I could easily see him in Pitt. Where ever he lands its going to be weird to see him with a different logo on his chest.

25 brave souls sticking with Toronto, eh?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he's back, AGAIN, but after so many kicks at the can you gotta think enough is enough for the Leafs.

Why he doesn’t even deserve the 12.5, he just broke 100 points once for his career.

That doesn’t scream he needs 13+.
Coming off a 94 point campaign, Marner signed for $10.9M in 2019, which was 13.37% of the cap.

In Year 2-6 of his deal, he's put up 5 straight 100 point paces, a Selke nomination, plays every situation. Teams are going to look past his softness, whiney and playoff disappearing act. Gaudreau is the only player in recent history to leave as a UFA after a 100 point season, and he was coming off a monster career year after a couple of down years. A player of Marner's caliber, at least his regular season play, never become available in free agency. For teams like Chicago and Anaheim, who are looking to make that next jump to become a playoff team, will be all over Marner.

If he signs for the same cap percentage as he did in 2019, he would carry a $12.75M cap hit. He's going to get offers of $13M+ in free agency, no doubt about it.

Why in the world would he sign in Chicago or San Jose?

Even with him they’re far away from being a contender.
San Jose would give him a bag, nice weather and zero pressure. Might be a nice change of environment. Not sure Mitch really cares about winning.

hard to imagine him in another jersey. and as much as it sucks to see him go, it just doesnt work here and Matthews + Nylander are already signed.
should Leafs really consider paying Marner 14 or more? wouldn't the same thing just happen again and again?

On top of that, he is the best UFA available and it's not even close. He can play C or W, PP and PK. He's definitely going to get offers around 12.5-14. Drai got 14 but didn't hit UFA.

I wouldn't say he can "play C". He can take a draw for sure, but Marner is not a guy who will be effective in the middle.

Since I think he wants more opportunities at a Cup, I'll say Canes. I don't think he fits well into that system but it is the logical choice in terms of being in win-now mode and looking for a big piece to get them over the hump.

Teams like the Ducks/Sharks etc would also be good fits but Marner is more or less giving up on a Cup if he goes that route imo.

Not a Bill Guerin player and they need a center don't see it. That's why I didn't include them.
They need a Top 6 RW almost as much as a center.

If Guerin moves Rossi, it makes a lot of sense that the $17M they have in cap space is going to be used to go after someone like Marner. Much of their roster is already set for next season.

You know, I'm not a Hawks fan but I'd absolutely love to see him go to Chicago to set up Bedard in the slot for the next 10 years. Chi could probably offer him the most money too just based on where they are in their rebuild and how their highest paid player is making 5.5m (unless you count Weber's contract).

That would be absolutely sick. Make it happen Kyle Davidson

Somehow I doubt Marner wants to go from choking in the playoffs in Toronto to not even making them for the next 5+ years in Pittsburgh...

At least with Chicago/San Jose/Anaheim you're trending upward.
I could see him going very short term with Pitts, til Crosby retires. Then he cashes elsewhere when the cap has risen significantly. Could work for both sides.

Probably end up with the Kings, Holland is the new gm, cap to spend, with money to spend and he's reckless lol

We're constantly going to hear about the Mitch Marner sweepstakes this summer.

It reminds me of 2011 when Brad Richards was the biggest UFA. He and Marner are kind of similar as well: Two guys known for their hockey IQ and playmaking who aren't/weren't very big or physical. I'd say Marner is the superior RS player, but his playoff performances don't touch Brad's.

Whoever signs him will get a boost offensively and a reliable all-situations player, but I don't think the contract will age that well (assuming he signs for seven years or longer). I don't think he'll be worth $13 mil or whatever he's going to get three or four years from now. For his sake, hopefully he's able to be more productive in the post season.

Also this isn't just up to Guerin . If Craig Leipold says get me Marner Guerin is not going to say no.

Utah still makes a lot of sense to me. New owner that is seemingly eager to spend, with a young core that should be pushing to a playoff spot and for Marner it is well clear of Toronto.

I dont see a scenario where a Bedard Marner line has any success in the playoffs. They are way too similar. Elite skill, undersized slow perimeter players.

They are super similar except one player is one of the best ever at elevating his game in the playoffs and the other is one of the worst all time. They also play different positions... hmmmm so not really similar at all.

I would never allocate 13 million of my cap to Marner. Even if its going up, you cant win with him as a go to guy.

Unless you stick them with a power forward like Tyler Bertuzzi, who's already on the team and signed thru 2028. With Bedard & Marner up front it's not inconceivable they make playoffs by then. Of course Tyler Bertuzzi's 30 years old rn but you get the idea.

Chicago has to at least be considering this.

Edit Bertuzzi contract length

Utah doesn't need help on wing (Keller Guenther, eventually But and Iginla, Schmaltz is there too). Utah needs to allocate that money on another center (to play with Cooley) or a top defender, right now Serg is their #1D.

If Utah signed Marner, it would be a franchise altering mistake.

So who plays Marner’s minutes? 100 points. Top line. Play driver. Top pk guy. Elite 200 ft game. Makes the guys he plays with better.
Thing is though that they don’t need another 100 point player to make the playoffs. They’ll make it anyway.

What they need to replace is his lack of postseason production which should be fairly easy to do.
