But i don't believe in tax advantage myth. These guys are multimillionaires, they have accountants and it's their job to know all the loop holes. We know how much they get paid but no one knows where that money actually goes. It's us the regular schmucks who picks up the tab.

I always get amused when people complain that few teams have tax advantage due to laws or what ever. If that was really true, Panthers and Lighting for example would have been number 1 location for UFA players ever since those franchises started. But that haven't really been the case.

I see the argument for unloading him, but I'm skeptical that scenario would have held up in reality -

1- let's say you tank but you don't tank quite enough and/or have bad lottery luck. You get Will Smith that year. Really good prospect. Is he going to be better than Larkin?

2- For however bad we think this year's team is, it's orders of magnitude worse without Larkin. Are we all fine with being absolutely terrible? Maybe we are in theory...

My somewhat reasonable complaint is not that we should have traded Larkin, but if we don't add all the FA's maybe we are 6th or 7th in the 2023 lottery and we get Michkov. Even that requires a lot of if's.

It's a real thing. How much money is saved sometimes... meh... like you said.

The accountants get involved because players play in other states, city's, arenas and they sometimes come with taxes, then like you mentioned, there's write-offs.

Like you said, about Florida, it's a real advantage. Disadvantages are things like property rent and insurance. Being a millionaire in New York and California is surely different lifestyle vs living in Winnipeg/Minnesota/Seattle/etc. Arizona is a tax friendly state, and you see a lot of over-the-hill players signing their last contracts or players traded there on a final year or two.

Larkin would be getting 90 pts on some stacker team and we would be going why did we trade him!? While hoping Fantilli or whatever becomes him.

We have always needed Larkin and then someone else. So even if Fantilli or whoever not 1st overall center prospect you get, Cutter Gauthier or something. You would still need someone else again.

far too often instead of objectively assessing SYs work, some folks rearrange any SYs negatives to being a KH issue...that's a problem...

No, not everything Kenny did was awful, but he did hamstring the rebuild with his faulty drafting.

I remember the majority of posters preferring Necas or Suzuki the year we got Rasmussen. Then the cognoscenti of this board was split between Hughes/Bouchard/Dobson the year we got Filip ****ing Zadina. I know a lot of people liked that pick at the time but I wasn't one of them. Not to mention defense was a glaring need.

I'm not even including the Cholowski pick when everyone wanted Chychyrun since it was a play to go for Stamkos. When the people on this board outdraft you then that is a real problem. Kenny left the cupboards bare when he left outside of Larkin, Bert and Hronek.

I don't remember who I liked that year but I could respect swinging for the fences with Rasmussen. If he hit we would have our own Tage Thompson. As it is, we appear to have a serviceable 3rd liner. That said, maybe we should just plug him in at 2c and hope for a miracle. :D

In essence, that is the core being built around. You need adults in the room when you're bringing the kids in otherwise you're repeating the mistakes of Edmonton pre-McD.

I don't really see any negatives keeping Larkin in the fold: leadership, roughly ppg player, has ties to the USNDP and respect among players. Trading away Larkin would have been a VERY unpopular move unless you get a veteran of equal value. That would have been worst than the Eichel trade in my book.

Theres a reason Larkin's last 2 years dont have a ntc. before all the hate comes lol ... just saying there's a chance,debrincat 100% wont get a 7-8 yr deal

Imagine we started playing 3 d-men and 2 forwards on every line and lined up that way. Ground-breaking development of NHL strategy.

The rebuild is more or less going as planned. We have 1 less top talent that wished for and one less lets say more strong support cast player than wished for at this point.

No Larkin last season only means we get Cotton , not MBN.
Larkin is no joke, he could made Red Wings draft top 5 last year and give huge chance to win cup any good team.
