Relying on stats to prove a point usually goes worse.

Bergeron has a reputation as a great defensive player because HE'S A GREAT DEFENSIVE PLAYER.

Who said I'm relying on stats? I've watched both players extensively for years.

I don't see what you're trying to prove anymore.

The point has not changed - Stepan is not comparable to Bergeron, except for stat surfers, although it probably also depends on what is being defined as 'comparable'.

Jeff Carter, Partice Bergeron, Joe Pavelski, and John Tavares are in the same price range.

This time next year we will be paying Derek Stepan more than the Islanders are paying John Tavares through 2018.

Which is ridiculous. Poor chess playing on Sather's part. Should've signed him longterm last contract, would've been cheaper in long run. Didn't learn from that as he did Kreids the same way. I have a feeling he'll be gone ala Cally, not AV's type of player. No speed and big contract coming.

use all capitals to prove a point about using awards to prove a point while simultaneously disproving a point about using stats to prove a point....

wait a second...what?

You're right...you are definitely confusing yourself. It's not as complicated as you're trying to make it. It may be best to back away from the keyboard for a minute. It's summer, go out and get some air, it'll do you good.

Depends how he does this year.

If he plays the entire year and puts up 60-65 points, I'd be happy with 6 years at 6, would even go up to 6.25 for 6 if that's what it took.

If he doesn't do as well and puts up around 55, or closer to 50, I'd offer 6 years at 5.5.

Just gotta wait and see.

So essentially 100k per point. There would be worse things in the world. Id really like to keep it under 6 on a long term deal. 6 years 5.75 million.

I think you need to heed your own advice. He isn't the only one who is that confused by what you are trying to say.

They still are comparable as strong two way players that are anchors on both sides of the ice for their team. It's pretty simple.

Bergeron hasn't had a season like that playing the insanely tough defensive minutes that he plays. It's not relevant.

Pavelski put up his big numbers playing next to Thornton, and his other high production seasons came when playing sheltered minutes and scoring a lot on the PP. Stepan is easily as valuable as Pavelski.

Typical.

You make excuses for why one player scored more.

But you ignore the fact that one could make just as many, if not more excuses for why Stepan's point totals were inflated.

What's typical about it? Is it wrong?

I'd love to hear this point inflation argument you seem to have. Stepan gets rougher zone starts and plays with worse linemates.

You are wrong. Even though they are both stellar two way players, both play C, and have a relatively close PPG totals at .75 and .67, they can't be comparable. They just can't be. Bergeron has the superior recognition name to Stepan. Therefore he wins. Case closed.

I'd actually compare his to David Krejci before Bergeron. That is in play type and production. Krejci is an UFA come July 1 and most likely in an arbitration case, that contract he signs would be the comparable contact. Especially if he puts up 60 points this season which is very possible. Whatever Krejci signs will be a benchmark for Stepan's agent in arbitration.

This is a fair point. Krecji is comparable.

6 years, $36 million

Well, this was good timing:

"Ryan O'Rielly agrees to 2 yr deal. $ 5.8 and $6.2."

Sather better lock up Stepan next year and get a player like ROR in 2 years because they have nothing coming up to play top 2 line center for a very long time if ever.
Jesus, look how long it took Sather to get a player like Stepan.
And anyone thinking Stepan isn't worth $6m per is out to lunch.

Brass looking for $5.5m on a long-term deal is really ****ing the Rangers right now. He's a key cog to the puzzle, but I wouldn't pay him a nickel over $4.75m on a long-term deal. He's right to seek more, he'll get it on the UFA market. Centers are at a premium right now. It's going to open a huge hole next off-season for NYR (assuming Brassard goes to arb and is awarded a one-year deal).

Miller won't fill that 2C hole in the 15-16 season.

The 2015 center UFA pool is barren.

Goaltending, defense, and size & skill down the middle win you championships. The Rangers will have 2/3 for quite some time.

I still think we see a trade this off-season after all the arb is said and done that fixes this issue.

stepan, staal, hagelin, zucc, and msl.

rangers are goingto lose a lot of talent.

They won't lose all those players with money coming off of the books and cap going up. The bridge deals with Zuuc and Krieder give Sather some flexibility as the cap goes up.
Hagelin, unless he shows more of an offensive side to compliment his speed then will probably be dealt at some point. Although I'm curious to see if they'll have a Swedish line of Hagelin Lindberg and Fast in camp.
MSL, when his contract runs out would it shock anyone if he resigns a 1/2 year deal?
Stepan, Sather would have to be high not too lock him up long term next year regardless if ROR is available in 2 years from now.
Staal, I think is the odd one out which is unfortunate because I think this team would take a huge hit if only McD and Girardi anchor the defense for the foreseeable future but then again we don't know what the prospects have yet which might impact a possible trade with Staal... and if thats the case Sather would have to trade Staal for quality. The last thing I want is Staal being dealt for some bottom 6 player and a pick or two.

I've heard different takes on Miller and it sounds as if he's better suited to play wing and not center. Anybody hear different?
Brassard has to look for the most money. He and his agent won't get $5.5m from Sather or any other GM. If thats the case and he goes to arbitration then so be it. He'll probably be awarded around $4m.
Krejci is an UFA after next season. Just saying.

Couture is averaging .74 points per game. Stepan is at .67

Couture is beginning a 5 year extension worth $30M this season

297 games played for Couture and 220 points

36 points in 56 playoff games

294 games for Stepan and 197 points

29 points in 61 playoff games

Most points since 2010 which was Stepan's first NHL season

Stepan is 53rd overall

Bergeron is Stepan's absolute ceiling. Bergeron is so, so good at what he does. Stepan is a Bergeron-esque player but not nearly as good yet, and likely won't be, but he's a player in that mold and absolutely worth 6 mil.

Especially when he comes in and puts up 75 points this year ;).

Hopefully Step's Minnesota buddy McDonagh will rub off on him and convince him to settle for something under $6m. However, I'm okay with a 6x6.

Krejci will be a UFA next off-season. There is no arbitration for UFAs

In the RFA process, the arbitrator will look for comparable contracts signed by similar players in UFA to determine fair value. This is why Kreijci comes into the discussion. O'Reilly's and Kreijci's new deals are more recent than Bergeron. They will be points of emphasis by the arbitrator and most likely Stepan's camp. The Rangers will look to diminish Stepan's request of those numbers to the arbitrator. It can be a nasty process.

Since Kreijci is being brought up, I'd love to sign him to pair with Stepan. That 1-2 punch would be fantastic and is part of the reason I think Brass and may get 1 year as well. If Kreijci walks or decides to rest UFA, I can see Sather making a big push to sign him.

I'd extend him later this summer after dealing (with) Brassard. Give him term at 5.25-5.75 over 5-6 years.

I'd extend Staal too at the Girardi deal. Staal earns 5.4 this year as his salary. Might want to lock him up before he gets used to that salary and wants more.

Cap will go up next year with the tv deal, enough to cover Staal and Step.
