What would a 40 team NHL look like

It would include Mexico City and to be fair Reykjavik.

A 50 team NHL would then include Panama City and Oslo.

I expect eventually we will get to a 40 team watered-down league

What a joy it will be watching a bunch of terrible/mediocre teams with very little talent

Since Saskatoon just got approved for a new arena I don't see why not given they'll heavily support their sports teams. But I've been doing lots of travelling for work and been seeing some places wouldn't work as well as others. Like Atlanta getting another shot is ridiculous.

A team in Saskatoon would have a problem with corporate support. There just aren't any big corporations out of Saskatchewan.(in comparison to NHL cities)

We’ll get to 40, but it’s going to be a loooong time. So much of expansion will depend on individual owners or situations. SLC wouldn’t have been the top choice for relocation but they just so happened to have an arena and willing owner when the opportunity arose. So here they are.

I expect 36 to happen within a decade or so. Arizona, Atlanta and Houston will likely be in that group. I’ll pick Austin as #36 because of pop and income growth.

After that, we’re looking at 10-25 years down the road for the next 4 and it’s a crapshoot. I think they’ll want to continue to build density out west the same way they did in the south in the 90’s. So, Portland, San Diego, KC will be my guesses. One of either QC or Hamilton will be last. Canada getting 3 of the next 8 is a pipe dream. I’m not even sure they’ll get 1 unless they start getting NBA-like TV deals.

Imagine San Jose having to expose players in an expansion draft every couple of years. IMAGINE IT.
The Bay Area just lost Klay Thompson, donno if they could deal with then losing Luke Kunin or Nico Sturm. #SanJoses911
