TV: What TV series are you currently watching/recently watched?

Finished Slow Horses season 3. Really enjoy that show. It feels like they ramped up the intensity a bit.

Started Dark Matter. Only a few episodes in, but so far so good.

I watched the first episode of Fallout tonight. I'm mainly doing it because of Ella Purnell (recently saw Arcane and of course Star Trek Prodigy) but the first episode was engaging. I know nothing of the games and I'm not a gamer, but it was incredibly violent. Looking forward to diving deeper into this world.

I've been rewatching AP Bio since it went up on Netflix. Really good show, one of the last broadcast TV comedies that I made a point to watch live every week. The first two seasons hold up well, but there's a little bit of a total shift when it went directly to streaming in season 3 and 4. Strayed too far from the original premise of season 1. I thought the chemistry that Howerton had with Alderfer was really strong, and the fact that she left the show right in the middle of their courtship wrecked the arc of the series.

After hearing about "Suits" for years, I finally decided to see what the fuss was about and worked my way through all nine seasons. As a legal drama it's just okay. The amount of grudges and dirty moves and magical case law is a quick reminder you're not watching Law & Order. The lawyers are way too smarmy, the precedents way too convenient.

That said, it's a good show because the characters work well together. The series arcs around the firm's two principals, Harvey and Louis, each of whom has an interesting backstory that travels nicely through nine years of growth. Interestingly, Netflix hooked me with the premise surrounding another character, Mike, a bike messenger with zero legal training who flukes his way into a major law firm because of a photographic memory that retains 100% of legal texts. I started watching it based on his story, but stayed because of Harvey and Louis.

I binged the whole thing over 3 or 4 months, so I would've needed to write a suicide note before breaking out the shot glasses.

EDIT: The show's main actors have done surprisingly little of note since the show ended. And no, I'm not counting Meghan whatserface, who became a Duchess (although she was quite a good actress).

Definitely. I think NBC's noncommittal to renewing them or giving them anything but half season orders cost a handful of cast members because they took other projects. Two of the funniest kids from season one never came back for season two, as did Jack's British nemesis. Lynette seemed to come and go as well, she probably had other commitments they had to work around.

She might've been the most attractive woman on TV too, because that weird blue-ish color grading they used the first two years really made redheads pop off the screen.

Recently re-upped my Netflix subscription, and I'm watching 'Agent Elvis' for the first time. It's a typical adult animated series..

Elvis is basically working as a nondescript secret agent fighting stereotypical historical villains.. Charles Manson, (Soviet) Russians, etc.
First couple episodes are pretty funny. And Agent Elvis has a badass cigar-chomping chimp.

"Scavengers Reign" on Max/Netflix is awesome. Animated sci-fi where a crew gets split apart and stranded on a strange planet. The (literal) world-building is absolutely phenomenal. Easily one of the most imaginative and creative shows I've ever seen. A crude generalization would be: TV-MA Miyazaki. 12 half-hour eps. Highly, highly recommended.

Just finished Dark Matter season 1.

Really enjoyed it. Good balance between the sci-fi and the character building and bond between the main characters.

Not sure it needs another season. I felt the resolution was sufficient, and another season would be extraneous.

As an update, I finished the rewatch last night and had completely forgotten about how horrible the final season got after she left. They wasted a few whole episodes of a short 8 season order shoehorning in a new, poorly cast love interest. The Joe Manganiello episode was the absolute worst low point of the series because we're forced to pretend Jack would actually have enough invested in this girl he'd never be dating in real life to go through that shit with an obnoxious side character. And I believe that was the penultimate episode.

So yeah, season 4 gets pretty bad, like Community after Paget Brewster and Jonathan Banks joined the cast (another one of my favorite comedies of all time that got jerked around by networks and streaming services). There was even the episode with Jack's estranged dad which was the same thing Community did with Jeff meeting his estranged dad when they were running out of ideas in the gas leak season. For AP Bio, season 3 was still alright, but season 4 could be a slog. The episode where they form a cult was hilarious, and the finale was decent, but the other 6 episodes were weak to bad. And it was just sad to see how far they drifted from the original tone of the show.

I'll maintain that the first two seasons of AP Bio were some of the best TV of the past 15 years. Glenn Howerton was amazing in the role, they got a surprisingly good amount of mileage out of the kids in the class (most of whom don't have many other credits to their name), and Paula Pell really killed it. When I watched it originally I remember not liking the other three teachers because their mundane B-plots took up screen time when the main plot was so compelling, but on the rewatch I liked them more than I remembered. Though I think that's a consequence of bingewatching on streaming vs. getting one 22-minute episode a week - the breaks from the main plot are more welcome when you're watching rapid fire and don't have to wait until next Thursday to get more Howerton.

Watching 'Say Nothing' on Disney. It's about two sisters joining up with Gerry Adams and the IRA in the early 70's and their progression as members.

I believe it's just one season so far, we're really enjoying it.

Read the book years ago, which was excellent if you're interested in the history of The Troubles.
Looking forward to watching this now, too. I don't believe it's expected to be more than a single season/miniseries.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1996 animated series)

Found this on Prime.. I think it was originally a Saturday morning cartoon. Pretty true to the movie, they recycle all of the classic lines, bits, and voice inflections. It's pretty funny, and they gave Ace a monkey sidekick.

I watched No Good Deed on Netflix this weekend. Way darker and more dramatic than expected from Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano, but it was a good little mystery and still very funny.

Finally finished Ghosts UK

Nice overall final season but the ending felt rushed. I know they only did 6 eps + Christmas episode, but it would have been better if they extended the Christmas episode maybe 15 minutes and had a better conclusion. It wasn't terrible conclusion but would have been better seeing goodbye between Allison and Ghosts before the final scene in future

Overall, I loved the series from start to finish

30 episodes + 5 Christmas specials still felt like too little

Now fully onto the US version going forward

Since I finished Lost a few weeks ago I've watched the 3rd season of Wu-Tang: An American Saga and the 1st season of American Horror Story. Wu-Tang wasn't great television by any means but as a fan of the group I enjoyed it. I really liked American Horror Story and looking forward to seeing more of it.

I watched the show as well a long time ago and enjoyed it, but I didn't quite get through it all. I dropped out at some point when heigl joined the cast.

That's not a knock on her but the show didn't feel like it had the same DNA after the casting changes.

American Horror Story is a really mixed bag going forward after the first season. Most of the seasons start off pretty well and then go on a tailspin halfway though.
