I still think that the hockey rivalry is exciting - I would rather have any other nation, even Russia or Canada, win a best-on-best tournament than Sweden. But otherwise it's a stupid thing and mostly on the Finnish side as the "little brother". Luckily the younger generations are quite over it - Finland is just as modern Western society as Sweden which is by some distance the most similar country on earth to us (followed by Norway, Denmark and Iceland).
It's a shame Finns dislike Sweden so much. Been secretly hoping for a union again.

I will say that Canadian and American fans are the least likely to bring up historical wars as if they are somehow relevant to a hockey discussion.
Perhaps. But I've seen mentions of historical US - Canada conflicts on these boards. Something about the White House being burned and a failed incursion by US, or something along those lines.

Of course Americans won't bring up historical wars when they can choose one of their 50 ongoing wars and conflicts. :sarcasm:

Its a tie between Canada and Finland

Sounds like the next Olympic-final in Ching-chong in my ear.:thumbu:

Who cares about their/our supporter internet "hooligan"-lot?

We ain't talkin' Mile End Mob (West Ham United):) exactly ...

I don't think Finns dislike the Swedes at hockey at least I don't know anyone who does. It is just brotherly rivalry, that occurs. Same with Danes and Norwegians. Or Estonians towards Finns.
I do admit how ever that these ''lille bro''-comments are absolutely irritating because most Finns don't recocnise that relation. Same thing with Finns and Estonians, I'd never call them our little brothers (some of them do though).

Of course we are the best at being obnoxious.

We are the best at everything hockey related.

THIS IS OUTHOUSE!

/end thread

Seriously, way back 10 or so years ago, the Russian fan base was definitely up there fighting in the medal rounds every year. But not really for years now. So the answer is all the rest?

What are you even lying about?

Some Swedes hate Finland and that they do it proper.

Like this Swedish chap after they (Sweden) beat Finland in ... floorball(!)

Enorma ilskan efter Finlands-hånen: ”Kan man inte hantera det så...”

What I would have preferred instead of joining the EU and euro was the old Kalmar union, i.e. pretty much all of Fennoscandia united. Pretty similar climates and mostly similar cultures, law systems etc. Would have made a lot of sense. Of course, just a pipe dream, given the present political realities.

I don't dislike Sweden or Swedes but will harass any blind homers, no matter what country they are from. And yes, that includes Finns as well.

"You're tired of everything here (Finland). Bad food, bad coffee and the beer probably will be bad when we will celebrate the victory this evening. I'm so fücking tired of Finland, I'm tired of everything. I just want to leave this country and never come back." (Quote)

Classic.

"Superstar" o' mighty floorball-nation Sweden Robin Nilsberth, 32-yers old, after Sweden won(!) over Finland in the floorball World Championships in Hellsinki that nobody in the rest of the world even care/know a millimeter of. Except the 12,000 or so Finns that booed him all through out the game.

That's the dream. Think there is popular support for this idea in all countries. Alas, the powers that be.

My guess is that the ratio of anal sphincters to fans is probably more or less the same across the nations. There appear to be more Canadian fans here than other nations so …

And yes, I think you could draw the same conclusion about Leafs fans.

Maybe baby I may be right or I may be wrong - but overall Sweden think they are the King Kong of the North. Top dog. Even today. In everything.

Sweden is the most internationally influentual Nordic country though, across the board. I'm not saying that boastfully - it's just a fact that bigger countries have more influence and a bigger profile. Look at England vs the rest of the UK, USA vs Canada and so on.

For example, a Finnish tv show would never get primetime slots in Sweden the way Solsidan did in Finland. That would be incredibly odd in a way that doesn't apply in reverse apparently.

Might wanna get down from Gustaf's highchair.. speaking in absolutes is probably the most stupid thing I know.

There are some internationally aclaimed Finnish Tv-series on Netflix like ''Bordertown'' and ''Deadwind'' which are watchable. And I believe Moomins were quite popular in Sweden. I think the language barrier is the problem for Finnish series and movies to break out, because the language sounds so strange to others.

I'm not saying Finnish tv is bad, just that it's not mainstream here in the same way Swedish tv can be there. The same goes for Norwegian and Danish tv here, and maybe for Estonian shows in Finland. It's just a way to illustrate the difference in everyday exposure between the countries

Yep, not denying that. The most popular shows in the Northern Europe come from Sweden. Yet most of the shows we all consume come from USA and apparently UK (which my mother loves). But let's focus on hockey.

Did @NyQuil call Canada an outhouse?

I do think TSN is a big part of the 'problem'.

The week before the tourney begins (even in non covid times) they start showing famous Canadian victories. I feel like I've seen every second of the 6 gold medal run about 500 times now. Then they show Gretz demolising the Czechs in the 70s. The newfy guy with gold medal winning goal on D. It is on an endless loop!

My fav TSN thing is constantly trying to make Canada look like an underdog at this tourney when they have been a gold favorite for my entire life. 'The Russians have Michkov and Canada is clearly an underdog'. Or that the Euro teams have all the skill while Canada is, seemingly, a lunch pail crew of hard workers with a lot of 'grit'! Am I the only one seeing Powers, Perfetti, Bedard, Wright and MacT running like the globetrotters. If you look at the last decade (over 200 playes) I'm not sure Canada has had more than 10 not drafted in round 1 and 2. This isn't JUST heart, it's also a stacked team year after year.

FTR.. I think it's awesome how good Canada is and they seem to be getting better and better. I also think it's great TSN has made this such a must watch event. I don't mind the confidence. But the 'this is our game' commercials plus TSN plus Don Cherry not able to pronounce one Euro's name for 2 decades... it adds up!

I also have to acknowledge that no nation is as good as scoring a goal in the final minute than Canada. It's amazing to watch year after year. AINEC.lol

I think TSN has toned it down a tad, actually. I recall the hype being absurdly ridiculous around the mid/late 2000s. So much so the country seemed to have a little WJC fatigue in the following years. I think people also started realizing too much pressure was being put on teenagers.
