They haven't had this much young talent since the late 80s when they had a bunch of talent in their early 20s: Clark, Courtnall, Damphousse, Fergus, Gill, Iafrate, Leeman, Marois & Olczyk. That team screwed it up as bad as Dubas did this team, probably even worse.

I'm confused, what is the Shanaplan exactly?

*Tank and get #1 C, #1W, #1B-W, #2 dman, sign free agent #2 C at a premium
*Surround them with soft, timid, trash players
*Never, ever address the defence and trot out old men on retirement deals or cheap reclamations
*Never, ever address the goaltending and trot out other team's trash and hope for the best
*Hire rookie coach even though you could have hired the best goddamn coach money could afford
*Call out the core asking them to consider taking less money WHILE RFAs, then giving them ALL THE f***ING MONEY WHILE THEY WERE RFAs and not even lock them up for 8 years lmao

Nah, Shanahan hired someone else to do all that. The Shanaplan is to hire someone unqualified and then go play video games or whatever it is he does to pass the time from when he hired Dubas until he finally fired him. I suppose there was a lame speech about the Red Wings in there somewhere.

I voted for pretty bad plan but you make a compelling case for the worst kind of plan.

Sums it perfectly.

It’ll be the biggest missed opportunity and failure in Leafs history. Properly tanked and drafted elite high end talent only to f*** it all up. Bad luck with COVID to be sure, but the Leafs could’ve adapted, or made smarter moves during the pandemic, like not trading the Jarvis pick to dump Marleau, trading for either Bennett or Hall in 2021 instead of f***ing Foligno, finding a better goaltender than Campbell to succeed Andersen, maybe not getting Tavares which started this whole mess.

So our solution to getting character and grit and toughness was to let Schenn Acciari O'Reilly and Bunting walk, but sign Reaves who won't be on the ice in the playoffs and Klingberg.

Are you fkn kidding me. Fk this team!

It is tragic what has happened to this franchise

I honestly don’t know if they make the playoffs next season.

It will be touch and go with the current team right now.
We’ll see what Woll can do.

The Atlantic should be wide open this year with no great team in the division. TB and Boston can’t be better, Florida will likely start slow.

When all this is over the Shanaplan will go down as one of the costliest boondoggles in modern day hockey history.

They hired a rookie president.

And right off the bat he showed his rookie stripes. Not tanking for McDavid might possibly be the worst executive decision made in the NHL for decades. Shanahan got lucky and managed to tank when there were two generational talents available in back to back draft years.

But that was more accident than by design.

Shanahan sat around that first year. "Observing" those loser blow heads snort coke and lose. If Shanahan was smart he would have done everything in his power to make them lose even more.

To give himself the best shot possible at McDavid.

Instead he fired Carlyle only in the middle of a losing streak. With the team at risk of falling out of a playoff spot. Horrorchek was promoted to stop the bleeding but only made it worse.

And the guy that let all that happen just hired the next GM.

Treliving was a lazy hire, made by a lazy president. Because his so-called Shanaplan didn't prepare a proper contingency for when his previous GM blindsided him in a failed power struggle to usurp. Nine years, and a single playoffs series win later, the mere fact this same ass hat for president is still here is a joke.

At the end of the day, the whole Shanaplan has been a bigger bust than Ishtar.

Doesn't matter what anyone says .KING KYLE OF PITTSBURGH. did this .
I still believe Tannenbaum will have treliving doing shannys job in about 8 months
Getting a raise in the salary cap is fine
But if it's just used to augment this core 4
It's asinine

I agree treliving hire was quick but that being said he still has a chance to put his stamp on this c

I don't like these options because there was a gap between what Shanahan's vision was and how Dubas executed it.

What President wants their vision to be a top heavy team in which they have to continually lose assets at the deadline or in free agency every year?

What are you talking about? They did try and tank for McDavid. They almost got McDavid. They were 1 ball away from having mcdavid. In fact many people thought we won that lottery. Still ended up with the 2nd best player in that draft.

Like I said, that wasn't on purpose.

Shanahan didn't start talking scorched earth until that summer. If they were trying to tank the first year they would have traded players for picks. They wouldn't have fired Carlyle.

The fact they came low enough in the standings to bag Marner happened despite Shanahan's incompetence, not because of his genius.

Even still, they only traded Kessel the locker room cancer that summer. Phaneuf didn't go until later in the year. As soon as they got a sniff of the playoffs, they stopped selling assets.

Started using players as own rentals.

Whatever the original Shanaplan was went out the window when he fired everyone from Nonis on down. Shanaplan 2.0 was the Babcock and Lou years where they tore it down and built it back up. Shanaplan 3.0 is the Dubas years where they went all in and sold the future in repeated failed attempt to win now.

I guess this is Shanaplan 4.0.

Yeah it’s crazy that getting these types of players was never addressed and than out of pure desperation the moronic GM acquires all of them on expiring contracts at the trade deadline and than they walk for nothing.

Of course they left, they know this team is a bunch of spoiled brats and they don’t want to do all the heavy lifting for them.
