When does the Yzerplan start getting criticized?

Yzerplan sucks
Yzerman is overrated as GM. Similar how HFboard hyped the hell out of Chyka when he was Coyotes GM only for them to never make playoffs except the covid year when they got swept. This board always gets excited for teams with full of young players who are still raw with no real veteran leadership to show them the ropes. You need good trades, good players not just drafting high potential players.

There was a fantasy that Yzerman could routinely pick out the next Brayden Point or Nikita Kucherov in the late rounds and build a contender quickly. Also he inherited Stamkos and Hedman and he had nothing in Detroit other than Larkin to build around, who's not on their level.

He's done an ok job, but has the team in no man's land it looks like, trying to save his job with veteran signings. He has Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko in key top 6 roles right now for example. The contracts they signed are fine, but how does this team contend any time soon with a situation like that?

Arguably the Sharks are in better spot right now going forward and there's been few GMs maligned as much as Grier on these boards. Just need to get lucky in the lottery really if you want to be a contender, the scouting is so good these days impact youngsters go early and Detroit had poor lottery luck.
Well Oilers have been lucky 4 times drafting 1st overalls and drafted the 2 best players in the world plus Bouchard, Hopkins etc. They havent won anything after a decade and still have weaknesses. As i said, you need more than good drafting to win a cup. You need good trades, good developement program, good coaches and assistants. Does Detroit have all of that after 5 years of Yzerman? I dont think they have.

This would make sense if the team was actually full of young players. All we have is shitty veteran leadership and only 2 young players. Everyone else is buried in the minors.

Well thats also another problem. Not sure what Yzerman is doing. I feel like Canucks being built by crappy management still managed to ger ahead of Detroit when it comes to development if you compare the timeline of when they actually
started rebuilding. Detroit still doesnt have their franchise goalie and an elite center or 2. Canucks had Markstrom and Demko before giving Markstrom up. Not to mention Hughes, Norris winner and 2 elite 100 point centers. Not sure what Detroit has outside of Larkin, Raymond and Seider in NHL plus some high potential prospects in Edvinsson etc.

I'm also not a huge fan of the Kasper/Danielson picks for them. Both will end up good NHLers, but thought it would have been smarter for them to take swings at guys with higher upside, given their terrible lottery luck (which isn't Yzerman's fault) didn't gift them any elite talent.
Who knows what their ultimate upside will be, but Kasper looked fantastic in preseason and the fanbase's biggest problem with Yzerman right now is that Kasper isn't on the NHL roster.

He started the AHL season with 1+1 last night.

Canucks core is basically from 2014-2018, with Miller as a veteran piece from 2011.
Detroit's core is going to be 2019-2024 (ideally) with Larkin as a veteran piece from 2014. Different timelines.

Agree with all of this.

Giving SY the benefit of the doubt - the deals to Kane & Tarasenko are only 1/2 years deals respectively. There are a couple marginal longer term deals (Compher, Copp), but those guys are decent roster filler.

Right now - the Wings have 4 proven "core" players on the roster - Larkin, Debrincat, Raymond, & Seider. I know that SY was starting from scratch - but after 5 years I think it's fair to say that you'd hope for more than that. The Wings are going to make it or break it on the next generation of prospects ability to step up and contribute. The huge challenge is the scope of what is needed. Looking forward to seeing how this shakes out.

That’s honestly a bottom tier core to build around

What's a computer?
he's batting 1000 for all his 1st round picks so far, sure ed had a rough game but i think he will come around.

kasper, cossa, seider n raymond all money. danielson n ASP i think it's too early to tell.

hes been mediocre at best with UFAs.

GOOD:
-shrewd 1st round picks
-great at getting good deals for this RFAs

BAD:
-while I can understand he is trying to build a team 1st culture, has had some clearly bad UFA signings and a few mediocre 1s

AVERAGE
-trades. think hes has gotten a bit unlucky with some players that looked like good trades at first (getting walman from st.louis n vrana from WASh, husso was decent gamble) . wouldn't call his trades bad, but haven't worked out well either.

Overall grade: B. I think rebuild will hinge largely on players he has drafted, and he has drafted some good players. While progress has been slow, I think next yr or the yr after they will b a perenial 95 point plus team

What's a computer?
He jumped the gun on mediocre free agent signings instead of continuing to build through the draft.
maybe by 1 year. could have did 1 more yr of tanking instead of signing copp n co. that said they got a great player in kasper that draft.

ultimately they did continue to build through the draft IMO, that is why the prospect pool is brimming with talent. they signed the fillers to give them time to develope.

If the Red Wings don’t make the postseason this year, then Yzerman has to be on the hot seat.

Nobody else would get this long in a serious hockey market. At some point, “incremental improvement” isn’t good enough.
Incremental improvement from last season likely puts them in the playoffs this season tho…?

Sort of - the Coyotes won their first playoff series that year against the Predators, but then lost to the Avalanche in five games.
