Bro I know you're all in on the goaltender thing, and I don't actually disagree with you per se, but our biggest problem in the playoffs is our lack of offense. We can't afford a really good goaltender because of the expensive black holes upfront.

You find a way to have a really good goaltender, Samsonov isn't an option and Woll is talented but simply to injury prone.

it is true the offense went dry in the playoffs, and that's why, while I'm not against a core change like I have been in the past, at the same time I don't know how trading a core piece like Marner is going to help the lack of offense come playoff time time.

Unless you bring in another really good, but cheaper forward to replace Marner like a Clayton Keller.

All I know for sure is you HAVE to get a goaltender because you onlyy have one goaltender under contract and physically he is extremely weak and may be breaking down.

Unless we are able to recoup cap space from a Marner trade (far easier said than done) this is going to be a tough year until that Mumbling Boat Anchor of a captain is off this ship.

I want to believe in Woll. But if you can't rely on him then it really doesn't matter how good he is.

Which is my entire point.

Woll is good but Woll gets hurt.

You have to bring in another goaltender anyway, you have no choice you need 2 and you have 1, 1 happens to be less than 2.

So since you have to do it anyway do it the right way.

The goalie situation is iffy.

I don't like the idea of running a tandem with Broissoit or Stolarz. It's still just as risky as what they had between Sammy and Woll.

They will have to ask and see whether or not they can grab Gibson, Saros, Ullmark, or perhaps Markstrom.
I think improving the D core is a bigger priority. Due to Tavares cap hit and NMC, we probably don't have the luxury of improving the D core and also going after a big name goalie this summer. We might have to choose one over the other.

Woll should be given a chance to step up IMO and we should bring in a guy for one year. Instead of Brossoit or Stolarz, maybe Nedelkjovic from Penguins? Apparently he kind of took over the starter's job from Jarry at some point during the season. Not sure how long that lasted. Woll and Nedeljkovic could push each other and fight for playing time. Make sure Nedeljkovic is a 1 year contract and cap hit not too high. If Woll doesn't show us that he's a stud this season, Tavares money is available to go after a big goalie with a bigger cap hit next summer when Nedeljkovic walks as a UFA.

Is this like a fantasy world thing?

I’d ditch the JT contact. Use that 11 million on a 7 & 5 million 2&3 dmen, right-handed. Bring back Domi at 4. I’d probably move off Marner, spread that 11 around a 3C, forward depth in general. I’ll roll the dice on Woll, Hildebeast and Jones or some Jones clone in net, goalie is voodoo.

In real world, none of that happens, imo. JT and MM aren’t leaving, we’re rolling it back because there’s no other option.

That's a fair point.

Definitely need to fix the defense first and see what the options are out there. The goaltending might become a part of the two-year retool depending on the options that are out there.

It's unfortunate but it all depends on Marner or Tavares' NMCs.

Who was retained by Tre. As the GM of record, Cowan is 100% Tre's draft pick.
Not that it really matters, and I'd normally agree, but this is quite a unique situation unlike pretty much every pick made under a GM, since he wasn't allowed to be involved with it.
Dubas would have probably traded the pick for 10 games of broken back Foligno.
He's literally the one that acquired the pick.

I would fire Shanny, Keefe and the PP coach before Thursday
I would allow the new President the choice to replace Treliving if he wanted to
I would try to convince Marner to waive his NTC and if he didnt, I would make him a healthy scratch all season long.
I would if its impossible to move Tavares just buy him out.

after that I would try to make some short term signing and retool for a year or two. no buying at the TDL.

He wasn't allowed to sit at the table. Big deal. As if he wasn't involved in meetings with scouts and mock scenarios. No doubt he signed off on final draft strategy.

"Yes, there were some restrictions imposed by the Calgary Flames but we’re not going to go into those details," Leafs president Brendan Shanahan previously said. "I will say that I’ve talked to Brad about that. We have an excellent head scout in Wes Clark. We have an excellent scouting team. We pick in the first, fifth and sixth round. They are still doing their job. They are preparing. That part won’t change. We have the utmost confidence in our scouting staff."

"There is nothing stopping Treliving from physically being at the NHL Draft, however, he will not be allowed to take part in any of the decisions when it comes to Toronto's selections."

Sure sounds like Treliving wasn't allowed to be part of the decision, and Shanahan was relying on Wes Clark and the scouting team.

Sounds like you are extremely naïve. How exactly could the league possibly police that? Ankle bracelet? Muzzle? Cameras in every MLSE office? NHL security following Tree to the bathroom?

There really is no length you won't go to to protect your boy. Stunningly embarrassing.

I wonder if the fact that Cowen was almost certain to be available at our pick is associated with Trelivings limited involvement day of.

Chris Pronger just said it on overdrive. The problem with the Leafs is spending half your cap on 4 forwards. I think Chris is a pretty smart guy, probably smarter than all of us.
He is now talking about after next year when the have 2 11 million dollar forwards fall of the roster and names Tavares and Marner as the two they will be able to turn things around

If we got rid of Marner, I would be interested in lobbing a poisoned offer sheet at Jeremy Swayman. Nuke Boston's cap and force their hand to move off their goaltending strength before they can go and get Elias Lindholm and live to fight another 5 seasons.

He is an RFA again?

You'd think Boston doesn't let that happen...

I hope Chris Pronger isn't smarter than everyone in a semi random sample of the population. BRB going to go finish reading your post now.

EK is 7 yrs older the Mitch and still has 3 yrs at 10m per left so only a massive Dubas fan would consider this a good deal for the Leafs , lol .
I disagree. The "massive Dubas fan" still considers Marner a superstar, and probably wouldn't trade him for both Makar and MacKinnon.

The prospect pool was depleted because all their prospects made the NHL.

McMann was brought into the organization by the AHL GM. Cowan was drafted after Dubas was fired.

So we’re left with Knies and a pile meh.

Hockey posters know why he failed. You still don’t get it.
At this point I think the only plausible explanation is that he is just trolling. There's really no other way to understand his posts.

He is dead wrong. The problem is not spending half of your cap on 4F. The REAL problem is that those 4Fs CANNOT SCORE IN PLAYOFF TO SAVE THEIR LIFES. Making things worse, one of the 4Fs is almost a no-show.

That wouldnt look good at all across the league. Get benched because your overpaid because your previous GM is a f***in goof. If hes not waiving his not waiving benching him because he wont waive would just look foolish.

I do agree with your suggestion about replacing Shanny and the option to replace Treliving

He wouldn't be benched because he's overpaid or because he won't waive. He would simply be given a spot in the lineup (watching some games, 3rd line, 4th line, etc) commensurate with his 2024 playoff production. Next playoffs he gets to prove his worth again on top 2 lines but coach needs to drop him down in the 2025 playoff lineup quickly if he hasn't learned what is expected of him. ie. play like he is willing to do what it takes to win, or his ice time goes down. Who cares what it looks like when the rest of the league looks at the current/past situation as dysfunctional? Tough love!

No disrespect to Pronger, but many people have said that over the years- even on this board. It might be true.
