What's wrong with Matthew Tkachuk?

2022 w/ Flames 40 goals 104 points
2023 w/ Panthers 40 goals 109 points
2024 pace: 13 goals 58 points

This represents a nearly 50% drop in production and an even more alarming drop for goal scoring. However his production is only half the story, the way he plays the game has changed this year. He is much less of a pest than he is known for this year. Across the board he is on pace for less block shots, hits, take aways, basically every stat has fallen off a cliff.

The Panthers have actually had a strong season so far as well despite his play which makes this even more alarming. This isn't a good player on a team playing poorly. Almost every player on the Panther are performing to expectations if not exceeding them.

Thoughts?

It's not for a lack of trying. His expected goals is something like 8 more than his actual total. He's likely still not completely healed from offseason surgey. That Kolesar hit really f***ed him up. Our PP also sucks balls so that's not getting Chucky any extra points.

Secondary scoring as a whole is a problem for Florida right now. The top line of Rodrigues-Barkov-Reinhart is keeping us in it, but everyone else is inconsistent. Ekblad and Montour haven't done much of anything offensively since returning either.

I always presumed he would be a 70ish point winger without Gaudreau. I was clearly wrong, at least last year, as his numbers were much much higher. After watching the Panthers the other night, it seemed like it was a case of just nothing going their way. Last year, it seemed like everything went their way. The truth is probably in the middle somewhere. Tkachuk is not as bad as this year's numbers suggest, but not as good as last year's numbers.

“Just getting in and out of bed. Needed help getting onto a table here to get treatment, but everybody played a huge part in getting me to play that game. I mean, my brother was staying with me and had to get me out of bed and get me dressed to come to the rink, and I had guys tie my skates and putting on my jersey and just helping me with everything.”

The fact that the American was able to even take the ice for Game 4 after not being able to get out of bed by himself is truly astonishing, and proves that he is a warrior in every sense of the word.

Tkachuk sustained a broken sternum on a hit early in Game 3 from Keegan Kolesar — he returned to the game and scored the tying goal late in the third as Florida won its only game of the series.

“I'm happy that I was able to attempt and play that [Game 4], but I knew I wasn't myself,” Tkachuk continued, per Poupart. “There were 12 better options than me for forwards basically at that point. I knew I wasn't myself, but I tried to give everything. I can hold my head high knowing that I did everything possible to try to play.”

Guy played with multiple injuries cut him some slack.

My guess would be it has something to do with the injury he sustained in the final last season and isn't 100%
Huge clean hit !
Knights owned the Panthers from that point on

He will eventually get back rolling.. this year will be a bit of a dip in totals but he will get back to where he was... Zero concern about him.

He's an elite player whether people can admit it or not
2nd half improvement and play offs he will be front and center.

like Kaprizov he's probably dealing with an injury that has him spooked, so he's playing differently.

Didn’t he get absolutely wrecked during their playoff run?
Will see if he gets better in the second half

I'm basing this off of maybe 5 or 6 Panthers games that I've watched this year, but he's just not bringing the "force of will" element. Been quite invisible actually...
