I think Carolina is out on him if he's gonna look for top dollar. While we could use a game breaking talent on the wings, overall there is tremendous depth there through the top 9. I think Ehlers would be a better target at a lower price point or as, always looking to strengthen down the middle.

I think his playoff performance will scare Carolina away for good. It’s basement or bust for Mitch and his dad now.

For sure. Carolina is always looking for a deal on distressed assets but I think you're right with the best fit being a bottom team with lots of cap space. It's a win win situation. Can't see a contending team paying the price for someone who has shown time and time again that they can't get it done.

Why he doesn’t even deserve the 12.5, he just broke 100 points once for his career.

That doesn’t scream he needs 13+.

He's the top UFA in a market that is about to see a massive cap increase.

You don't need to convince me that he's not worth $13M+. I agree with that.

The issue is there's always 2 idiot GMs out there to blow his value beyond that threshold.

True
$12.5M ain't getting it done in Califonia.
  1. Florida (e.g., Florida Panthers or Tampa Bay Lightning):
  • With no state income tax, players keep more of their earnings. Factoring in federal taxes and other deductions, a player might take home roughly $2.4 million from their $4 million salary.
  1. Ontario (e.g., Toronto Maple Leafs or Ottawa Senators):
  • In Canada, both federal and provincial taxes are applied. In Ontario, players face some of the highest tax rates in the league. After taxes, the same $4 million contract could leave a player with around $2.0 million in take-home pay—a significant reduction compared to Florida.
  1. California (e.g., Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks or Anaheim Ducks):
  • California imposes the highest state income tax rate in the U.S., at 13.3% for high earners. Combined with federal taxes, this means a player’s take-home pay on a $4 million contract could drop to approximately $1.9 million — the lowest among these three examples.

True. Researched it a bit more, but its not much different than Toronto. Obviously if he goes to FL< TX, TN, WA, or NV thats a huge advantage and they can pay $500k-2M under market.

There is potential he becomes the highest paid NHLer this offseason with the cap going up. I guarentee atleast one team will offer him that amount of money

Unless he re-signs in Toronto, which I think is still a possibility, he might be given the red carpet treatment by San Jose and his very close friend, Marleau. They were very close in Toronto, and the Sharks have a decent future already in place with the kids, so adding Mitch would do wonders for them.

Him and his family can call it home and have nobody even know who he is there. Get away from chaotic fan base and chaotic reporters

The Ducks have been extremely measured in their rebuild, I don’t think they do it. Chicago and San Jose on the other hand? Both have a young blue chip C who in theory pairs well with a 100 point winger and have shown a willingness to add veteran FAs.

Yeah, he doesn't really have a whole lot of options for teams without State Income Tax unless Vegas does Vegas things. But there's still teams like Detroit/Chicago/Columbus/Carolina/Utah that have the cap space and have significantly lower taxes.

I don't think he gets any less than $13M. Mikko got $12.5M and that was not on the open UFA market, and was in a tax free state. Yes, you can argue all day that Mikko shows up when it matters, but that's more of a fan argument than one between NHL agents and GMs who are negotiating. If a GM says that, the agent goes "OK, we'll go to the next guy."
