horvat has him beat in everything except one stat. Id rather wait till next season when Horvats gone to say if Pettersson is a 1C. I'll eat my crow then.

Vancouver fans hasn't treated Horvat very well, they Always seem to bag on him. They are going to miss him terribly next year.

The most important thing would be to define "true" #1 center.

- top 10 center?
- top 32 center?
- top center on their team?
The answer you'll get will be something like "Only the purest of the true great generational peak 1Cs."

Why? A lot of number 1 centres don’t do any of that.

Also, it’s not just one stat. Pettersson is a far better possession player, and has a better xGf% and GF% at 5v5 this year. He’s also a better 5v5 and ES scorer in both goals and points. Just a much better player there. His zone starts are also negligible different than Horvat there, regardless of face off numbers. They both have played a similar amount on the PK this year (1,2 among forwards), and Pettersson has been more effective there, which is no surprise as Horvat is a terrible PKer and always has been. But he wins face offs, yay.

Then your definition on number one centers is different then mine. A 1 C should be good enough to be able to be played in all situations or score a literal buttload of goals or assists to offset that.

Larkin and Lindholm are definitely underrated.

I'll wait till the end of the season for Hintz.
I mean don’t get me wrong Tavares is also a 1C but Hintz also definitely is. 43 in 41 two seasons ago, 72 in 80 last season and 14 in 11 this season. People like to act like he’s just a passenger on that Pav/Robertson line but he’s really important on it too.

Yeah Hintz definitely looks good, Just want to see where he lands this season before really calling him anything. Is he what he was last season or perhaps somewhere in the middle between his earlier years and last season.
