Every player has a market value. When guys like ROR get paid 6 million, guys like Stepan that have put up better numbers are going to get paid 6 million or more that's just how it works. Last year he had a better year than Bergeron.

I think room to grow is the key. If Stepan can become a legit, consistent 1C then I'm fine with it.
Plus, he finally had a decent playoffs which was a huge step.
But if he continues to be a ~55 point player it's not worth it. It's a calculated risk contingent on him getting better.
Lots of players are done at 24. Lots of players aren't anywhere near peak until they're 29. You never know.
In the meantime, I think it's scary, and I hope the cap goes up.

If Ding Dong would of signed Stepan to a 6 year Mac type deal 8 moths ago this kid would be a steal at 4.9 for the next 5 years. The folks that believe Sather is doing us a favor by getting Zucc foe 3.5 right now are nuts. He is going to be a 6 million dollar guy in 12 months. Awful move!!

6M, at least.. unless we give Brassard 5M+, then probably 7, hence the reason they can't pay Brassard that.
Well we're paying Nash 7.8 so maybe Stepan will get 9 hence the reason we should get rid of Nash

Stepan and Brassard will be comparable.. Nash was given that contract a long time ago.. BRassard is a RFA (one year away from UFA), I believe Stepan could be in the same boat next year (or is it another year until he can be a UFA?), both are centers. . Stepan has more points than Brassard by a lot over the last 3 seasons (152-116).. Ryan O Reilly just got 6M per (Stepan has outproduced him as well over the last 3 seasons). If Brassard gets 5M+, you can be damn sure Stepan is getting at least 1.5-2M more because he's much better.

A 55-60 point center that has the possession numbers and goals for/against efficiency that Stepan does is worth $5.5M-$6M per.

Why don't points matter?
Bergeron is better than Stepan defensively. I'm not arguing that. But they're at least comparable players.

Bergeron is also a better skater, better at face offs, and scores more goals. Didn't he hit 30 last year?.. Stepan is trending up, and if he continues to grow, might turn into a Bergeron player, not quite there yet.

He obviously isn't quite as good as Bergeron, but they're still fairly comparable players.

Stepan's is more of a pure playmaker and Bergeron is more of a shooter, two different offensive skillsets.
Didn't say he's on Bergeron's level, but they are comparable players. There's a difference. Strong two-way centers that are the offensive and defensive anchors of their teams.
Yeah, Bergeron is better than Stepan defensively. The last three years Bergeron has finished first, second and first in Selke voting. Bergeron is the 2014 Selke winner, and Stepan did not finish in the top 20. So saying 'Stepan has a great defensive game too, although not as good as Bergeron's', is an extreme understatement to say the least.
Stepan will get paid. Good players are hard to find. Go look at the free agent list for next season. Not much there. Trades are hard to make. People complain about the money but he has the numbers to use in arbitration. Stepan is still a young player at just 24. He played with a broken jaw. Sign him up long-term.

And Ryan Callahan had more Selke votes than Derek Stepan in 2013.
NHL awards to prove a point usually doesn't go well.
The Selke is a notorious reputation award. Should've been Kopitar's this year.
Relying on stats to prove a point usually goes worse.
Bergeron has a reputation as a great defensive player because HE'S A GREAT DEFENSIVE PLAYER.
