Who is he suing? He bought the team from the Melnyk trust, not the NHL.

It's possible that the Melnyk trust represented to him that there wasn't an open investigation, and it turned out there was, but even if that were true, his recourse is against the Melynk trust, not the NHL.
He alluded the NHL likely held this info back during the buying process so the franchise could sell for the most it possibly could.

The NHL is the one that decided the penalty and the investigation was active during the buying process. The NHL is definitely one of the parties that should be sharing any info they have with Andluer during the buying process.

The only reason Andluer wouldn't sue is to avoid creating headlines and staying in good graces with Bettman and Co. but in my opinion he should absolutely go after them for this. IF it is true that no one told him or warned him this could happen during the buying process.

I agree, it certainly sounds like Andlauer and team were not aware of this throughout the purchase process. And its a very important bit of information that should have been brought forward. The NHL may not have been forthcoming. This certainly would be a key piece in the negotiation process and would have affected the purchase price. It equates to buying a building that has a lingering foundation problem that was not made knowledgable in the buying process, only to find out later that there were inspections going on with a possible foundation problem, but no one talked about it. Now the new owner has to deal with this issue that will have an impact on the shiny new toy.

Andlauer has said that he was told about it, and very aware of it. Dorion assured him it was “not a big deal”, or something along those lines, something that was happening but Andlauer didn’t have to worry about. He downplayed what was happening. Part of the reason he’s unlikely to get anything outside a scouting job in the league again.

The issue Andlauer would have with information not being given would be with the Melnyk board and Dorion specifically, who would be the ones who would be letting Andlauer know what he’s in store for.

That assumes the Melnyk board and Dorion were made aware of how big the punishment could be.

Why was the verdict not made prior to the sale, the NHL took 18 months to figure this out, and decided that they were only ready to announce it thirty days after the sale.

It's not like this is a court of law were you can taint the jury pool, the investigation process would have been fully completed, the NHL could easily disclose the range of potential punishments being considered as well as the factual findings to all the potential buyers, but it sounds like they didn't.

I think it was the Melnyk group that told him it was “not a big deal”.

probably all timing . I got the sense that they were investigating and who knows where that was on their schedule .

There are optics to consider about forfeiting it being seen as a vote of non-confidence in the team, which might be why Andlauer was so public about wanting to keep it and it being the decision of Staios and the scouts.

That way, when they give it up it's not, we aren't sure that we are a playoff team next year, it's that li owner wanted to keep it but out scouts believed the prospect available at 32 next year would be worth more than a 21st this year. 32 being the lowest we could pick, not a proclamation that we will pick there.

they don't gotta tell the team shit.
by not communicating the team can think they have doubts they can recreate or improve their season by deciding to forfeit their first this year.

Something like. "We feel its important to keep our first next year to help make our roster better." and if the team shits the bed you hold onto the pick.

Prospect pool will be looking hilarious if/when they give up this years pick

In July, from the past 5 drafts the Sens will have in their system:

1st's - Boucher and Yakemchuk
2nd's - Eliasson, possibly Nordberg if he's given a contract
3rd's - Petterson. Hamara, 2025 pick

From 5 years of draft's, of which their pick was in the top 12 four times.

That's extremely funny

horribly bad; no quick fix; having to give up a 1st really stings ; between a rock and a hard place . Staios and company really have their work cut out for them to keep this team progressing.

Success on the ice forgets a lot of problems, the fact that they made the playoffs this yr & gave it a good fight will go a long way with the fans. The fact that the team's core have quite a few yrs ahead of them & that they just need to fill a hole here & there should also help the team stay in a playoff position or at least continue to fight for a playoff spot for a few yrs.

They also need to get lucky with a prospect or two, Merilainen needs to be great, Yakemchuk needs to be great, Zetterlund needs to be great & maybe Halliday surprises in Ott & maybe whoever they draft this yr or the yr after turns into a really good player or an unexpected prospect breaks out.

Even if you believe that it is integral for them to get a 1st round prospect this year, it makes more sense to give up 2025 the pick and trade back into the draft. They might be able to move their 2026 pick with protections for a pick in the 21 range. They end up in the same situation (no 2026 pick), but have some protection for a worst case scenario where they miss the playoffs and pick high.

I don't think there is any quick fix to how bad the prospect pool is short of trading Tkachuk in June for a monster return, which is not going to happen. We don't have any other pieces that we can reasonably flip and get multiple 1st round tier pieces back.

Don Boyd and the boys aren’t going to make it look much better with the 19th overall pick they choose.

Would be cool if they find a way to get Isaac Howard to sign there just because of how grim the prospect pool is.

Is 19th where we’re choosing finally?
