Sorry but what?

Admit I haven’t watched him much but…Speed? Strength & puck protection?

Can you elaborate in reference to other players who have elite skating or speed, or provide examples/comps of his puck protection? People like to make out the latter like he’s f***ing Hossa… I’m not ready to accept that.
Speed - his skating has went from below average when he was drafted to great as he has put a ton of work into it especially his first step. He has tremendous straight line speed but he wins puck battles and throws other teams off with changing from a glide to flat out, catching them off guard.

His skating isn't elite, but in conjunction with the rest of the traits people are mentioning makes him so hard to handle for the other team.

And to answer your question without flaming you as others have, he is absolutely in a class of very few in the history of the game in terms of puck protection. He's giving LA fits right now because they're having to double and triple team him to get the puck back below the dots.

be interesting how he would be viewed if either he or Mcdavid were traded. would he then get the full superstar treatment? Always wondered that with Malkin too
It really shouldn't matter for Leon even if he and McDavid spend the next 6 or 7 years together he really is that good.

Comparing Marian Hossa to a vastly superior player like Draisaitl is a bad look.

Size, puck protection, hockey IQ , passing, shot all are levels above Hossa man.

I would say Drai is probably the hardest player to get the puck off of along with Mack and Crosby...

I think he's the 2nd (maybe 3rd behind Mackinnon) best player in the world. And I would argue Leon is more important to Edmonton's success than McDavid is.

McDavid is an open ice game breaker. But Leon Draisaitl is the engine of that team. It goes as he does.

He is the best puck protector in the league. If you don't watch the games just say so. His speed is very very good. His strength is among the best as no one can seperate him from the puck.

He's better then Hossa ever was.

Draisaitl's game also looks like it would age really well. He could be productive even when he's in his late 30s, should he choose to play that long. That would also affect his ranking.

Drai can look uninterested at times especially defensively but the guy just produces and steps it up in the playoffs. I'd say he ends up between 25 and 20th overall if he stays healthy and productive late into his career.

I think when it’s all said and done, people will put mcdavid in the 5-7 overall area. Drasaitl should be in the 20-25 area (when it’s all said and done). I also think in 20 years when we have discussions about who was criminally underrated, Leon drasaitl will be at the top of the list. Aside from his skill set,
production, he has ovechkin’s durability gene and I think he will have jagr’s longevity gene.

I'm sorry but top 25 is absolutely insane. I'd say he could end up around 50 if things go well. Forsberg and Malkin are at 51 and 52 and I don't think Draisaitl is better than either.

Lol crosby dusts Draisaitl

Hes behind OV/ by a lot right now as well

Hes in the Patrick Kane tier as long as he doesnt fall off fully

If he has another 5 year dominance like this then he is top 15-20
Is 5 more years of dominance mean equal to his previous 5 years? Over the last 5 seasons he is scoring at a 50+ goal, 120 point pace (while missing very little time), and also putting up all time playoff numbers.

So if he can play at a 50+ goal, 120 point pace for 10 years I would probably put him in the top 10 all time. I don't think many players have ever done that.

One thing that will hurt Draisaitl is, despite gaudy playoff, he collapses in the important games.

In the last 5 games of the Vegas series, when the team needed him to be a star, he no showed. 3 points in 5 games. -6

McDavid, his semi regular linemate, had 8 points in 5 games and was -1.

The raw numbers this year look great. Actually watching the games, he looked atrocious and was the biggest cause in the Oilers getting eliminated.

I dont think this is true, he is a great playoff performer especially in important games. Selecting his last 5 games (and conveniently omitting a four goal performance in game one of the series) is not a fair assessment. Not to mention Draisaitl played the final 2 games of the Vegas series with a hurt arm due to Pieto's brutal two hand slash.

In games where the Oilers are either facing elimination or have a chance to advance Draisaitl is 4-14-18 +2 in 10 gp. Slightly above his career pace in the playoffs. 2 four point games, 1 five point game. Draisaitl is a gamer.

Simpletons will always need to see McDavid go down for a significant amount of time before they budge on their stance, so a universal high ranking may be tough to achieve.

Anyone else should be mesmerized that the guy has finished top 4 in both goals and points for 5 consecutive seasons, which is something no one else has done since Gretzky.

If he performs in a similar fashion over the next 5 seasons and does his part to help McDavid and the Oilers win, those who are able to put aside bias and nostalgia will no doubt rank him fairly high all-time.
