Where did Yzerman go wrong with the rebuild?

AlJo's situation is another negative mark on the org's handling of the blue line this year.

He probably needs to go down and figure some things out, but they can't send him down because they burnt up his entire elc in GR and is no longer waiver exempt.

So now you have a case of a young player who can't get time with the big club because he has struggled and cant play in GR for fear of losing him.

Slow playing prospects has it down sides and this is a clear example.
Albert was slow walked because he has aspects of his game that have always been questioned about translating to the NHL. He finally showed he could consistently handle the AHL last year, sending him back down is not going to help him with the parts of his game he needs to accommodate for at the NHL level.

Maybe with enough time he'll make the necessary adjustments at the NHL level, or maybe he won't. But I think those adjustments have to be made at the NHL level now, because it is the speed and size of the NHL game that is causing issues. The AHL just isn't going to push him in those ways.

Damn, you all make it sound like a prospect has never gotten better from being sent down before.

Is it a certain cure all for AlJo? No, but would be nice if we could find out right now. Don't be so certain an AHL stint can't help a guy.

This is a 20yo, 6'3 200LBs RHD who was drafted 6OA 2 years ago and has already put up points in the NHL. And the NHL club has his rights on an ELC for years with zero season expectations right now.

He's not going for (insert B level assets) - This conversation starts a Marco Kasper +
About to be 21 ... 11 nhl career pts isnt something to brag about

Nobody is trying a top 15 draft pick for him atm let alone a top 10 prospect. I agree the team has his rights and if I'm them I try and work it out and hold on to him cause they wont get anything close to what they want for him now

Horrible Free Agent signings. Also, team lacks any kind of identity and direction, who are they? What do they want to be?
This is going to be a team led by their back end.

Edvinsson and Seider playing half the game. ASP running the power play and being an offensive specialist on the 2nd pair. One of Wallinder/Buium/Johansson or a free agent rounding out the rest of the top 4. Two of the best young goalie prospects out there in Cossa and Augustine. Larkin, Kasper, Danielson down the middle as two way + competitive guys. Hope 1 or 2 of the wingers we’ve got exceeds expectations or if not look at getting one via trade.

That’s the identity of what they’re building. They just need more of the pieces to arrive and the ones that are here to keep maturing.

The issue is just how much offense can Kasper/Danielson provide, and if they do provide a good amount when will that be and how old will Larkin be by then and will he still be the same.

If someone could answer these questions the same team would be winning the cup every single season.

Fair questions but only time will answer it. All pressure shouldn't be on them either. Raymond, MBN, Buchelnikov, Sandin-Pellikka etc. could be offensive drivers complemented by two-way centers.

ridiculous that he hasn't done a thing after that pathetic road trip

Yzerman clearly doesn't care about this season, and its yet another throw away season, so why even watch when the manager has no interest in improving the roster?

does he even watch the games?

Lol. This is not a serious organization if that clown is actually still employed.
I doubt Illitch even cares. The attendance numbers are fine, and he's still making his money, so who cares abut actual on ice performance?? Not Illitch, not Yzerman..

fans should stop attending games until changes are made, and those who are still attending, please "BOOOOO" to let the organization know fans deserve better.

I live in Ottawa, the Wings are in town December 5th, and I'm not going. I haven't missed a game in Ottawa in over a decade, but I'm not paying to watch these bums

Not attending games won't show them. The key to get mgmt to listen is to stop posting online. The social media metrics tanking will scare them into action. No twitter/insta/FB/HFB/etc... cold turkey. Engagement tanks... they'll listen.

Damn, apparently Yzerman went wrong with the rebuild by missing his opportunity last year to unload Edvinsson for a couple of B level prospects and a 2nd round pick

At first I had the exact same thought as you but I believe they were actually discussing acquiring David Jirecek.

Yep, they were discussing Jirecek.

I was making a comparison to highlight the absurdity of trading for/trading away a 20 year old 6th overall pick for peanuts because he doesn't have have a bunch of NHL points yet.

Its absurd of you to think they'd get filet mignon back for a guy who's in his 2nd season and was in and out of the lineup and headed towards 3 yrs since being drafted

I can see a contending team throwing a late first like dallas did for lundqvist but no ones throwing a top half 1st rd or a top end prospect at this point for him

Unlike jiricek Edvinsson didnt even get a sniff in the nhl until now ... not saying jiricek is a bust, but again no one's overpaying for him atm

I always said he looks like a poor man's Djoos (better defensively, less offense, but similar size and skating), and that his lack of size will be an issue at the NHL level.

I've had similar concerns with other prospects but Ray, Kasper and Burger bulked up, AlJo didn't and Mazur is only half way there.

Could've had Horvat for Hronek and Kasper. Wings would've made the playoffs last season.

Also, Stevie could've traded for Graves instead of Leddy, then we wouldn't be watching Chiarot right now. Graves is a true stay at home D, which would match up better with Mo, allowing Ed to anchor the second pair.

Horvat was traded 2-3yrs ago ...umm having pelikka and kasper for the future or a 1st round playoff exit. Tough call

I'm sure getting mo a partner and splitting up seider and edvinsson is something yzerman wants to do. We could have done alot of deals. Should have traded for tage thompson before he blew up. Sam reinhart ... sh*t happens

That is how I see it to. And also getting a high octane winger or two is a lot easier than trying to land centers D or goalies. It's almost appears as if Yzerman had some kind of plan. The biggest threat is if some of these guys have their development level off or regress. But that can happen to any young player its the nature of the game.

Beginning to think this entire rebuild hinges on finding a quality replacement for Larkin to take over once he's in his thirties. Could stand to find some more LW, too. Don't know how you can't feel good about the defense and goalies going forward.

Removing our entire coaching staff is #1 priority.
