What's wrong with Matthew Tkachuk?

Not on the “worried” list yet. He’s shooting a completely unsustainable 4.4%. He scored 40 goals on 12.3% shooting which is actually under his career average of 12.6% - none of which are remarkable or difficult to match rates. He shoots his career average and he’s at a 36-37 goal and 82 point pace. And that’s with some just wonkiness early on here on a really misfiring Panthers PP and a really low percentage of secondary assists (23.5%) that an offensive fulcrum like Tkachuk usually will obtain.

Essentially, he’s mostly having a bad luck start combined with some poor team play. It will likely end up looking like a down year for him when all is said and done but under the hood there’s not much to be alarmed about and plenty of reasons things will start returning to elite levels on the box score in the near future.

Did you comment in any of the Matthews threads last year, when he had a ‘down’ year for his usual expectations?

Curious what your take would have been then

I don’t think that at all. I know it. Your game day topics against the leafs have a half dozen mentions of Reaves in every single one of them. Feel free to check it out. I agree he’s irrelevant.

I mean he’s closer to a 100 point player than a 50-60 point one but you never know. 50-60 I guess is closer to his career average…
It’s a joke because Toronto signed a 36 year old to a three contract because Bennett

My take would have been he’s the best goal scorer in the league and sometimes superstars have down or unlucky years from a finishing perspective.

How is that relevant here? This thread is about 2023 Tkachuk and why is box score stats aren’t up to previous levels.

I took him in fantasy over players like Matthews and Mackinnon based on last season's production. That's what happened. He'll be better next year when I pass on him.
I took him 3rd overall in my league cuz we have PIMs as a category. Clearly should have taken his brother instead...

Just gathering anecdotal data for my hypothesis

My bad: also Gudas

A media hype. That doesn’t at all prove your point. Gudas wouldn’t fight Reaves. You guys have this straw man built up in your head. Nobody in leaf land thinks those things are 100% correlated. Reaves can’t play. He’ll likely get scratched in the playoffs.

I have a question for you guys though, why is it just now that it’s cool to think shooting percentages regress and progress, but we couldn’t admit that during the playoff run? Same goes for Bob.

They got him because Simmonds aged out and they wanted some volume in the room and on the bench and to fill the tough guy spot left with a guy who could hopefully play (Simmonds was unplayable).

And outside of a brutal like 10 games, Reaves was playing pretty good.

he's played a shitload of hockey over the last couple season and his style of game wears on you, and he had a pretty gnarly injury last season. it was bound to happen but im sure he will rebound once he's 100%

God's country just outside of Calgary
Tkachuk plays his best when playing on the edge. Maybe that edge has finally been blunted by coming to the rink every day in shorts and sandals and a surf board in the back seat of his exotic convertible. The broken sternum probably hasn't helped either.

Not worried about him. I don’t expect him to be an mvp finalist again or anything, wasn’t expecting 35+G and 100+PT seasons every year but I think he can definitely be a 25-30g scorer and 80+pt producer regularly. I’m sure he’s just not 100% from the playoff run. I’m not sure how recovering from a broken sternum is like but I can imagine it’s not fun or easy. I’ve hurt my collar bone, not even breaking it (I don’t think) and that alone shows you how everything tugs on each other. Short offseason and didn’t miss a game. Same thing applies with montour and Ekblad, they had a lot to rehab from, may come into their normal form later in the season or worst case scenario next season when they have a chance to rest in the offseason, properly train, training camp, preseason and hit the ground running. I’m not concerned at the moment.

Very mature.
If it’s immature to not pretend someone has caught a ‘bug’ yet is producing roughly where they have through their entire career, then I guess I’m immature. Sorry he’s traded a few goals for assists
