Whats Wrong with Connor Mcdavid this Season Lowest PPG and Gpg Output in 7 8 Years for Him

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Does this season affect his legacy?

Not only is he behind Kucherov, Mack, and his own teammate in Draisaitl, but Kyle Connor is right there with him, and he's 28, so not exactly over the hill. Crosby was given a lot of shit for being beaten by the Sedins and Benn.

I mean, Kyle Connor is no joke

This is not an exact parallel by any stretch but I remember in the 2008 playoffs that the longer it went the more Evgeni Malkin struggled because perhaps he had never played that much hockey before at that high of a level. He came back the next season and absolutely dominated in the regular season and had a historic playoff run that ended with a Cup and a Conn Smythe.

McDavid has played a lot of high level hockey over the past year and more, I think he's just worn down a little bit but I would not bet against him after this summer.

I think it's fair to say he's having a season similar to Crosby's 2015 season. Considering many consider Crosby the fifth greatest player of all-time, I don't think 2015 hurt his legacy much, if at all.

Other than TOR, the teams I watch the most are EDM and WSH.

There have been times where McDavid hasn't looked like himself. He had a slow start and then got hurt. After that, he was playing great and producing at a high clip for a while. The week of the Garland incident, he was playing well until the incident. After the suspension, he really struggled (by his standard) for some time.

As of late, he does seem to be playing better. He had a strong game against DAL (a top contender) and looked really good against BUF despite only recording one point. He does have eight points in his last five games.

One frustrating thing is the number of times he sets up a teammate for a great scoring chance and the player who gets the chance doesn't score. I don't know what happened to Hyman this year, but he's a shell of what he was last year in terms of goal scoring. RNH is also having a down year offensively and the scoring depth on that team is pretty terrible (Perry is almost 40 and is fifth on EDM in goals).

Crosby finished 3 points out of first place and had the highest PPG (albeit not by very much). He started the year very strong (1.45 PPG after 21 games) then got a viral infection and a stifling coach infection that brought his PPG way down.

It was another chapter of "What else could happen to Crosby to keep him from winning more Art Rosses?"

It certainly is a meh season by McDavid by his standards for no real reason. The Oilers have seemed to regress back to their pre-playoff days of terrible offensive support outside of McDrai. It is interesting to note how well Foegele, MacLeod, and Holloway are doing on other teams this year.

There was also no one in the League on the level of current MacKinnon or Draisaitl in 2015, though. Peak Benn and Tavares were very good players but nowhere close to those guys. If those two were his main competition, I'm sure McDavid would be closer to the top in the scoring race.

He's been hurt and suspended, but other than that, I don't know what's wrong. One thing of note, though, is he has hardly any empty net points this year (I think just one) and we're now in a time in NHL history where some of the Art Ross contenders are piling up at least a dozen.

I watched all his goals from 22-23 yesterday, and 2 things stand out:

1. He did everything quicker, not just his skating but his shots are faster, his dekes are faster, every decision is faster and crisper and more automatic.
2. He carried himself differently, he had more of a chip on his shoulder. Celebrated more after scoring, etc.

If I were to speculate its probably one of or a mix of:
- Being unmotivated during the regular season, only winning means something now.
- Feeling the pressure from needing to win, letting it get to him, overthinking, trying to hard.
- Fatigued from playing so much hockey the past couple years.
- Dealing with a nagging injury.

The goalscoring is the most worrying part imo, it literally halved from the 22-23 season to the 23-24 season and he is about to score the same amount again, 64 goals in 22-23, and 32 goals in 23-24 and this season (approx). He will have back to back weakest goalscoring seasons since 17-18.

He’s legitimately not a top 5 player in the league this season first time since his rookie year

Draisaitl
MacKinnon
Kucherov
Hellebuyck
Makar / Hughes / Werenski

All are clearly better

The dig in chirps got to him

Or the wife threw the lucky McCrustys
