Detroit Red Wings are loaded to make some big aggressive splashes to land star power, having a deep farm system, picks, etc. so where you sit is a lot different than the Burke era Leafs when they pulled off the Kessel deal. The only problem is the league is more watered down now, so what team has a surplus of young star talent, that they want to get rid of for.., more youth. So that's your big problem. No supply.

Remember when we thought that this was the summer they were going to make some legitimate offseason plashes like trying to lure Brandon Montour or Sam Reinhart/Steven Stamkos over here?

"Oh, but Steve doesn't want to give term!" Ok, then don't land any legitimate top NHL talent. That's why we're actually still looking at Jeff Petry and Erik Gustaffson on the blue line.

It doesn't has to be 21-year old but someone from Larkin's age group. 27-30, someone in his prime but that might be again easier said than done.

With the way that some Steve bots around here are, Larkin will be 35 by the time they're "ready" to contend" and that's perfectly fine with them.

Who thought that? I remember a bit of talk of Stamkos, but everyone knew things were limited this year with the need to get Mo and Ray extensions done.

I'll repeat this until I'm blue in the face -look at the number of contracts coming off the books the next 2 years. He's going to have a ton of cap space to work with, and I would bet he'll be more willing to give term.

Indeed. Thats why Wings should start trading. We have the baits, someone will bite. Like Yzerman himself, on Hronek-trade. First it was no from Stevie, then he called back and said this is what i want and the deal was made.

Thing is who's available that will take our team to the next level? If yzerman thought hronek was a 1st pairing guy he'd have kept him. Guys like that are just not available

No ones trading a draisaitl or 25 ish top line star. The only way to go is to grab a zegras who had 60 + back to back pts to start his career and hope he comes here and gets to 80

Or a cozens who had 30 goals 2 seasons back ...we have to find under performing guys and hope they explode here. Only other way is the draft

Still think we'll end up with good picks in 25 and 26 drafts

Last time he had a ton of cap we got Chiarot/Copp/Perron/Kubalik/Maata. (20.375 million dollars annually). Not much recently says he's spend it wisely to bring in a UFA at all.

Yzermans done a pretty good job in trades/draft. Really rough in UFA as a Red Wing GM.

well, I would argue/hope the difference is we're starting to come into the contention window and he's going for more than stopgaps.

Without elite goaltending this year the Wings may legitimately have 2-3 wins.
Weird comment. Despite having a rough schedule and the flu, Wings are keeping up with Boston and Lighting, and have surpassed our Atlantic competitors; Sens, Sabres, Canadians... all the while playing less games.

I'm guessing you'r

Resigning Kane. Lazy, one zone, I don't care type rehab/retirement stint. He's been terrible.

Swore I was stayin out of this thread, but that lazy dump in from the Leafs blue line, with Kasper two strides from him, and then this casual/lazy/pedestrian pivot to the bench, leaving Berger behind the play while Kasper had to chase and Tarasenko having the off wing high, just pissed me off to no end.

Goaltending has been solid and made key saves, but they have not been elite. Wings as a whole have sacrificed offense for defense first. They are committed to taking away high danger scoring threats.

So I disagree with your comment. Wings are playing boring low event hockey in order to win. Similar to what Nashville use to be. I think every win they have is warranted.

Look at last night's game against TML. They kept TML off the board 5v5 and only lost due to Leafs impeccable PP. I don't think Talbot was spectacular or the player of the game. But was good enough for them to win if not for a few bonehead penalties taken.

Talbot is top 3 in every goaltending metric and Lyon is top 10. They've have less expected goals in every game but 3 so far this year. Plop a league average 900% goalie on the team and we're looking at last in the Atlantic

sad thing is we needed every one of those guys to fill holes we couldn't realistically fill from within. The hope has to be that we continue to have kids step in over the next two years and we can make fewer but more significant moves.

Then we deal for Kaprizov.

Chicken/egg. Can't have a chicken without an egg. Point is Wings are playing low event hockey and giving up low quality chances. Any goalie that's solid would be top 10. Even Mrazek.

Look no further than last night. Talbot wasn't stellar, but good enough to win. TML offense looked weak up until their PP. That's Wings shutting them down 5v5. Goalies owe the team a thank you card.

Hronek would have never been a 1st pair guy in Detroit because thats Seider's spot. Real reason is that he got the right price. Every GM will have the right price and two 1st round picks(+ B-prospect or 2) could be that price.

Drai won't be available and i doubt Zegras will either, Buffalo wouldn't trade with divisional rival. I'd take a look at Philly, they outta tank hard to pick Hagens/Martone to go with Michkov and they could have a decent shot at McKenna too. So Travis Konecky, easily worth of 2 1st's+Berggren+prospect package.

And i would keep a close eye on Winnipeg, American players tend to get homesick eventually in Canada. Thats right Kyle Connor...

The Wings have the highest negative shot differential in the entire league. They allow "relatively" low amount of high danger chances when accounting for their shots against.. but it's still not good. The team does not play good defense, they just play low event hockey

Sounds like we agree, except for the fact you think we have "elite" goalies. We are certainly getting solid goaltending, but not elite. The team defense is the storyline. Even you pointed that out in your quote above.

Ever planted an apple tree?

Actually I have. Mom bought a dwarf Asian apple tree that was already 5 ft tall, so it grew fruit the next year. Money shortens development time, it's like buying a free agent 2C. A good one, not some garbage from Costco like Copp, lol.

(Note: This was 4 decades ago, mom's in a retirement home now.)

Hronek wouldn't have been ahead of seider here and would never got the money he wanted which is why he was dealt.

I know draisaitl wont be dealt I'm saying guys like him wouldn't be available. sabres wont deal cozens with his value so low and yzerman wouldnt dare touch zegras although I'd take a shot

Konecky?? Lmao hes not gonna take us to the promise land. Not even close.

Didnt Kyle o connor just sign??? I was thinking someone like Brad lambert from there if they were looking for pieces later on... sidenote that Colby kid they took looks like a bust lmao glad we stayed far away from him

Other NHL teams literally dind't exist the last time the Red Wings made the playoffs and have made multiple deep playoff runs and won the Cup.

Why should fans continue to shell out good money to watch this mediocre crap if the mindset from management continues to be in neutral?

Obviously games are not going to be reduced in price or made free, but you get my point.
The wings started missing the playoffs when Holland was GM, remember the stretch of like 7 years where we never had a first round pick didn't develop a single D and got destroyed in the first round every post season season and left less trade value on the team when he took over than you can count on one hand?

If this was a normal rebuild I would be with you, but its not and Yzerman said from day one it was going to be a long one. We are only entering season number 4 of his very first pick for F sake.

Wasn't our best player by a landslide drafted during those 7 years?
