Where would you rate Thatcher Demko among all goalies?

What about any of this says “middle of the pack,” much less top-10?

A lot of goalies haven't even played 10 games, and a really bad game can tank your numbers. He's been pretty mediocre this year but again, sample size.

Was a top 10ish goalie last year fwiw.

What a surprise this thread is gaining traction after the Canucks let in 7 goals in consecutive games.

Demko is a top 10 goalie in the league don't let one of the worst coached and defensive teams in the league fool you in to thinking otherwise.

Even with those spotty, mediocre numbers he's been Vancouver's MVP this season.

Or.....you could pile on to the opinion that a goalies numbers are a direct correlation to their performance (which we should all know is nonsense as educated fans).

Demko is alright. He can throw up a wall sometimes and steal games while other times he's pretty average.
Not great but nothing wrong with that either.

I suspect* virtually none of the posters quoting Demkos poor stats have a clue what Sats and Bik said last night about Demko in the post-game show.

*Who am I kidding, suspect? I guarantee it.

NHL Goalie Statistics

Thatcher Demko ranks 29th (minimum 5 games played) on expected goals. Not a top 10 goalie.

Vancouver with the chances they've given up this year with Demko in net should have given up 38 goals. They've given up 39 goals.

So your narrative that he's just behind a crappy defense may be true but he isn't helping his team either.

Personally I like to use more than a 4 game sample size from 2 seasons ago.

This really isn't hard.
Last season Jack campbell was better by a sure margin.

This season campbell has a 1.88 gaa and a. 936 save percentage.
Demko has a 2.56 gaa and a. 918 save percentage. Obviously Toronto might be a better team, but that's a significant difference in stats.

Edit: the most shocking stat stat and one of the biggest indicators of elite talent is gsaa.
Campbell is at 6.3 and demko at 1.8

There's literally no argument that demko is better than campbell, though I wouldn't blame someone for taking campbell going forward due to the age difference

This is nitpicking, but if you want to spell it out it's not a save percentage but a save ratio. Obviously a sub 1.000 percentage (sub 1%) would be pretty awful for a goalie... The trad "sv%" in the official stats is an atavistic throwback to the times when it was actually expressed as a percentage.

Let's see... I've heard many say, most especially @WooTangClan, that the Canucks D is miles better than the Oiler's D.

2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22...
Koskinen .911 sv% (HDSV% .832) 2.88 GAA 73GP 67GS 39W
Demko .910 sv% (HDSV% .818) 2.95 GAA 73GP 71GS 34W

This season only...
Koskinen .918 sv% (HDSV% .873) 2.59GAA 9GP 8GS 8W
Demko .907 sv% (HDSV% .819) 2.99GAA 11GP 11GS 5W

...so somewhere just behind Koskinen.

Dang, has Kostko quietly been that good? As in, not great, but he hasn't been the hopeless tire fire he's usually assumed to be?

Canuck fans seem to have blinders on about their players. Demko being top 5? ridiculous, mid pack at best. QH a Norris caliber defenseman, EP top 5 center, Pods as a prospect etc. You can find lots of ways to try to justify, and be dogmatic about it but your fan base is often way off about how good these players are. Look at your record! I DO like Hoglander though.

I know this is old and Demko’s stats have since tanked, but GSAA is really only a combination of SV% and workload. It uses league average save percentage to determine what an “average” goalie would have given up in the same workload compared to what the goalie in question actually gave up. It has the same problems as SV% though in that it doesn’t take into account shot quality. What you want is goals saved above expected.

A 2.63 GAA on a mediocre team is pretty good. I would say he is something like #10 even though his GAA is more like #15. He isn't quite at the level of the top tenders which I would say are probably: Vassy, Andersen, Markstrom, Jarry, Campbell, Saros, Quick, Flower.

Huh.

Get an NHL coach, and look. First star of the week or whatever.

All those stat watchers are going to continue to be embarrassed.

IMO he is on par with all of those guys now, ok maybe not Vasilevski. All he needed was the slightest bit of help. He's been dominant. His numbers are starting to reflect that.

Gets real quiet when he plays really well, but thread floods when he plays like shit. Funny.

Seems like it kinda died a natural death right around the time he started playing better? Either way it’s a solid bump, just saying it doesn’t seem like anything malicious to me.

He is a 14/15 in save percentage among 10 games played goalies right now. That is, right now. I would rate him higher if we consider future value though, we will likely be better and better for years to come.

Goalies are so up and down. I don't like to let small segments of a season change my mind. The current sv% leaders is a pretty crazy list.

Demko is a career .913. I think he's probably a little better than that, not a lot. I'd have him about 10th.
