I think we should trade him. I was 95% sure we were trading Lekhonen and still think it was the right thing to do.

Also the guys saying we should keep him and pay him 4MIL will be calling him untradeable in about 6months if we sign him...

Jake Evans is a role player and as a role player what you have to replace is the role.
This is what astounds me most about people who are paranoid to trade him.

Jake Evans' role can be assumed by a combination of players because that is just what it is... a role.
You do not over pay over term or trade clause a role player and nobody should be fooled Jake Evans will revert to being Jake Evans.

No spots should go to young players, unless they are the Demidov's and Hutson's of the world, until they are earned through competition, repetition and against NHL teams.

You will not get an Evans level 3C off the UFA market for much cheaper than you will pay Evans.. the only other option is a trade, but not sure if that's the best use of tradeable assets either.

Nothing. You need the money to pay Demidov and Hutson. Beck or Kapanen takes the 4C spot next year. Newhook takes the 3C spot from Dvorak. Demidov on the second line replacing Newhook. You will need to pay for a top line RD at some point soon. Reinbacher and Mailloux are not going to be ready on time, if ever.

I doubt anyone is overpaying Jake Evans.. He will get paid a reasonable salary with term to be a 3C and that is more important than trying to shave off 500k-1m from a cap charge.

Going to be a lot of money thrown around July 1. Cap is going way up and Evans having good season. He could hit jackpot

Very torn about this but mainly because of his age. He'll be starting his new contract at 29. I would feel more at ease in committing longer term (5-6 years) if he was starting new contract at 27. He could def get a low first rounder.

On the other hand, I think he's become a very effective 3c and 5m/year does not seem exorbitant for a player in that role. We've seen the value of rolling 4 effective lines in the last month. First line can have bad nights and we can still win against big clubs. Thats a huge advantage.


I guess our record will determine which route will be taken come february.

Agreed on all points, although this problem has another solution: an Trocheck-type 2C who can defend and kill penalties and push Dach down the lineup.

I disagree that Newhook is the answer as the #3 centre if Evans goes to a different team. I think the 3rd centre should be:

-a veteran at the position,
-good defensively,
-can play the PK,
-chip in offensively, and;
-is decent at face-offs.

Newhook doesn’t check a lot of these points. If they move on from Evans I think they’ll have to find another centre from outside the organization which will most likely be found through a trade.

Green flags
- First time team is healthy so he's not playing in the wrong chair. Thus linemates have remained steady.
- Guy is a late bloomer so this sudden surge could be sustainable
- Good leader and great role player

Red flags
- Shooting at 24%, less than 1 shot per game. High shooting 5 on 5 shooting %
- High IPP
- career year on contract year, can be recipe for disaster. Will look to cash in
- has has trouble with concussions

Gaustad, was a physical 3rd centerman, with an effective ratio of faceoff. He was able to dropping the glove. And contribute offensively. He is the Adam Lowry of today. Winnipeg won't trade him unless maybe a first pick. There are not a bunch of 6ft 5 centerman like that. Law of supply and demand.
